.....so can a homosexual.”

Sure isn't that great to know.....

The North’s deputy first minister today branded Iris Robinson’s criticism of gay people harmful and distressing.

Martin McGuinness said first minister Peter Robinson’s wife should reflect on the impact her comments would have on the homosexual community.

Last week the Democratic Unionist Party leader’s spouse (whom, I point out is, head of the Assemblys health comittee)branded homosexuality an abomination and suggested it could be solved by psychiatric treatment.

That sounds like systematic erradication to me. Homosexuality is not a metal illness, it's the choice of loving whom you will, and it's silly of that woman to even suggest this course of action.

Of course, what's to be expected of someone who probably grew watching the Catholic Church ostracize girls into Magdalene laundries just because they were considered too pretty or were raped by an arse. Sheesh! We live in the 21st. century, not in the Middle Ages.

Actually they would have watched from afar and denounced the savagery of the Papists...them being up north and Free Presbyterians.....

It's also silly of you to suggest that sexual orientation is a choice.

No, thats the Catholics. These are the Free Presbyterians, who don't believe in that stuff and nonsense preached by the Church of Rome. Mr and Mrs Robinson are viewed as 'progressives' within the party, I might add.

I think Peter Robinson is probably seen as that, didn't think Iris was...this, of course, comes after what Paisley Jr. said around this time last year.

Iris Robinson is an MP, too; I wonder what would happen if any other MP said that.

What if it isn't a choice? Neither is race. We aren't supposed to discriminate against black people, are we?

What if it is a choice? So is Religion. We aren't supposed to discriminate agains jews, are we?

Whether or not it's environmental or genetic, whether it's a choice or not, whether it's 'curable' or not is irrelevant.

Sexual preference is no proper basis for the categorization of human beings.

I agree with you entirely, but the only 'choice' involved in sexual orientation is whether or not to act on it. I didn't just wake up one day bored of the monotony of heterosexuality and fancied a change. Likewise, I don't think most people are heterosexual after having reviewed the pros and cons of other persuasions and come to the conclusion that it was the best brand.

Perhaps as equally silly as suggesting that by praying and stuffing gay people with sacramental wine and the Eucharist they're going to be cured from the "Dreaded Homosexual Virus". Come on, to be a priest you have to study evem more than a doctor. It's quite Dark Ages to even discuss the topic of Homosexuality this way.

I think our wires are crossed. Of course I think any notions of curing homosexuality with prayer and wine are ridiculous. And harmful.

But I was also saying that I didn't agree with your point that sexual orientation is a choice. It's not a choice. But that wasn't silly on your part, just a bit misguided, imo.

Do not sully the name of systematic eradication by associating it with these individuals.

Shit yeah we have been doing that for years. A freind of mine was not only one of the first women ordained as a priest in this country she is also a raving dyke!

It is a choice, especially when you opt for loving a person of the same sex. Take for example, those who deny their feelings. They're gay, but be it on account of society or religion, "choose" not to "love". Aren't they making a choice?

Misguided? I don't think so. But I think we agree on what's crucial here. Prayer and wine do not "cure" homosexuality.

For the record, I don't consider homosexuality a sin.

Yes, but they're not making a choice in the way folks are talking about it; 'choosing' what sexuality you are, or who you are attracted to.

Those who deny their feelings still have those feelings, no matter how repressed.

Well, they are in 'special' seats, so perhaps exceptions are made...

However, normally an MP would be disciplined by their party, not the house. The odds of the DUP doing so to a party member over this are about the same as the Pope being welcomed into the North with a smile and a song from Willie Mc Crea on his melodeon.

Thank you. People get far too hung up on trying to "justify" homosexuality, saying it's biological, it's not a choice, etc. While I don't believe it is a choice, I also really don't care. I choose to where my hair at a certain length, drink coke instead of pepsi, and cheer for one sports team over another. None of these provide any basis for discrimination, and neither does my choice of sexual partners.
