Beer

I'm throwing quite the bash on Saturday and currently debating on what type of beer (I'd get liquor but I'd rather not get trashed right away (It starts at 2pm..)) I should get for myself to drink. Cost really isn't an issue, but seeing as I live in the middle of no where, availability is.

Beers I like:
Yuengling Black & Tan
Guinness
Lager

What I want:
A quality beer that I can drink excessively, yet enjoy the flavor until I lose my taste.

Also, when (if) you drink, what do you drink?

Supermarkets usually stock McEwan's and Belhaven, which are on the same level as Guinness, though they taste quite a bit different. You should give them a shot.

Boddington's and Newcastle are also good. Oh, and don't forget Stella Artois.

Dragon's Milk (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/new-holland-dragons-milk/14621/) is tasty but might be a little on the sweet side for you. You seem to like more assertive beers so you could try Arrogant Bastard Ale (http://www.arrogantbastard.com/).

You have only yourselves to blame! Much like with American wine, the majority of high quality beer is for the domestic market only. This inevitably leads to people bemoaning the quality of American beer as they are only used to Budweiser, Coors and the like.

Untrue...US wines [both domestic and import] regularly outrank French wines.

As for our beers, yes, many are domestic or only exported to a few countries, but some of the larger crafts (Sam Adams, Boulder, Harpoon) do a fair ammount of exporting.

Blossom Hill? Gallo? Sunset Bay? Bonterra? This is pretty much the extent of the American wine selection in most parts of the UK and to be honest I would rather drink lighter fluid than a Blossom Hill Chardonnay. Yes, there are plenty of good American wines, but they do tend to focus primarily on the domestic market. I can name maybe two decent American producers that are available over here.

Sam Adams is generally available but only the standard lager which isn't really the best example of their output. Do you know if they still do Utopias? I've been trying to track that down for ages but no luck :(

I've never seen the other two over here, although most places will stock most of the Rogue Brewery beers, which is definitely a good thing :)

I do love Boston Lager...it's a good balanced beer...not heavy, but still flavorful. They do make Utopias in limited released...they released some for 2007, and I assume they are going to make them again for 2008. My friends cousin is a chemist for them...I'll have to ask her about it.
My favorite from them is their White Ale, which is only available in spring, sadly. Delicious.

Rogue is a damn fine brewery...their Chipotle ale is nice, though lacked the chipotle kick I hoped for.

I was a bit disappointed by the Boston Lager. It was getting rave reviews, I think it won a couple of gold medals at the IBC, so I got my self a few bottles and thought it seemed a bit too light in flavour for a lager that was so hyped. That said, I'm a huge fan of the European style lagers, particularly Staropramen and the other Czech beers, so it could just be that :)

I quite like it when breweries do seasonal beers, it gives you a bit of variety and something to look forward to. You know it's summer when you walk into the offie and they've got White Wych on the shelves.

For the OP, this (http://www.innisandgunn.com/) is the best beer ever.

Anyway, to the OP

If you like Guinness, you might like Murphy's, too. It's similar.

Newcastle is always good.
I would highly recommend any of the Anchor Brewery beers. Anchor Steam is great and so is Anchor Porter.

Bass Pale Ale is good
Red Stripe Lager is a bit of a bro beer, but I like it well enough.

Always a good subject to start a thread about, beer. Some of the brands that I drink regularly are Grolsch, Hertog Jan and Oettinger, which are all pilsners. I also like to drink Korenwolf, a white beer, and Murphy's Red. Or was it Kilkenny's Red? I keep forgetting... it's what I usually order when I visit the local Irish pub.

Beer is good, but for parties I have discovered that mixed drinks carry more benefits. Last party I had my guests drained my jungle juice several times and hardly touched the keg. I'll share the recipe at the bottom, but here are the advantages of mixed drinks (jungle juice);

1) Most chicks substantially prefer mixed drinks over beer. (and it's them we want to see drunk)
2) You can control the alcohol content - so you can pour cocktails lighter at first, then heavier as the party progresses, then lighter again towards the end.
3) Mixed drinks don't usually make you feel bloated and burpy.
4) It is fun to experement with recipes.

If I were you I'd set up a keg or ice chest with beer, then a huge thermos or melon half with jungle juice;

Jungle Juice

Mango Rum
half pineapple juice/ half orange juice
a splash of passionfruit rum (float it on the top if you are mixing)
and - if you are hand mixing it - a dash of anything red (grenadine) floated on the top.

Mix the fruitjuice with the rum to preference. Usually you'll start 1part rum to 1 part juice - but later you'll go to 2 parts rum.

Be CAREFUL - this is a sneaky cocktail. People will not know how much they are drinking. It is easy to hide/forget the liquor in it.

Make sure there are designated drivers. Make arrangements for intoxicated guests to spend the night. (Remember the part about women preferring jungle juice? --muhahaha!)

IMO, Yeungling is alright, but I'd just as well have a Sam Adams. (Yeungling is pretty easy to find here in CT.)

Personally, I have lots of favorite beers from lots of different countries. IMO, no country makes the best beer, but different countries have a lock on a type. Central Europe makes the best lager (Czech/Slovak/Austria/Germany), UK & the Low Countries the best ales, Ireland has Guinness & Harp, and the US makes a lot of great brews like Shiner Bock, Ten Penny Ale, Old Dominion...

But it's all fairly moot, since the Belgians and South Africans are going to own all of it soon.

I drink a lot of Beer, sometimes one with dinner, sometimes with dinner it may be a glass or two of wine. I drink different beers for different occasions and depending on the food I am having. If it is just after a soccer game I head down to our sponsor pub and we drink for the rest of the day, I then usually drink whatever tap beer they have on special at the time this month it is Heineken ($4.5 for an Imperial pint) but then it may be a more local beer, of course the problem with doing this is that our games finish at 1pm so we are usually tanked by dinner time, not the best thing when you are going out that night as well.

Made a good-sized purchase of single bottles a few days ago, and over the next week or so I'll work my way through a St. Peter's Old Style Porter, a 22oz New Holland Existential Ale, and cork-finished 750ml bottles of Allagash White, Gouden Carolus Tripel, and Gouden Carolus Grand Cru of the Emperor. All this as part of my ongoing quest to drink every beer offered at every bar in town by the time I graduate.

Plus, there's a Three Floyds tasting at the local liquor store on Friday. It's a good week. :D

Oh, almost forgot... favorites are Chimay Grand Reserve, Leffe Blonde (sentimental pick, this was my first good beer), Tripel Karmeliet, Dogfish Head Indian Brown, and Velkopopovický Kozel Černý.

What part of CT? I didn't think they distributed there, and I've never seen it when I've gone home...

Oh...another good couple to check out. Sweaty Betty is a great beer for summer...light, crisp, and great taste.

For gluten free, Bards Tale

And for name, Unibroue. Their Trois Pistoles and La Fin Du Monde are good.

I've had it on tap at Buffalo Wild Wings in Milford and have seen it at other places (not commonly, but not OMG, I must have it NOW uncommon...) and some of the more complete package stores sell it. I believe it was at the one on the Post Road in (Milford/Orange?) in back of the Applebees and at the one right before the tunnel on 15... right off the ramp, next to the music & guitar shop. I don't know the names of those places, since I don't go there that often.

Strange...I only ask because they don't have distribution above New York, and I don't see how a place would get it as the brewery nor 3rd parties can sell it by law.

Deuchar's IPA.

A good IPA, and my preferred pint for extended drinking. I'll go for a Caley 80/- to start me off, or something else that takes my fancy, but a Deuchar's or three will inevitably follow.

My local pint. It's brewed down the road from where I grew up.

Chumblywumbly, you speak the truth.
I have found one beer in my life to rival Deuchars. It is Little Creatures pale ale. Brewed in Fremantle (West Australia) and you can buy it in bottled form from Peckhams.
Both are incredible pale ales, probably the finest exponents of their craft.

To put a Canadian twist on it:

I like Griffon, and also Keith's (Both the green and red versions). Trois Pistoles is a good 9%.

The other day I went to the city's "200-beer" pub and tried a French (From France) one, Boris. It was tasty.

Good choices.

I suggest Blue Moon. Goooood Belgian ale.

why not just take a shot of vodka, and cut it with 11 oz of water? It gives you the same alcohol content, and doesn't taste like piss. Why stop at bud, coors, and miller? Drop down a level and go with Natty and Schaeffers'. When those beers skunk, it's actually a flavor improvement.

If you have any taste at all, that piss water does not suffice.

If you're going to buy beer that shitty, it's more economical just to get a 40 oz. of steel reserve. I mean, if you care that little about the taste, then the ratio of money spent to alcoholic content is the only object.

I have no idea why anyone would drink any of the brands you named, ever.

There are some great American beers. You just have to look past the crap like Budweiser to find them. Stuff from Anchor Brewery is always good, same with Stone Brewery and Rogue. North Coast's "Old Rasputin" Imperial Russian Stout is great too.

This is why I get irritated when people buy shitty beer like Bud and Coors. It perpetuates the idea that there are no good American beers, which simply isn't true.

Okay, apparently I managed to lose a massively long post on American beers, probably because I'm drunk right now off a 22oz New Holland Existential Ale and several SoCo and Lime(s). So here's (more or less) the post I meant to send through, in bullet-point form.

- I love good European beers (especially Belgian Trappist ales) and wouldn't think to denigrate them; my advocacy for American beers is based simply on the fact that these are damn good beers.
- I absolutely understand why Europeans aren't exposed to good American beer. The good American beers enjoy only marginal popularity even with in the U.S., and having lived in Europe, I recognize that they're nearly impossible to find there outside of perhaps the 2004-beer selection at Brussels' Delirium Cafe. This is more our fault than Europe's -- craft brewers here aren't going to take the risks involved in exporting if they can't even capture a significant market share here.
- England may have invented the India Pale Ale, but the IPAs produced by any respectable American brewer would probably send most Brits to the hospital with a hop overdose. IPAs are analogous to punk rock -- Brits did it first, but we did it harder. American-produced Imperial Stouts, to a lesser degree, also tend to be better and more intense than British beers in this style. There's no competition for American beers in certain categories.
- If you get the lowest common denominator at a European bar (Tuborg, Gambrinus, Stella), you're almost certainly getting better beer than you'd get with the same approach at an American bar. However, if you're going for the best beer available, even the poorest bars here will most likely serve Fat Tire or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, at least marginally better (value judgment here -- you're welcome to disagree) than your Boddington's or Guinness or Harp or Carlsberg or Pilsner Urquell or 1664 or (God forbid) Stella.
- There are good beers from pretty much everywhere; basically, I'll never deride a beer on its origin (unless it's from France or Italy :p ).

Well, yeah, to a degree. Colorado's a bit of a special case because with New Belgium, Breckenridge, Avery, and Flying Dog they have more than their fair share of nationally renowned microbreweries. People drink Anchor beers as far east as New York (where they're wildly popular IIRC), and speaking as an Illinois resident, Sierra Nevada is my go-to beer when I can't find something I haven't tried yet.

(Incidentally, the California North Coast is ridiculously overpopulated with excellent microbreweries: Russian River, Lagunitas, Mendocino and North Coast among others.)

Most of the really good microbrews are available nearly nationwide. It's just up to the individual beer drinker to figure out which brewers he likes and where to get their beers.

I think I'm weird... I never liked the Busch/Miller/Bud/Coors lagers that were my first introduction to beer, and I still don't, but I liked the first ales and stouts I tried pretty much immediately. Beer is for children. I drink only liquor. Rum and vodka more specifically.

The opposite is true. Teenagers trying to get drunk usually don't like beer. Because they use alcohol more like a drug, i.e., the object is not taste, but simply to get drunk, for them. I've never met anyone under the age of say, 18, who actually liked beer. I don't mean drank it to get the alcohol, I mean actually liking the taste.

Beer is a versatile drink. If you try, you can certainly get drunk on it. Then again, you can drink it just because you like the taste and just have a couple and not go overboard.

If you suffer commonly from hangovers, drink a bunch of water just before going to bed. You'll have to piss like a race horse when you get up, but it does help, since a lot of the hangover stems from dehydration.

Weird. I can drink lots of beer and not get a hangover, but hard liquor I have to be more careful with if I want to wake up without feeling miserable in the morning.
I don't know what the deal is ... i can't have vodka/tequila/rum due to my ulcer. No beer and some other things (some wines, not others) due the hangovers.
No hot whiskey toddies mixed with firewater and zinfandel, let me tell you. Bad day thereafter.
Some people say it's a purity/straining issue. I dunno. After $16,000 worth of kidney stone surgery, i generally don't find myself knocking back much anymore.

Come to find out, by returning to Texas I've moved myself back out of the Three Floyds and New Holland distribution areas. :(

So, um... send me an Existential Ale, anyone? :p

Never had Three Floyds, but I'm a fan of New Holland. I also drink a lot of Bell's and Mount Pleasant Brewing's beers.

That's the Houston microbrewery, right? It's definitely on my list of beers to try sooner rather than later.

Also, the :p smiley no longer captures my original intent in using it. WTF?

I don't drink, usually. Or I should say I'm not supposed to, but give in to temptation very easily. But even when I do drink, beer is my worst enemy. I had a bad experience with a beer bong in a college dorm room. That's all you need to know.

I'm half czech ;)

My favourite beer is Modra Hvezda Special.
The biggest problem with it is that you can get it only at the Modra Hvezda restaurant in Dobrany, 15 Km south of Plzen...

Other than that i either buy Menabrea (http://www.birramenabrea.com/), Velkopopovicky Kozel Premium (http://www.kozel.cz/en/home.html), Velvet (http://www.needmorebeer.com/velvet-1.htm), Opat Svetly Lezak (http://www.pivovarbroumov.cz/sortiment.html) or, when in suicide mode, Primator Double 24% (http://www.primator.cz/cs/psp_6.html) (dark beer, 10,5% alcohol)

-How does Pilsner Urquell compare to those?
