What a shame. Russert was one of the "good" guys. He was fair and pressed hard enough on issues to get a real answer, if the interviewee was going to give one.

It's going to be hard to replace him.

His survivors have my most sincere condolences.

Nothing says "Who cares" like posting incessantly.

Imagine that - a thread made for people to post in and people post in it to tell the OP they've no idea what he's talking about and that it is entirely inconsequential in any sort of way to anything! *gasp* One would think you'd've gotten how fora work by now... well, not you, once I think about it.

Mybe I should rename the post and name it "American Citizens only"

No, no, then he'd come in and say, "You know this is an international forum and there are more than just you USians here" and then add some other diatribe on the term "Americans." What you don't realize is that the forum is all about Fass. If a thread dares to not be of interest to Fass he can't just not click on it like 99% of the rest of the forum manages to do with threads that do not interest or pertain to them, no he has to make sure that you know where he stands on things he apparently doesn't care about.

So, class, lets all turn our attention to Fass because baby needs his bottle. There he is-so clever, so disaffected. What a good boy. Great. Now we can all move on (except that he won't allow that either...)

My guess is that they'd favor someone from NBC over Stephanopoulos / Gibson / etc....on the other hand, Bob Schieffer isn't doing anything these days, and people like him, and he's not a complete idiot.

In all seriousness, I don't think Jon Stewart is a good enough interviewer to anchor Meet the Press. I love The Daily Show, but in interviews he often comes across as intelligent and enthusiastic but underprepared.

Plus I want him to step into Letterman's slot -- their contracts expire at about the same time.

Ooo, I just thought of the perfect replacement! Gwen Ifill (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/aboutus/bio_ifill.html). She's super-smart, she's a patient interviewer, and she knows a lot about DC politics since she hosts Washington Week in Review.

Did anybody else read Russert's books about his dad? They were very sweet and, unlike a lot of memoirs, tried to communicate something meaningful rather than just be self-indulgent.

I can't imagine what it must have been like for the people on the set. My condolences to his family, and to the American media. One of your best is gone.

If anyone wonders why the American media is all over this guy, yet a lot of you haven't heard of him, I'll explain. He was a famous journalist. While you haven't heard of him, I'll bet that almost everyone who worked at a major American news outlet has heard of him.

Unless his family objects, I would expect to see significant media coverage of his funeral. I mean, all the top journalists are probably going to attend anyway. Might as well bring the camera crews. They won't be doing it because they can get increased viewership. They'll do it because they personally care about Tim Russert.

Bob Schieffer might be a good choice to replace him. He seems like he could follow Russert's style - figure out your subject's opinions, and take the opposite view.

Well, I didn't like his brand of toughness: he was tough if you said something in any way inconsistent with your current political position, or if your mentor said something in any way inconsistent with your current political position, of if your third grade teacher said something in any way inconsistent with your current political position, but on those rare occasions he did concern himself with the policy itself he was really inconsistent about how hard he would push to make sure the policy itself made sense. He was a big proponent of the "never flip-flop" school of politics and "he-said, she-said" journalism.

But that's beside the point at this time. I am sorry for his death, and I wish his family well.

I wasn't a huge Russert fan (although we both support the Buffalo Bills). I think his reputation for being a tough journalist was somewhat undeserved. He was confrontational, but did not ask particularly tough questions. He often played gotcha with his guests by asking inane and pointless questions ("What is your favorite Bible verse?").

He also blindly followed the administration in the American-Iraq war without challenging the information he was fed.

Fass: "Meet the Press" is the oldest television show in the world. It has been airing continuously since 1947, when television was a new invention. If you have any shows in Sweden (as I would expect that you do) where reporters interview political figures, well this is the show that invented that whole genre. If you have never heard of it, that is a bad hole in your education.
