WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A computer has been trained to "read" people's minds by looking at scans of their brains as they thought about specific words, researchers said on Thursday.

They hope their study, published in the journal Science, might lead to better understanding of how and where the brain stores information.

This might lead to better treatments for language disorders and learning disabilities, said Tom Mitchell of the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, who helped lead the study.

Ok so maybe not but an interesting study is it not?

Sounds neat, but yeah mind reading computers are a while away. Something to do with the low resolution of brain scanning techniques (also why they still carry out mental research on primates).

bandwidth and storage capacity. analog did an editorial on that not much more then a year ago. mass market journalism is always two and a half steps behind anyone who actually and honestly thinks.

i'd love to download some of the dreams i have at night to a 3d renderer, animation and game engine, but not even the most super of super computers YET have the bandwidth to do so.

this is not inhierently a perminent obstical however, just a milestone we haven't quite gotten to. it's mildly interesting that work is being done on the interface side of it; but for the time being that is all.

You assume the computer doesn't recognise a like soul and they start colluding.

LG with mind reading capabilities?

The horror, the horror.

And the majority of mind reading computers on the market fail due to insufficient input.

Uh...wouldn't something like that have to be artificially created and also probably be unstable to the point of self-destruction within an instant of its creation?

On a second not this tech gives me the creeps. Sound like something the gov in F451 would have.
