I just realized it was years since I had better melee combat gaming than simply walking up to an enemy and hammering the attack button. This made me curious, what is it that sets great melee combat games apart from the rest? Also, what is your favorite melee combat game and how does its combat system work?
My favorite is Oni. Here is a video of fighting in Oni. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=OXgjyY7wxv0) You can do fancy acrobatics to evade gunfire and melee attacks. You can do a lot of different attack moves with the 3 attack keys punch, kick and grab depending on where you are relative to the enemy, how your character is moving before the attack and what motion keys you press during the attack. After a while I pretty much always did the move I intended to do because it's easier to remember motion and position than key combos. When fighting a group I almost always damaged several opponents at once for example by throwing enemies at eachother. It's not realistic but it's great fun.
