Wolfmother! And other music-e topics!

First, how many of you have HEARD of wolfmother? They're a (Relatively) new band, and I think that they're totally awesome! They've been criticized for being a rip-off of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc,. I think that they combine the best attributes of a bunch of older bands, but aren't perfect at it. It's like hybrid-classes, like Paladins. Not perfect, but provide enough variety to make them unique. What do my fellow NSGers think?

And as a side question, do you like most modern music? I find modern musicians to be lacking in talent, and I don't like the style of them. There are a rare few (Like Maroon 5) that have talent, but I just can't STAND the style!! What do you all think?

Wolfmother is one of the best bands to debut within the past couple years.
As for modern music? Well, it seems to have peaked in the early '90s, but there are still plenty of good bands around.

I love Wolfmother, and enjoy listening to it. I think the music is great and the lyrics are just as good.

These are other songs of theirs which are great

Seen them at Leeds Fest - great live.

Very, very accurate.

Not really. I don't see them as a rip-off. Unless you think Queen was a rip-off of The Beatles in which case... Well, you're crazy, but by that definition they'd be rip-offs.

anyone heard of airbourne?

a new aussie metal band, people are calling them the new ac/dc

I disagree, I think they're too glam but they're pretty decent

and for the record, most of today's music sucks :(

Found it. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VYJak-R2iYI&feature=related) This is Wolfmother playing "Communication breakdown" by Led Zeppelin. This is the best example of the differences and similarities between the two bands.

Heard of them like 4? years ago or so. I didn't really start listening to them until about a year and half ago. They are a great rock band.

I really like their song 'White Unicorn'.

Heard of Wolfmother a few years back, but never listened to them. Just listened to them and they're ok. Though in that first link - Dimension - they sound exactly like Zep in the chorus (the lines "Purple haze's in the sky/See the angel's wicked eye/All these things we must try/Until we see the reasons why"). All in all, they're ok, but not a band I'd either go see live or buy an album or two.

Highly amused by the Google ads that come up on the second link (Woman) - Guitar Hero 4 "Play Led Zeppelin in Guitar Hero 4 Visit the Official Guitar Hero Site" and Led Zeppelin T-Shirts "Officially licensed Led Zeppelin T-Shirts – Free UK delivery".

And as for most of today's music sucking - of course. Whenever 'today' is, today's music will suck. There will always be more sucky music than good music. Just when you look back at a specific era, the stuff that remains popular is usually the stuff that's good.

I actually don't mind "modern music" (whatever that is) quite a few good bands out these days though mainstream has always sucked hard

First, how many of you have HEARD of wolfmother? They're a (Relatively) new band

musically America is quite far behind just so you know ;)

A massively uninspired band.

Why is that people with dull tastes always write something like "how many of you have HEARD of.." re: well known bands?

The thing that annoys me the most are those crappy "singers" on that Eurovision show, most of them only win because they got a cool feature or they like other countries... Modern Music licks...

Oasis and Blur were sound till they died out... Now all I hear is dodgy rap...

I loathe wolfmother.

They are a rip off of Zeppelin, I dont see how one could argue that. And I dont even like Zeppelin, but at least they were original.

And thou shalt not compare Wolfmother to Sabbath.

I've heard of Wolfmother, but I hadn't listened to them until I clicked your links. Not really what I usually listen to, but not bad I guess. Although I don't hear anything resembling Black Sabbath

Modern music doesn't suck, you just need to look in the right places.

If you're judging modern music by Eurovision, then no wonder you don't like it :p

Wolfmother was new three years ago. (And that was when my teacher was predicting they and the Arctic Monkeys were gonna be big.)

If you're looking for talent, stop listening to top 40 radio. Music is marketed to the right crowds (read: tweens) so they'll sell (because omg you need to buy it to be popular) and therefore will make it to the top 40, and more radio play. Look at what's up now.. Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, Jesse McCartney (my guilty pleasure currently is "Leavin'", but the boy was in DreamStreet- you know they're marketing to girls who barely have their driver's permits), then we have a few American Idol contestants (winners? I don't keep up with it) and a slew of music appropriate for middle school dances on the Hot 100. (Or what I can see of it. Don't have a subscription to Billboard and they cut off some charts.)

I'm not saying all of it's bad. I'd love to have John Mayer's babies. Brad Paisley's "I'm Still A Guy" cracks me up, as do a fair number of his singles. And Mariah Carey, while the new single has lyrics that are odd at parts, still can sing.

If you want original, interesting music, go off the beaten path. There aren't only bad bands on the Hot 100 and Top 200 Albums charts, but not a lot of them get awards for originality. (However- Death Cab for Cutie! The single's great and I hear the album is just as good.) Go listen to Pandora online radio. Check the related bands on Last.fm. Occasionally listen to those bands that add you on MySpace. Man, even check out those songs they license on the TV shows you like if you don't know what it is.

But let's stop calling bands like Wolfzeppelin... oh wait... original. They're good as a novelty, but not much beyond that.

Uncalled for, but needed. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpHLEm9-0bg) ;)
Really, pretty much anything goes with me except country and most kinds of rap, especially "gangsta" rap.
Wolfmother? Heard of them, they're okay. Definitly a rip-off of Led Zeppelin, but fine nonetheless.

Why? Too many similarities, and you don't want to admit the Aussies could be better then us at something? Jk :p

But seriously, like I said before, hybrid-class.
WOW! Someone else who thinks Maroon 5 is okay...
Not okay, I just think they have talent. Talent and style are two different things. And I loathe Maroon five for their style.

HYBRID CLASS!!! Seriously, they combine the best elements of many great and well known 60's and 70's rock bands.

Wolfmother is old, old, OLD news. They were HUGE here about 5 years ago. Kinda cool. Yeah, huge rip off of Zeppelin, but thats not a problem. I don't care. Good music is good music, it doesn't have to be from the original source.

Although the constant airtime they had here got annoying.
