do you have a mobile?

*cue babies toy joke*

I recently remembered that some people don't have portable telephones yet and so: do you have a mobile phone? when did you get your first? whats your number?

I got my first phone when I was about 12 but never used it and eventually just left it somewhere, however I was literally given a phone last year-ish and I now I wonder how I survived without it (I cannot literally fathom how terrible my life would be without text)

I got my first at age 18
I have continued to have one sense

Now with my line of work it is litterally not acceptable to not have a mobile phone

I run a windows mobile 06 smart phone right now, I also need the features of the smart phone so ... Dont think I will ever go back

That's probably not a wise idea. Especially if you were to be a very attractive girl.In that case, spare putting the number up here, and deliver it to my TG, ladies ;)

I got my first cell phone when I was at college and carried it around for about 4 years or so. When I came to Japan I quickly got myself a keitai and just upgraded to a new one (N905i in case you're wondering) last week, FINALLY getting rid of my old mova and moving to foma. Honestly though, I don't really use my keitai all that much, it's good for emails when I'm on the road and being able to call my wife when I'm going to be late, other than that though...

And no, you cannot have my overly long keitai number.

I finally got a phone a couple of years ago when it just became impractical not to have one.

I still resent my mobile though. I kick it around sometimes, just to remind it who is the boss. And then it breaks. Stupid, disobedient phone - I told it it not to break. Then I kick it around a bit more, it's the only way it's ever going to learn.

Yup, I'm on DoCoMo, even though AU or Softbank is cheaper because A. I live in Nagano and in some of the mountain areas DoCoMo is the only one that can get a signal, and B. My wife's family uses DoCoMo so it's free if I call them... Besides, when I first came to Japan, I couldn't speak Japanese well enough to get the keitai without their help so I got DoCoMo whether I liked it or not.

Yeah but it's usually only used as a watch and alarm clock, rarely for phonecalls or text messages and never for anything else, I only have it just in case. I don't understand why they put fancy features into these things. It's too small to write on, too small to contain good camera optics and too small to read, surf or watch stuff on. If it was possible to cheaply listen to my favorite web radio stations on the move than I'd understand using it for music.

DoCoMo's service is very good, it just costs you a lot.

And yes, Japanese youth (and even the elderly now) LOVE their keitai. I think I remember reading that the only nation that beats Japan in terms of keitai ownership is Finland, and that's mainly because Nokia more or less gives their phones away for free to the Fins.

Like here in Spain, MoviStar costs you a lot, and they have excellent service. Your other alternative is Telefónica de España, but their cover isn´t too glorious.

When I lived in the US, I had Cingular (ATT Wireless now) and it kinda sucked.

When I was home, I had strictly ATT Wireless (Pre-merging) and it did fairly well. I could get coverage in the vault of the server room buried in the middle of that pile of concrete call the student services building.

I 'inherited' my first one when I was about 14... I used it about twice a year. (until I destroyed it)

When I got my first job at 15 though, I went out and bought a dodgy prepaid(that I destroyed), and then upgraded at 17 to another almost but not quite as dodgy prepaid.(That I destroyed)

I got a decent phone on a contract for my 19th birthday, and started attempting to destroy it. That phone survived falling off the car and hitting the tarmac at 90km/h (Nokia N73). It however died when I dropped it at work and the screen was destroyed. (lasted me 9 months before I destroyed it!)

My current phone is a nokia 6120, and while it is the most basic nokia symbian OS phone, it is also incredibly practical. (yet to destroy it... and had it for about 4 months now!)

Up until I got the n73 I never used mobile web browsing, but now I wouldn't be able to live without it.

I have a mobile. I should have properly checked it out before I got it though. Damn thing is slower than shit passing through the bowels of a constipated goat. But any it satisfies my other demands of being small and a clam. I didn't like the accidental ringing people and wasting loads of money on my brick occurances.

I had one since I was 15 I think. I think i found unacceptable for my little sister to have one, but not me. I also think that we reason we got them was that it was a way for our dad to sneak past the firewall that was our mum on the home phone ( he lived about 200 miles away in London).

But anyway, my number is 0900 434687. You can call me any time, sexy. ;)

Years ago now, when I was in sixth form. That was something of a brick.

Yes. Got it since 1999, when I was 23. (hahaha, giving a telephone number over the internet, are you outta yer mind?)

Anyway, it has never been terribily useful, except sometimes for work and politics. I could live without it, but I would find working harder without it.
Less useful than a good internet connection anyway.

I've had one for 5 1/2 years now...well, three different ones. First was a Nokia 3310, then a Sony Ericsson K750i, now a Motorola Razr. Stopped using the first one because it doesn't have much memory for texts, the K750i broke (stupid little joystick-y thing broke, so it was a hassle to use), and the Razr has currently lasted a year. I intend to get a new one soon that I can put an Orange sim in simply to take advantage of Orange Wednesdays. And I'll be changing the contract on my current one.

Yup, my life would end without it, too. Although Facebook is slowly supplanting it as the main tool for contacting friends, and it comes with the handy "stalker" function.

Started off with some Motorola thing in about 2000, then a Nokia 3310, then a 3510, then a 7210, then a Sony Ericsson T630, then a K710, then a Nokia 6233, and currently on a Sony Ericsson K810.

8 phones in 8 years. Good old 12 month contracts with free upgrade.

My parents have had mobiles since they were carried in large leather bags, like mid-80s or something? I think?

I got a mobile when I was 15, but it seriously had 30 minutes a month. It was just for emergencies. I've had plenty of mobiles since then, but I currently have a Sidekick. In Ghana, I use a basically disposable mobile with whatever card I happen to buy from a vendor on Fodome, usually a onetouch.

For numbers, in America it begins with 1 615. In Ghana, it begins with +233 (24).

As for the number - it begins 07. :p

*begins dialing every possible number sequence starting with 07*

*(070) 000-0000*

Hello, is this I V Stalin? No? Damn!

*hangs up, repeats*

*(070) 000-0001*

Hello, is this I V Stalin? No? Damn!

*(070) 000-0002*

Hello, is this I V Stalin? No? Damn!

*endless cycle*

I will find you I V Stalin!

You're kidding me, right?

I find this indignity quite funny coming from a person with all their personal details contained in a Myspace link in their sig. :p

That's probably not a wise idea. Especially if you were to be a very attractive girl.In that case, spare putting the number up here, and deliver it to my TG, ladies ;)

Indeed. If you ever even think about putting any personal information online, have a little jaunt over to 4chan or Encyclopedia Dramatica and you'll come back to your senses immediately.

Anyway, as per the OP. I do have a cell phone. My ladyfriend basically forced me to get one, and it was just smarter since everyone in the house I live in when I'm at college has a cell phone, so it would be silly to get a landline. So it was basically the cell phone or not getting to talk to her for huge stretches of time. Still, I got it only reluctantly. I feel so much less free now. That was a few months ago, I was twenty at the time.

I think in some ways the world was better before the cell phone. But I think that about the mp3, too.

Pod?

I'm not offended. I had to run down there one day because I left my artwork lying around and it somehow got in one of the teacher's offices, and it was literally like running through a sea of perfect bodied people. It was intense. I used to dance there though. Anyway, I'll stop giving out personal information now. *runs away*

Yup, had a cell for about 10 years now.
Model? its a Samsung, dont know nor care about the type.
My number you say ? umm...555-something ;) <lie-detector goes off>

My current home doesnt have a landline installed at all, as in: i'd need to have the street broken open to have it installed, thats a tad too pricy for my taste. So my cell is the only phone i have, quite convenient since im not actually at home all that much.

Nope, and don't intend to get one with the possible exception of a prepaid one to keep in the glove compartment of my car in case I need to call AAA.

I think I remember reading that the only nation that beats Japan in terms of keitai ownership is Finland, and that's mainly because Nokia more or less gives their phones away for free to the Fins.

That is not true. Nokia phone's (or any other mobile phones) are not any cheaper in Finland than they are for example in Germany, Italy or Netherlands. The reason for that is not what you said, but instead it is much more complicated matter.

Finnish government deregulated the telecommunications sector in the early 1980s, creating a market in which no one player was dominant and stimulating a fierce price war.

Finnish mobile phone operators also chose to sell the phones themselves at a realistic price, offering mobile communications that are only marginally more expensive than fixed lines. In countries like France, operators practically give the phones away - but ultimately discourage their use by setting a punishingly high call rate.

I recently remembered that some people don't have portable telephones yet and so: do you have a mobile phone? when did you get your first? whats your number?I haven't got a phone at all. Neither a land line nor a mobile.
Let's see telemarketers bother me now; hah!
I suppose I'll have to get one after my degree when I need to find a job :(

I work for a major telecoms company and have 2 of the beasts

One is for work which the company pays for, and the other is for personal use which they pay for too:)

I have to switch the works one off every night as it has an email solution on and I always get tempted to check it unless its off

I borrowed one when I was 13 or 12 or something, can't remember since I really don't care. I can only remember I never used it, my number expired, and I didn't care about having one anymore. Now I'm 17, and since I go to college now and have to travel 3 hours each day to go to school and come home, I got myself a simple mobile phone for "just in case" situations and a text every now and then. It's nothing fancy, it does what it has to do: texting, and calling. Although sometimes I think "Damn I wish I had a camara!".

I got one when I was 16, before they were fashionable, but ditched it when I moved abroad, and only very occasionally had one since. I have one now only because I have my flat doesn't have a landline.

Everyone acts as if a cellphone is like breathing air, but quite honestly 99% of the population didn't have them 25 years ago, and we are managed to live back then. I spend £5-10 a month on it (prepaid).

LOL. Podiatry? I didn't even realise we offered podiatry as a course. I suppose it's a rather important thing though, really.
