Dreams

So, what are y'alls opinion on dreams? Do they hold any significant meaning, do they predict future events, or is it just the unconscious mind projecting it's thought? I've been pondering some dreams that I've been having lately. They all shared a common theme and I've dreamed about this theme about five nights in a row now. The last time I had several dreams in a row that has a common theme to it, later on that theme carried out in real life. So, I'm just wondering if maybe I'm having these dreams five nights in a row for a reason, or am I just projecting what I want to happen in my dreams in hope that they do happen in real life.

So, NSG, what do you think of dreams, do they predict future events, do they hold any meanings, or are they just nothing more than movies we watch while we're asleep. Also, have you ever had several dreams in a row that has a common theme?

I once wrote the single greatest poem ever. And then I woke up. And so my writing began as a quest to find that poem. I've long since given up on actually writing it, and I haven't had another dream about it. Instead, my dreams have plagued me thrice with the most wonderful girl (http://z8.invisionfree.com/SSA05/index.php?showtopic=695) I could ever hope for. The first time I met her I tried to ask her name as I was waking up, and she just smiled and cried as I woke up.

So my opinion is fuck dreams. Dreams like to taunt me. Bastards.

Dreams? What are those? Is this connected to that 'sleep' thing I heard about?

Dreams are how your brain deals with things you are concerned about and all the stimuli you took in all day unconsciously.

Well my dreams just suck then. Because if it deals with stuff that concerns me, then why doesn't also provide a....solution so that I can stop being concerned about it?

Ah, I know what you mean. I once finally got close to that woman and then, when I just wanted to kiss her, *twang* she turned into somebody else. I woke up and was pissed all day.

Usuallly, though, I don't dream much. And I certainly don't believe in any deeper meaning of dreams, though sometimes they can be fun.

Waking life programs our dreams. And sometimes our dreams can program waking life. I'm not so sure that the role of dreams is to provide a solution to our problems. Rather they seem to point out the underlying concerns which we may not be addressing in waking life. "Pay attention to this," is what the dreams are telling us.

That, or it's a completely random series of imaginary events meant to distract us.

This. They defragment your brain. :)

do they predict future events
No. If they did then, amongst other things, there'd be a shitload of superheroes and astronauts kicking around :p

While a very slim number of dreams has predicted future events, the vast majority of dreams are just plain old brain waves going crazy. Personally, I have just learnt to ignore my dreams, and I don't remember any these days, so that is good.

Hehe - it's not often I get there before someone else... my post count would be a lot higher if it weren't for the fact that 99 times out of 100 my gut reaction comments to whatever is being discussed have already been posted by someone.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry to have stolen your thunder :(

Yes to all 3. Your subconscious is more than just random meaningless chaos so it could project something significant and meaningful.

Dreaming about a future event doesn't have to be a prediction. Coincidences happen, sometimes what you dreamt about will happen without being connected to the dream. Also memories are not accurate, sometimes you will retrofit the memory of a dream to perfectly match a situation it was similar to.

Still I'm convinced dreams sometimes do predict the future. Your subconscious may put the clues together and realize something you missed or refused to admit, thus predicting something you failed to predict. Also it's possible that there could be something supernatural about dreams.

edit: just came to think of an example. One of the dreams I never forget because every detail was so vivid was about a lot of happy people cooking food for a huge feast. They where all a big happy family, all of them knew they belonged, what their role was and exactly what to do. I felt confused by all the commotion in the cramped steaming hot kitchen and really had to get out for some fresh air. Someone else already standing outside said in a friendly and pleased tone "yeah, you will stop going to church regularly.". Half a year later I felt exactly like in the dream and admitted the guy outside was correct.

Dreams are weird due to the recognizable combination of our conscious and subconscious minds. I don't think i have every had dreams come true, but I guess alot of the time I can't remember my dreams at all. I'm a believer in that the future is not set in stone, but is rather under our combined direct control. So, I suppose that if you try (consciously or subconsciously) to make your dreams come true, they can do.

There are some very scary stories out there though of encounters with the paranormal in dreams, that correspond with a real life event. Every time I have a bad dream(such as friends or family in trouble), I am really nervous until I talk to them.

If I forget to put pants on before bed, I will inevitably lose my pants at some point in my dream.

Generally, dreams help me prioritize things.

I had a dream last night that a teacher i didn't know said i got a C for the Maths exam.
Which is odd considering it's not possible for any of my exams to be marked so soon, and i'm not even taking Maths.

Dreams are, just chaotic mess of well everything, from little reminders of what you used to have to amazingly complex remakes of films or games, or some sort of fantasy. Reading into dreams could be quite difficult, considering they're not that solid in the memory, and primacy or recency effects or even trace decay can reduce your memory of them even further.

Mostly my dreams taunt me with stuff beyond my reach.

I once dreamed about a girl I had never met. We did wonderful stuff, and had a great time (in every way that would be expected, wink wink nudge nudge). Then, we were in a paradisaic clearing, and she looked into my eyes and said "Please don't wake up. I don't want to die."

Then I woke up.

see there you should have said, "Come with me if you want to live" (in Arny voice) lol.
at least that's better than having nightmares, i had one a few weeks ago, it scared the crap out of me, sometimes sleeping isn't always as great as it sounds.

have some of mine if you want i have too fucking many of the buggers.
If you really want to have more dreams, then losing sleep, doing something you wouldn't normally do in a day, being stressed out all help toward having them.
but if you really want to remember them? set your alarm an hour earlier than the time you usually wake up, fall back asleep again, then you're more likely to recall your dreams, i think it's something to do with...well being more conscious at the time of sleep.

aww, but i always wondered about my mother, then again my dad might try to castrate me, yes that's a logical thought?
To be honest i think Freud was one of the first people who didn't say all people who have mental difficulties should be locked away or shot, most of his theories are poor but at least he had some.
yeah Wilgrove has a habit of making threads sound very bloggy doesn't he?

did you ever play with poo as a child?

To be honest i think Freud was one of the first people who didn't say all people who have mental difficulties should be locked away or shot,

actually what he did was bring the field into the mainstream during a time of sexual repression we very much still had insane asylums right up until the 60's (?) and Freud certainly wasn't the first person to see mental illness as some sort of evil curse

most of his theories are poor but at least he had some.

I don't really call it a theory myself if its main basis is making money through exploiting popular obsessions

yeah Wilgrove has a habit of making threads sound very bloggy doesn't he?

I don't mind the blogs myself, in fact if I had something to talk about I'm sure I would post a thread

you must have much to say on the subject of Skat porn then

you could make a thread on Freud and clear up things about how good or bad he was.

said thread would be full of comments on how you can only hate something if you loved it first;)

I'm not sure if I would call what get 'dreams'. More like 'scary events I feel I am a part of'. That majority of my dreams consist of me killing someone or trying to avoid being killed myself. Or the falling/in an out-of-control vehicle dream which I almost always get woken up as a result of.
