For all non-Canadians, this song has been on-air for 40 years. It is the symbol of Hockey Night In Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Saturday night hockey program during the regular season.

And now it's gone.

I can say my parents (Canadians, born and bred) were VERY mad about this. I don't expect it'll sink in for me until next season (fall) when they play the new song.

YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcM-AilVxRQ&feature=related)-skip to 0:45 for it.

When I was listening to it-maybe for the last time on YouTube-I had butterflies in my stomach.

Either way, this is a waste of taxpayers' dough-not buying it-since CBC is a crown corporation.

basically hockey is being cheap they don't want to pay the composer proper royalties.

so they have a contest where they can give a 1 time check of 100,000 dollar Canadian (hey thats only worth 102,000 USD:() and take the royalties for this new song themselves.

the NHL has nothing to do with decisions by the CBC

Although the NHL can stop their broadcasting agreement. Weirder things have happened-banning octopi at Detroit Red Wings games, not allowing a team in Hamilton (moving the Nashville Predators) despite a ready stadium and audience... the list goes on and on.

I'm still really bitter about that, Copps Coliseum is less than 10 minutes from my house and right across the street from my school........

Cool. I went to a Bulldogs game there in Christmas of '06 or '05.

I heard they were selling season tickets before the deal was done. Did you hear that before the media got hold of it?

Yeah, before the sale was even final, they sold approx 5000 tickets IIRC.

All hockey-loving Canadians should immediately write the CBC and tell them to stop being cheap jerks and pay the damned fee.

As a tax paying Canadian I am very pissed off. Back in the day this was a staple for me I mean god damnit!
I for one have no problem at all having my taxes pay for that royalty as I would rather see them go to some use I can enjoy that the other mindless wastes the government enjoys.
