This is sort of inspired by the time travel thread.

So, anyone heard of this? I know it may be old, but I actually have been learning about it recently for many reasons, and the whole issue is sort of interesting. In that, there's a lot of supposed evidence to both support and negate the ideas he was suggesting (Go ahead, look him up. I'm sure you'll find heaps of information).
For those not in the know, this was some guy on the internet back in 2000 who posted how he was a time traveler back (or should I say, forward?) from 2036 who on some mission or another. And apparently, he felt like posting his achievement on some internet forums was the smart thing to do. Anyways...
What do you guys think? A hoax? Real? Somewhere in between?

Where's the civil war?
John Titor was sent to the past to prevent it. However, the Crab people got wind of John Titor's plan and alerted the Lord Xenu who postponed the civil war. The Civil War was Xenu's big chance to destroy his arch-enemies the Illuminati who are allied with the Men in Black and the Masonic Order. Each side is trying to achieve world domination for their own selfish reasons. The only one standing in their way is John Titor, who is actually a robot from the future sent by John Connor.

A pretty well-planned hoax with some entertainment value like any other decent sci-fi story :D
But the whole "I need to go back in time to get an old piece of crap computer" thing was silly to be honest

If it was well-planned it would have been internally consistent. Then again, spec is that it was Michael Crichton, and, well, Michael Crichton's not known for competent story-telling.

The reason John Titor is coming up again as a discussion subject is because of his prediction that Athens would be the last Olympics, in relation to the Tibet riots and the Sichuan earthquake.
These sorts of things can be seen as portends of society/political change in China, the Tangshan earthquake of '76 came before Mao's death, the dragons stir.
Conveniently forgotten are the 2006 Winter Olympics, no idea where but possibly Japan, as well as the fact that all other predictions so far haven't occurred.
However, one could say that simply by coming back he would have changed the course of history, I remember Doc saying something about disrupting time continuums and all my knowledge on the subject comes from Back to the Future.

He should have predicted the breakout of a US civil war in 2010 (as opposed to 2004) to at least preserve his shreds of credibility for a few more years.

Not quite. This so called "John Titor" covered his ass by claiming the many worlds theory of time travel to be true. Meaning that events that occurred in his time would not necessarily occur here.

Hoax. One small hoax on an internet forum. For all you know I'm a sixty-year-old child molester, and for all we know, "John Titor " is a six year old sitting on his computer and looking up random crap on Wikipedia to put in an internet forum.

It was my understanding the hoaxer lifted his backstory from an RPG.

There were bits about the titor story that was apparently convincing. Stuff about how computers work and shit. I'm not really qualified to say whether or not that is true however.
But the collapse of US society and the civil war thing. Well yah, you can take that to the bank.
