Eastern US Summer Journey

I am writing to ask the Jolt General community for some input and possibly to gather some of them together this summer as Gasponia and I are embarking on a 4 week roadtrip in the Eastern half of the United States. In the US, I have never been east of the Dallas/FW airport or really east of Arizona, so this is a whole new thing for me; Gaspo's been all over so this is a bit less of a new experience for him. We're going to be visiting several NS people that I already know about, but if you're interested in getting together for lunch or something, or even possibly a meet in a couple of places we're in for a longer period of time, we would quite likely be able to arrange something. Also, I'll be carrying along the Jennifer Government book that the first meetup I went to quite awhile ago in San Francisco bought to send to Max, and I figure after touring the US and Britain a bit it'll be time to send it along to Max. :)

We do have an itinerary, but we are canvassing for some possible additional ideas or random cool things that people who are local or have visited before might know about. Eccentric stuff, a cool museum or historical site, or just a really pretty scenic drive/walk, those kinds of things. In addition to places/things, we'd also like to know if you personally want to sign the book or are available for a meet or whatever. :) In terms of where we're going in a larger sense, that's not really up for discussion as we have friends/family/hotels reserved for the duration and pretty much like it the way it is. But we welcome advice/commentary, just please don't expect us to take it all and use it.

So, ideas anyone?

Possible meetup locations (2+ days): Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Dallas. Other places *could* work, although it will be hard timewise.

This is probably completely outside any itinerary plans you might have, but could you consider making a jaunt into northern Michigan and the UP? Both areas are beautiful during the summer, as well as being quite temperate. I would suggest spending a day on Mackinac Island if you ever do get up there.

Anyway, get outside of Detroit proper if you can. Dispite the propaganda, it is still a shithole. Get out into the countryside. You can always find nice things to do this time of year.

Would you mind telling me what your budget is? I'm in talks with someone about taking a similar vacation.
Budget-wise, the trip comes in at around 5500 miles total, which given my vehicle estimates at approximately $1000 for fuel. We're staying with various friends and family a large chunk of the time, so lodging is only going to total about $850 for the trip. We're estimating approximately $800 each in discretionary expenses (food, admission, souvenirs, public transit in cities, etc.)

In summary, comes out to around $3200 total. That does not include Eras' airfare to South Carolina, where I live.

Oh, you guys should go to Salem and maybe Plymouth. They're neat places.

So do you two expect to get everything done? Your schedule doesn't look like it'll leave much resting time.

Personally, I feel like we'll be okay. I didn't have much rest time in Britain for my 4 weeks and I had a blast. Of course, unlike Gaspo, I'm not much of a night person, so I'll be asleep at like 9 or 10 every night. We'll see how he survives. :D

My dad always told me, "You can sleep when you're dead." We'll be just fine on getting things done, but we're not trying to do everything everywhere we go. If we want to go back somewhere, well, that'll be for the next trip or something.

And yeah, the budget is really good. We are staying with friends a lot though, and got some good deals on hotels. If we had to stay in hotels every night, we'd be looking at somewhere upwards of $1700 for lodging, to hazard a guess.

It's a gorgeous place, and I usually spend a day there once a year. At night, they have a fountain show, and on five nights out of the year they accompany that with fireworks and music (Very, Very well choregraphed). Unfortunately, I don't know if the dates for those Fireworks and Fountains shows coincide with your travel schedule.

And you're welcome. :)

Things to do in Boston:
Duck Tour (http://www.bostonducktours.com/) (please don't quack at the locals...it really is just as annoying as it sounds)
Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market (DO NOT waste your time going to Cheers. The beer sucks, the food is pretty bad, and the TV show wasn't filmed there)
get dinner in the North End. Stop by Mikes Pastry or Modern Bakery for canolis after. Make sure to roam around the area a bit...most people go for the big places to eat, but there are dozens of tiny family places that are twice as good and half the price
Sunset Grill and Tap: 112 beers on tap, 450 in bottles
Museam of Fine Arts
walk the Esplanade (park land that runs along the Charles River)
Shop on Newbury St.
Tour the Sam Adams brewery in Jamaica Plains. They give you some samples. Go to a Harpoon Brewery tasting in Southie. You don't get a tour, but you get lots of samples.
Hit Fenway Park for a Sox game.
Museum of Science
Swan boats in the common
Harvard Square can be cool

money saving tip: Get a charlie card. You can pick one up at any store 24, campus convenience, etc. but it is cheaper to ride the T if you have one.

Remember: South Boston is Southie. There is also a South End.
if you want to leave Boston for a day, Salem is a short drive away and has great witch museams as well as a pirate museam.

I'm noticing that in your Florida trip you're staying up north. Why not come down further south? Visit Cape Canaveral? I'd offer to give you a tour, but classes start right when you arrive in Florida.

Also, while you are in NYC, I'd try to see at least one Broadway play. And if you have ANY interest in science, check out the American Museum of Natural History. It is, in my opinion, the best damn science museum on the planet (excluding the Smithsonian, which is in a separate category).

We pretty much decided the drive down through Florida just wasn't going to work timewise. I have to get back to teaching and I get out of a summer program right before I leave. I'm afraid I'm kinda limiting the duration, although 4 weeks is pretty damn long.

Given I dragged Gaspo to the local science museum previously, we're already in for the sciencey ones elsewhere. I need to prove to my kids I geeked out this summer. :D

http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=nyy&m=7&y=2008

And the Yankees are at home!

Fuggedaboudit! Baseball looks the same no matter where its played, its only the color on the uniforms that changes. Don't waste the time watching something you can see anywhere. NYC's Circle Line tour on the other hand is a great idea.

Eat. NYC is food paradise.

Central Park? See above. It's trees and squirrels, just like any other park, although the here squirrels will get a little pushy if you don't hand over the nuts fast enough. They may be small and fuzzy but they're New Yawkas. They have no concept of personal space and they WILL climb on to you for nuts. You don't need to spend a lot of time in the park, walk through on your way to a museum.

Hit a few of the Ethnic neighborhoods. Hop on a Subway, you can be in Russia or Korea or India if you wish. Be brave, eat in the restaurants there. If you are from SF, skip our Chinatown, its just like yours, but if you insist, visit the real deal in Flushing, instead.

See the downtown area. Wall street, the battery, Greenwich village. Cheap thrill- take a Ferry to NJ or Staten island in the evening, look at city lights, come back. More cheap thrills- NY is big on free outdoor events in the summer. Research these online before you come, see if any are your sort of thing.

Visit a specialty museum. Personally, I think the general purpose art museums are dull- but we've got tons of museums oriented to particular interests.

Walk. NYC is for walking.

Visit the UN.

I don't know how it would fit into your schedule, but I see that you'll just about be going right through New Orleans. It would be worth the stop. It's a really interesting city unlike anything you'll see elsewhere. There are certainly bad spots, but it's easy to know where they are, and if you want, contact me and I'll fill you in. Lots of neat stuff there, and even if you just sort of meander on through on your way to somewhere else, it's definitely a neat place to see.

I'm from Indiana, anything with an elevation over about 50 feet is a mountain. Still it's something to see how they're just leveling out the state.

While you're in P'cola, you should walk through the Naval Aviation Museum at the NAS. The beaches are just fantastic, too. Sugar white, fine sand all over -- they put any Atlantic or Pacific beaches to shame.

Seville Quarter used to be a great place to drink and dance. I haven't been there for 10 years, so there's no telling what's happened to it.

Flounder's on Pensacola beach was another great place to drink and meet people.

Memphis -- You have to go find some blues bars on Beale Street.

Just because the mountains on the East coast are older than those on the West, doesn't mean they aren't mountains. They're just a lot more mature.

Did I see that you are going from the Boston leg to Northern New York state?

If this is the case, I have a suggestion...Take Rt. 2 west out of Boston, about 2 hours west, you will be in the Shelburn/Buckland area...There you can see open-air glass blowing, the Bridge of Flowers, and the Potholes (a natural swimming hole), All free, so not so hard on a budget...And, you can follow Rt. 2 right into NY state, while dropping into the Cold River whenever you want to cool off (follows 2)...

And, If you can swing it, when you are in Boston, do a "booze cruise" You get a killer tour of the harbor and outlying islands, as well as live bands, and...Booze...:D

Why in the name of all things sane are you going to Pensacola? I lived there for 2 years and it was horrid. The downtown consists of 3 5-story buildings, everyone is a gun-totin', xenophobic right-wing freak, they get a freakin' hurricane 5 times per freakin' year, (3 of which passed right over my freakin' house), and even I, the Southerner, can't interpret their accents. But other than that, the beaches are quite nice. White sand. Also, check out the Emerald Coast while you're their. The water's green, but not the bad kind of green.

Good point...But, the booze is just an extra, it's being on the water listening to live music as the sun sets and the moon rises, and planes taking off and landing at Logan buzzing overhead...;) (and the Boston skyline at night from the water is a spectacular view)

Baltimore: the Aquarium. A MUST-SEE. Inner Harbor FTW.

DC: Pick a Smithsonian Museum. I like Air and space. Also leave time for walking the Federal District and seeing the monuments.

Philly -- also see Franklin Square. It's cool, and a short walk from the bell.

NYC -- The Museum of Natural History is pretty cool too -- and an alternate meet place could be on the Circle line. ;)

Well, I have made it to DC now, after having a lovely and huge lunch with Fris and getting to see Monticello, Shenandoah Park and the Luray Caverns. So far, it's been quite cool, waking up early is annoying to me though, that's only supposed to happen during the school year.

And can I just say, the east coast is WAY too humid. Hot and humid. At least on the west coast humidity means it's going to *rain*. Here it just means ickyness. :p

Ah dammit! When you are in Boston,I'll be at home in Toronto and when you are in Toronto I'll be in Boston. Haha

Toronto
If you like vintage stores, head shops, coffee shops and culture hit Kensington Market. Drop by the Moonbean Cafe at 30 St.Andrew st in the market area. I spend way to much time there.
St Lawrence Market, fresh food and an excellent cheese shop. This place makes me happy. It's also my old hood.
If you are into hockey, go to the hockey hall of fame. It's walking distance from the St.Lawrence Market.
Shop along Queen St,yes it's expensive along here, but it's a fun time if you are from out of town. Stop by and the OCAD building to! While you are at it go to China town,it's busy and oh so awesome there.
I'm assuming you are into music, drop by Soundscapes. It's one of my favorite stores to shop for music. 572 College South

If you get stuck on stuff to do, ask a local. We don't bite.

I totally agree Kat. They talked about having weddings there, I can really see how that would be truly lovely. A bit chilly, but cool.

Agreed, although Traverse City is nice in the summer as well. Also, I'm rather fond of Ann Arbor myself.

Fuck Ann Arbor, that whore.

TC is nice, though.

In my personal experience, the only thing decent in the entire state of New York is New York City. No offense to upstate New Yorkers, but the one word I would use is "gray." Seriously, I would highly recommend avoiding it and staying a few more days in the City.

Just skip Philly. It's a friggin' hellhole. Save yourself the trouble and visit a few more places in Chicago.

Nice work on skipping Detroit too.

Your taste is shit.

You're telling me that Detroit, Philly, and upstate New York beats NYC and Chicago? What's really worth seeing there?

I'm supposed to hate K-Zoo but I can't because our Lord and Saviour, Larry Bell lives there.
