Mass Effect, Mountains and Molehills

So last night at 1 AM I beat Mass Effect on the XBox 360.

Before I go any further, let me just say you MUST play this game. It is far and away the most fun I've had playing a video game in as long as I can remember. Great story, great balance between action and RP, great...

...well you get the idea.

Anyway, much has been made in the media of the naughty sex scene in the game. Fox News (and sensationalism) had a bunch of talking heads sitting around discussing the full frontal nudity...

...which doesn't exist.

Frankly, if you really want to see lots of skin on a naked blue chick, go watch X-Men. Mystique shows a helluvalot more skin than any character in this game.

I reached that part of the game and my wife and I looked at each other and said "THAT was IT????"

Frankly the love scene in Mass Effect is so mild I'd have no problem letting my kids play this game (And I'm a Mormon.. go figure.)

So in short, I was wondering if I missed something? Did I blink at the wrong moment? I mean, I know Fox news magnifies everything but for god's sake there was nothing here to even build on.

Whaddya think?

PG-13 movies are allowed a very small time window of frontal nudity, but only of the variety that wouldn't offend Europeans.

They didn't even show THAT in this game.

I really couldn't care less about it, I never played it as well. Maybe I should, but I'm entertaining myself properly with Team Fortress 2 at the minute, at least untill my Xbox Live Gold card experies (since I'll probably won't buy myself a new one).
And no, you probably didn't blink, FOX is just a retarted network ;)

Not in mine, I played the male character ;)

But my wife is playing as the female. Can't wait to see what she does with it :p

I don't see what's wrong with it.

The people who are against it are in the "lalala, let's pretend sex doesn't exist" crowd.

So anyone who cares already complained a few months ago, and everyone else has continued to not take notice of what's been said as a perfectly legitimate defence of the game.

Quite so. I was just remarking on what a waste it seems like to post on a thread just to say it's old news.

Besides, if you want to be technical, the "blue skinned woman" you sleep with (actually, there are two you can do this with)...isn't a woman at all. It's an alien species comprised of only one gender

At one point in the game you can have a brief encounter with an Asarri (the blue skinned alien single sex species), then later in the game can pursue a relationship with one of two people, either another asarri on your crew, or a female crewmate, if you're a male, or a male crewmate if female. The possibility of an encounter with the Asarri individual on your ship, and the brief encounter with the Asarri elsewhere, remain open, regardless of gender.

However there is no "lesbian" or "gay" sex in the game. A male character can have an encounter with a female crew member, a female character can have an encounter with a male crew member, and either can have a brief encounter with an Asarri at Citadel, and, if they do not pursue a relationship with the male/female crewmate, can pursue one with the Asarri crewmate.

There is no homosexual encounters for the main reason that the Asarri are neither male, nor female.

The alien character does have secondary female characteristics, though.

True, but is not, technically, a female, which was my response to someone who made a joke about "gay sex". It's not gay sex at all....it's not even straight sex...

Sadly, the sex scene (the second one, not the first one that nobody ever talks about) is almost identical no matter which gender or which partner you choose. The camera shots are the same, every character moves the same, they all end up with Shepard standing next to the bed saying pretty much the same thing. I was hoping for more. It was tired of it already on my third time through the game, and in my subsequent play-throughs I avoided the romances so I wouldn't have to watch it.

And I do think it is somewhat gratuitous in that most of the nudity is of a female character; if you play a male Shepard it's Ashley or Liara, and if you play a female character it's your own Shepard or Liara. Or maybe not even Liara in the last case, it may even have been Shepard again. Why couldn't I have gotten a better look at Kaidan when playing a female character?

What's sex? :p

Yeah, all the crap people yell about teh ebil icky secks in the game is idiotic. It's little more then kissing with about 3 seconds of an alien butt showing. Heck, they show more then that in PG movies! Well, without the sexual implications, but still. It's all FOX trying to get a story during a slow news week.

Although in this case, it doesn't, the video game not being real and all.
So, really what they're asking is that people deny the existence of imaginary sex.

We have to keep a limit on the imaginary population levels. All the illegal imaginary immigrants are flooding the imaginary job market and stealing our imaginary women!

Exactly. Why would an employer want to hire someone to pretend to work when they can hire a pretend person to pretend to work for almost nothing?
