Vol. 1, Thread 2.

The first thread of World News had some success with 39 views, so I’m going to keep doing this. Also, I forgot to state my source: MSNBC news

www.msnbc.msn.com

Note: I am not cutting and pasting. I took the news and summarized it into my own words.

I am adding sports later to today’s thread, since all the news I posted yesterday was pretty depressing. I will try to also get in more non-U.S. related news. However, I will never add entertainment besides announcing movies coming out and box office returns. Excluding this sentence, you will never hear about Paris Hilton or Britney Spears unless they cure cancer or go on a shooting spree or something. This is honest news, not tabloids.

Feedback is encouraged.

Floods Continue to Swamp Iowa, Midwest
Early Saturday, a levee near Des Moines, Iowa, the capital of Iowa and a city of 190,000, broke, allowing the Des Moines River to flood areas near downtown. 270 homes were ordered to be evacuated. 24,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes in Cedar Rapids, a city 100 miles east of Des Moines and home to 120,000. There has been 2 deaths and an estimated $737 million in damages in that city. The town of Keithsburg, Illinois, with a population of 700, has also been evacuated.

Governor Chet Culver has 83 of Iowa's 99 counties to be disaster areas. An estimated 20% of the state's overall grain crop has been destroyed, coming at a bad time as food prices skyrocket.

Extremist Muslim Female Suicide Bomber Attacks Iraqis Celebrating World Cup Qualifying Win Over China
What was originally a festive celebration of a futbol victory was ruined by a female terrorist blowing herself up in a large crowd of people celebrating Iraq's World Cup qualifier win over China, 2-1, in the town of Qara Tappah. Although 34 people were injured, the good news is is that there were no deaths besides the bomber. The town's administrator, Serwan Shukir, said that if wasn't for an officer who spotted the bomb and warned everyone, there probably would have been more casualties.

5 are Confirmed Dead After Earthquake Hits Northern Japan
Originally estimated to be a 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake that caused 2 deaths, the earthquake that hit Northern Japan yesterday has been re-labeled as a 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake. 5 are confirmed dead.

Space Shuttle Discovery Lands Without a Hitch
There has been some good news today. The space shuttle Discovery landed successfully at Cape Canaveral, Florida, today. NASA has stated that this is probably the smoothest mission the program has ever undergone. Only one minor flaw took place when a small metal clip slightly damaged the rudder. However, engineers said that it would not inhibit the mission.

The flight to the International Space Station, which is now 3/4ths complete, went very well. The astronauts installed Japan's Kibo Lab, now the biggest room in the space station, and dropped off a new pump to help the Russians fix their toilet.

President Robert Mugabe vows rivals will "never" rule Zimbabwe
The dictatorial President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe stated today that his opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change, will never rule Zimbabwe, along with threatening to fight. Mugabe has had 12 of the party's members, including leader Morgan Tsvangirai, arrested. The tyrant has also arrested MDC second-in-command Tendai Biti, and is threatening the death penalty against him, charging him with treason.

The MDC beat Mugabe in the presidential and parlimentary elections of March 29. However, they did not win an outright majority, which Mugabe has used to set up a second vote.

Talk about exclusion of Ireland after it voted "nay" on EU Treaty

After Ireland rejected the draft for a European Union Treaty on Thursday's refeerndum, it's time for the other countries to react. The crassest reaction comes from German Secretary of Foreign Affairs Steinmeier who proposes to think about excluding Ireland from the EU in order to remove that obstacle to the EU Treaty. Ireland's Prime Minister rather fancies just letting the people vote once more, presumably betting on a fifty-fifty chance of referendum outcomes.

Just thought I'd euro your summary up a bit. ;P

I haven't seen any posts about this Afghan jailbreak story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7454021.stm) yet, which surprises me a bit. I reckon that one will have more than a few newsworthy repercussions further down the line.

Good point, I'll add that one once I get back from my friend's grad party.

At the University of Alabama, they are talking about taking away the hot dogs!

"Crimson Tide Sports Marketing Inc., which controls concession rights for UA athletics, has signed a new deal with a Connecticut-based vendor who seeks a more upscale dining experience for sports fans than just hot dogs and popcorn."

Such an ever changing world!
