Those wacky Japanese are up to it again - raising the bar for weirdness to ever new heights.
Japan woman lived in man's closet

A woman has been arrested in Japan for sneaking into a man's house and living in his closet without him knowing.

Police found 58-year-old Tatsuko Horikawa living in a small storage space in the house in the southern city of Fukuoka.
The house belonged to a 57-year-old man, who had become suspicious after food disappeared from his fridge.
So he installed a surveillance system, which filmed the woman as she walked around in his absence.
On Wednesday afternoon police searched the house and found the woman in her cubby hole.
She had brought a mattress into the tiny space in the closet, police said.
"She told police that she had nowhere to live," the French news agency AFP quoted a local police spokesman as saying.

"She seems to have lived there for about a year, but not all the time."

Two points:
1. How the hell could you have someone live for a year in your closet without you noticing? Japanese houses ain't big and their closets are tiny. This isn't a Narnia closet we're talking about here.
2. I wonder why they haven't turned this into a game show yet?

the woman is 58, the homeowner is 57 and she has been living with him for almost a year eating everything in the fridge when he is out

I sense Alzheimer's at work :)

Possible, but she admits to having "nowhere to live". Maybe they both have it?

Oh, so that's why there's a geisha outfit in there.

I mean, one that's a different size than the one I usually wear.

Hmm, I wonder what the chances are of a Japanese woman living in MY closet. :)

My closet is bigger than most Japanese homes. Why there's enough room you can almost step completely inside it.

I hear that some people can spend their whole lives in the closet before being discovered...

also I think keeping a 58 year old woman in your closet might be bit weird:D

Wasn't this a subplot of a Wong Kar Wai film?

Sounds like the subplot for a hentai.

Thanks very much.

After reading the report out loud to my flatmates, laughing, then exchanging worried glances, we had to investigate the hall cupboard, various wooden implements in-hand.

So far: no old women.

I sense you're not telling us something far more important: any young ones?

I know of a similar story in NYC.

A luxurious Central Park West apartment building. Immigrant maid goes to work every day cleaning the penthouse apartment. She's there so often she decides to make herself a little apartment of her own, and finds a small, out of the way niche in an unused space at the top of the building's service stairs. Everyone in the building is so used to seeing her come and go, so after the penthouse owner dies and the kids sell off the penthouse, no one thinks to ask her what she's still doing there. She stays there for eight more years.

MENSTRUATION!

I'm guessing that's not the reference you were making (assuming you get the reference I'm making) but I don't care because I wanted to make that reference.

I'm curious how he didn't notice a woman in his closet. Did he just not ever use that closet?

could be. or she may have 'arrainged' things in the closet to give her some space without being seen.

This guy must live in the largest house in Japan. Not only was a woman living in a closet without him noticing, but she even had room for a mattress and room to hide that mattress

or he didn't live in the city proper. houses tend to be larger as they move away from the city center.

add to that a mattress isn't necessarily big (sometimes what we call a cushion, can be called a 'mattress' there.)
