Who is the smartest person here?

...and thus began one of the greatest flamefests of all time.

For the sake of science, please nominate the poster(s) you believe has/have the most girthful intellect(s). Justify your nomination(s).

Here are some of mine, in no particular order:

New Limacon: Exudes brilliance the way most people exude carbon dioxide.
Bottle: Consistently coherent posts. Also, is a professional neuro-something.
Barringtonia: Seems to read a lot.
The Cat-Tribes: Knows the law. Very well.

EDIT: I have added a poll. It is based off of the most commonly chosen people, with my own biases thrown in. For some of the options, I have sacrificed accuracy or good taste for the sake of rhyming. Sorry.

I smell ... a hint. I will pretend it is intended to refer to myself, who is obviously a "total hottie" (an amazing 4th place for "Sexiest NSer, Ancient Relic division (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=526087)" as of a year ago, out of a total field of ... well, ten ...) and has "great hair," again according to the comments in that thread, and say "thank you," in a display of oblivious misunderstanding of your post.

Depression is one option. I, however, am willing and able to laugh about people occasionally mentioning those who I may consider to be of sub-par intelligence, just as I am willing and able to laugh when I see the compliment-fishing, both subtle and un, that goes on in a thread like this one.

I should also nominate a certain someone whom I recall being favorably impressed with the intelligence of, who nevertheless does not choose to be flashy in displaying her intelligence. Hm. Shall I say... Ilie?

Knowledge and intelligence are two different things. Knowledge is a tool - whether one can make effective use of knowledge is the yardstick I'd apply to the definition of "smart," and that's a bit difficult to gauge online. :p

Yes, limited experience with someone can often give you a bad idea. This is especially applicable to NSG, where we discuss a comparatively small range of topics (advanced mathematics, in general, doesn't come up), and through a medium as narrow as an Internet forum.

That's why salvation is better than wisdom and love is greater than intelligence. God chooses the foolish of this world to shame the wise...

If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness" and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."1 Corinthians 3 18-20

Lies!

Yes, limited experience with someone can often give you a bad idea. This is especially applicable to NSG, where we discuss a comparatively small range of topics (advanced mathematics, in general, doesn't come up), and through a medium as narrow as an Internet forum.

But the pies are all in the thread...

What's this pie doing all over my equation of e, i, 0, and 1?

Not really cheated. In Spain, these variations of Spanish and Romance are considered national languages too, just like Catalá, Euskera, Extremeño, Leonés (which is a variation of Asturian), Canario and Galego.

I really don't think intelligence is quantifiable enough to determine whether or not someone is smarter than everyone else here... Even if we did get into discussions about high mathematics and the like, there are simply way too many ways to be "smart" that can't be expressed through an internet forum. Even in real life, it's fairly impossible for me to declare a "smartest" among a group of people I know very well.

Okay, then: no.

Seriously, I'd say that Generalites are better educated than the average person, if for no other reason we're all literate, wealthy enough to own a computer (or at least live in a town with a public library with a computer), and are technologically savvy enough to use said computer. The topics here are also, in general, about stuff educated people enjoy discussing, so even if an uneducated person did manage to get on, they wouldn't find much that would interest them.

Sound like House MD in a swedish gay version.

Well, let's look at some pictures, shall we?

As you can see, they are virtually the same person.

The notorious Fass. Who is this guy anyway?
The forum's most hate-filled atheist Swedish gay with a penchant for baguettes and cream cakes. Not sure if we have any other ones, but there we go.
I once heard that he killed a whole village with a blink of his left eye.

In the past, Fass has been perturbed when he is included on a poll, or given an award, or mentioned in any way in the OP. I don't think he would like to be included on this one, either. If you really want to vote for Fass, just choose option number seven.

Assuming, for the sake of discussion, that it's not me...

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

As such, the though processes of the smartest person on NSG should be largely incomprehensible to the rest of us.

I voted Soheran on the poll, because he's awfully smart, and I might have voted Neesika had she been an option. But, I can still carry on a conversation with them, which runs afoul of our corollary:

Any technology that is distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

So Soheran and Neesika can't be the smartest people here. It can only be one person.

But "smartest" is relative. "Sufficiently advanced", on the other hand, must be an absolute criterion.

Perhaps none of us are smart enough to be incomprehensible to you, even as some of us are smarter and one of us qualifies for "smartest."

Yet another popularity contest.

Of those on the poll:

Bottle: No, I find she has trouble seeing things outside of her paradigm. She is very smart within it, though.

LG: I would say that he is closer to wisdom than intelligence. Sometimes I wonder if it is his goodness that keeps him from really seeing the evil in others.

Katganistan: She also suffers from blind spots. I notice this most clearly when she's defending those she feels are like minded.

The Cat-Tribe and Neo Art are people who earn their livelihood debating. Consequently, when we see them here, we see them at their best. It would be useful to see them in unfamiliar situations to accurately gauge their intelligence.

Neu Leonstein: He seems to be knowledgeable in those fields he has educated himself in, and conducts himself well in those areas. He is also smart enough not to venture into areas in which he is not a master. To me this also implies a lack of curiousity, or an unwillingness to approach intellectual challenges.

New Limacon: The most interesting aspect of New Limacon's intellect is that it does not stand out at all.

Neo Brettonia: Willingly maintains a belief in a perfect (i.e. omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent) god despite the obvious logical problems this poses in terms of free will, chance, and the presence of evil.

Soheran: Perhaps the smartest person in the poll options.

Jocabia: If he was half as smart as he thought he was, he wouldn't congratulate himself even half as often as he does for his supposed debating victories.

My nomination goes to someone who did not have a long posting career, and was rarely replied to, though I never saw any mistakes in any of his or her posts: Dissonant Cognition.

But what do I know? I am obviously not the smartest person here.
