Is there life outside the forum?

Plum Duffs

I don't know about other people, but when i'm writing in the forum i usually am not looking at anything else (eg. Youtubes funniest video). Does this show a strong commitment to the forums topics or does it just prove how desperate i am to make contact with the outside world?

Is it just me? Am i the only one who presses 'Refresh', 'General', 'Refresh' "oh i have a message!", 'type', 'Refresh'??

Do i need to get out more? Do any of you get out? And if so...is out scary?
It's not that i sit here 24/7 and wait for someone to say something worth replying to, but forums have this way of feeling like a family that you havent met, or friends you never see. Is it healthy? Don't get me wrong, i go outside, i have the odd binge drink, i see movies, i play xbox (sssh that counts).

The term 'nerd' and 'geek' is used quite often these days when refering to those who prefer to spend their 'free time' browsing the world wide web or chatting to internet lovers who just happen to be 65 year old men who like porn. But is it honestly 'nerdy' or 'geeky' to sit and wait for a reply in a forum? I don't think so. I mean, i guess its less nerdier then say, playing chess while working out a mathematical problem and drinking home made lemonade in your mothers basement.

I just cant help but feel like a bit of a bore because i have nothing better to do then write in an online forum when i could be ...well, theres not a lot to do at 11:00pm but you get my point. Does anyone else feel the same? Does anyone else sit there and stare at the screen, waiting to read something funny or interesting, hoping to be involved in whatever foul or evil conversation that is taking place in the radiowaves of Geekdom? Or are you all just doing this on your "lunch-breaks" at work while the boss isn't looking?

Maybe i'm just bored. Maybe we are all bored. Maybe i need a hobby. Maybe this topic has helped my boredom and nobody needs to even answer this now. Maybe you haven't even read this far. Mmmm maybe i'd like some popcorn.

I'd agree 60% with that.
Not that it's either an agreeable or non agreeable comment, after all it's an opinion. But i can see where you're going with it. I have also found that i'd much prefer to use this as a social outlet rather then a political debating stand. As this is a forum deticated to policits/world government/religion etc etc it's hard to get away from conversations not involving the former. I will usually put my two cents in but generally have not a lot to say on those matters. I think coming here for a laugh is proabbly the best option.

What phase is this? The 'rather have a laugh' phase? I wish i was more political minded, had more opinions on law and order but unfortunately i don't. I feel a bit left out actually. Maybe someone can bring me up to speed? And in return i could teach all about the art of a good Cheese toast.

Nah, if you were going to start a thread with that you'd probably want to make it into a fake ad, and after going through all that it's probably just easier to explain.

As long as it doesn't start affecting the rest of your life, I don't see it as a problem. For example, does it affect your functioning as a member of society? Are you doing the goals you set for yourself etc...

If it is affecting you, then yeah, it is a problem, But if you are still able to act as a functional member of society and achieve your goals whilst also participating in the forums, power to you.

In Grade 11 or 12 I realised that this forums was getting in the way of me getting where I wanted to go. I was not studying and I was going on here instead of doing things with friends. I realised that I was essentially addicted to it, and managed to get away from it. At the moment, I control when I come on here. It is my study break or my boredom place, not my primary care.

However, I suppose on the grand scale of things, sitting on NSG is not really productive, so if you have something better you can be doing, do it!

Let's see if we can both play internet psychologist: Hmm, looks like you haven't made many posts in the past 5 years since your account was created, must have a problem expressing yourself, this is a clear case of suppressing a desire to bed your mother.

I'll go and question by ability to instill other people with motivation, before finally deciding I'm not only useless at that, but everything else I have ever tried. I will then go and stop showering, start drinking heavily, and eventually move out into a cardboard box in the street. My gradual decline from there will involve drugs, pornography, a cornchip shaped like Antartica and prostitutes.

So, did it help? :)

Well, first off welcome to the Forums... secondly, you just started in June of 2008 (it is only the 8th now) and already you have 125 posts. That puts you on pace for 5703.125 emails by June of 2009. Computers are fun, but as for the internet i think it's only meant to be a distraction, a game. If you really want to find something better to do, i'm sure you'd think of it if you leave the PC alone for long enough.
Serious discussions can work, however you need to know the topic quite well before it does, teaching other folks what you know would take ages on this thing.
I admit NSG has helped me to think critically, and on how to read sheer swathes of text, in that sense it's useful.
But other than that, meh i use this thing for a joke or two, or watch an argument. I think we could start up a little business in guessing who's going to flame who in the upcoming weeks or months.

What i remind myself is, if the jokes start becoming boring on here, that's when i know i've been on for too long.
