What do you do for a job?
How much do you make?
How long have you been there?
Do you enjoy your job?

For me, I work with the Univesity computer services, and started that about 2 weeks ago. My job consists of cleaning computers out over this summer, and also watching over various labs. I like the job, even though its a meager 7.95/hr. However, July 1 will see it go up $.25. Yay.

Used to teach, highschool and elementary.

Made $60,000, but part of that was a northern living allowance...salaries down south are less, and cost of living has risen enough that it's not much below living in the North.

Taught for 5 years.

Loved it, don't intend to ever get fully out of teaching...just taking a break to learn some lawyering. I'd like to combine the two disciplines to help aboriginal people get a foot up.

What do you do for a job?

Nine months of the year my job is being a medical student. This summer though i'll be spending weekdays working in a clothes shop, nights will be spent working on the PR team for a nightclub and weekends are more of an informal job packing parachutes.

How much do you make?

Medical Student = Student loans and nout else
Clothes shop = £6 an hour
PR = £6 and hour
Packer = £5 per rig

How long have you been there?

Clothes shop and PR = 2 weeks
Packer = about a year and a half

Do you enjoy your job?

Packing and being on the PR team are really good craic but the clothes shop sucks already

bartender/waiter/steward

£5.70/ hour

1 year and a half, only the last six months or so being full time.

generally yes, i get sufficient free food and drink that i don't really have to pay for much myself, i pretty much have the run of the place being good mates with the cafe manager and an irrepresably irreverant attitude with the other managers. also, myself along with two others pretty much run the place, the events department would run much less smoothly without any of us and likely as not if one of us went the other two would as well. in fact, it would be a disaster area since the management is incompetent and most of the other staff are woefully inexperienced.

Student and Facilitator. As a student I lose much money, but as a facilitator I earn £600 per 3-day-weekend. I only just started the facilitator job and hopefully I think think I'm good then I might get to do more and different work for them. I wish I get a more steady job as well though, but I just keep getting turned down :(

edit: I didn't actually say what I facilitate. I do training courses for people about to go on a gap year with a charity called VSO. Getting them ready for culture shock; excited about the people they will meet, and who they will work with; getting them to understand the issues they will be coming up against and combating; and finally giving them the tools to cope with culture shock. I'm also supposed to report back on people who I think have, despite getting through the application process, are unsuitable for the program.

I'm a freelance set crew worker for television and film. Primarily a production assistant (the bottom of the bottom rung) but occasionally a driver (not on screen, except once), grip/electric (sets up and 'cuts' lights), and sound. On rare occasions I do camera. Ultra rare. On shit no one ever sees. The only things I've worked on that anyone would have seen are some reality shows (Trading Spaces, Trading Spouses, Supernanny, Fight Quest, that stunt show that was on Discovery that I suddenly forgot the name of..., some national commercials (you can see my soon to be former van in the Avis ad where the Saab laments his owner leaving to rent a car from Avis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StOAKGji8tY&e) (the white one)), etc.)

Last year I made about $30k. But this year isn't going nearly as 'well.'

I'm in my third year, which is a touch too long for a PA.

I enjoy it a lot, but I'd rather move up from PA. I'm about 2/3rds of the way into my sound kit to do ENG (electronic news gathering, a catch all term for field recording thats not in a controlled set) sound.

I'm also a playwright, but that pays very very little so far.

EDIT: Stunt Junkies...fuck...that took too long. I did two episodes of that.

One is a restuarant and bar. Very popular in the local area.

The other is a growing insurance business. We work with the largest Medicare policy providers. Very good business to be in.

What does agile software development give you for the long term? How much does maintainability cost compared to more structured development? The way I understand 'agile', is that it's an emphasis on working, rather than on designed software. Is that right?

Not my site, but the one I write for: www.audioscribbler.co.uk - always on the lookout for new writers as well if you're interested. I've got about half a dozen pieces on there. I intend to do some proper shit hot in-depth stuff over the summer, when I have the time on my hands.

Thanks. I'll send in an application.

I'm in HS still, just started as fry cook. I hate chicken now, especially since they only let us eat the dark meat at work. I hate the burns. I get paid $7.00/hour, cause I'm still in training. I want to work somewhere else as soon as possible.

I'm a librarian. I earn next to nothing, which is more than I deserve, given that I don't have a MLS. If I were applying today rather than a couple years ago, I couldn't even be considered for the job. So I'm pretty happy to be employed at all. Good stuff. :p

Job 1: Lifeguard, $19/hour, about 6 months. Yes, it's great fun! Stand around outside, looking at girls in bikinis :) Plus I get to strip down to my dick-togs... HIGH FIVE!

Job 2: First Responder for hockey, 17/hour, about 2.5 months in this job, but have been doing volunteer stuff for about 5 years. I enjoy it, it is the most cruisey job imaginable. I went to work today for 3.5 hours, and gave out 2 bags of ice and nothing else.

Job 3: I catch stray cats and sell them to chinese restaurants, about $8 a cat... depending on the size. I've been doing it since... about the same time my housemate lost her kitten... I don't like it a real lot, but I find that it is better to sell the cats and use the money to buy food than just eat the cats.

What does agile software development give you for the long term? How much does maintainability cost compared to more structured development? The way I understand 'agile', is that it's an emphasis on working, rather than on designed software. Is that right?

A lot of things don't need to be "designed" these days, since you're unlikely to be writing the actual frameworks. Back in the 90s, you might have been writing your own persistence framework on every project - but not today.

A properly run agile project has multiple unit tests for every public interface method - something a traditional structured development project does not. These are automated tests.

I always implement automated unit tests, automated functional tests, which makes development go faster. It also makes future changes safer and faster to implement.

I emphasize sharp reduction in cycle time - from the time a bug is reported or a feature requested to the time it's in production. That is, from research, to development, to QA, to production release. My average time (after all is said and done) is 2 hours.

I don't believe for a minute that traditional waterfall or spiral is worth wasting the time. I narrow in more quickly on what users want (and that will change constantly, because business needs change constantly), my projects fix bugs quicker and more reliably (because there are automated tests in place).

We take full advantage of continuous integration - there are no integration phases in my projects. We can do this because we are flying with over 90% test coverage at all times, and have a quick release process that prevents people from stepping on each other while making sure NO ONE maintains a lock on any piece of the code.

We also use pair progamming - which really does improve productivity (there are studies that prove it).

It's not as though you don't design anything - you still do some. And you still document things - but what would you rather have in the end - a pile of documents that no one will ever read (especially not your users), or a piece of software that is bulletproof and closer to what the user wants than anything you've written before?

I've worked the miracle so many times now - and every time, after eight weeks, people are always saying, "holy shit we never knew we could write software like this".

and the users are deliriously happy...

Work as an IT Contractor, which means I do everything between actual infrastructure installation (network/telephone cabling, racks, systems, etc) all the way to Server/Workstation support for various companies in my region.

Between 48.00USD and 90.00 USD per hour, depending on the task (+ payment per mile of travel).

I've been working with this specific contractor for 1 year now...

I love it....
