I just got back from the store, and they were having a sale on ground turkey. I got 4 pounds of lean, delicious ground turkey for $4.18. Thats a damn good deal.

Now, before TEH BLOG, there is a question buried in here. What are your shopping habits? Do you shop the sales, or always get what you need? List or memory?

Eh, I get what I need, if it's on sale then hurrah. Memory.

Shopping habits: Go to stores, buy stuff, return home.

We use lists for cleaning materials etc. but food we buy on memory as it always depends on the best offers available (and that you can't know when making out lists). Does that mean we shop the sales as opposed to always getting what we need - no. We always get what is needed, it is just that what is needed varies from week to week.

i got 6 pounds of minced beef for 6 £pounds a while back, and i still haven't got round to eating it all...

but mostly with shopping i just get what's in my memory, look out for the odd offer, but mostly i shop every couple of days and get what i need for that evening or the next day. i always spend more than i want to though :(

my habits are I shop when I have money to shop
I buy what I need, if there is a sale, good. if there is a sale but I don't need anything... too bad for the sale.

hmmm... i think there was another question there that needed an answer... but I just can't seem to remember what that question was...

My husband wrote me a program that holds all my recipes and "meal plans" (like we always eat green beans with lasagna), I click what I want to make that week and it makes a grocery list for me, if I need 1lb of chicken for fajitas and 1lb for buffalo chicken then it puts that I need 2lbs on my list. The list is generated on a spreadsheet so I can double check it and add anything I need that's not food. I can break down the list in the data base by day and figure out what order to make things in so that I don't waste any food, for example if two things use tomatoes I can make them on the same day or the day after so that I can have fresh tomatoes for both and possibly save money by buying them on sale when they are on sale. I need no brain anymore, what used to take me hours now takes me 10 minutes...

I do buy some things when they go on sale whether I need them or not, because I have freezer/pantry space and they are staple items and I use them often, like chicken breast, grapes, rice flour, etc.

I never EVER go to the store without a plan. On each pay day we put cash into the grocery envelope and when that money is gone it's gone, so I have to stay on budget or we don't eat.

Yeah, I'm still searching for good recipies for turkey. It can normally be used for a straight ground beef substitute. I know I'm going to be making a few burgers, and I can always brown the meat and use it to flavor pasta, or make a wrap or something. I've been tossing around a recipie in my head for a ground turkey and potato skillet combo with onions and the like.

depends on my state of mind when i go. if i'm hungry i'll buy nearly everything that looks tasty whether i have a list or not. if i'm stoned i'll buy shite. if i'm drunk i'll buy alcohol. i try to write lists sometimes but i can never figure out what i need and how much cuz i never know what my eating habits are going to be like from one day to the next. so i end up running out of somethings long before others and then just living on toast. i'm just off to the shop to buy some ice cream and milk and something else probably that i'll think of when i get there. guess my state of mind.

Speaking of onions, does anyone know how to preserve a half chopped onion? I have a couple Vidalias in the cupboard, but I don't need the whole thing? Do I just stick it in a baggie and put it in the fridge, or do I need to freeze it?

Keep as much intact as you intend to store, you can store it in a sandwich bag with all the air smushed out in the fridge for 2 or 3 days, just keep it in the veggie drawer. If you want to freeze it, there is a completely different procedure.

As far as your turkey, I used to take 1lb of ground turkey 1 egg and a box of Turkey flavor stovetop stuffing and mix them together and make a meatloaf. I'd top it with marinara sauce.

Just wrap it in saran wrap (or stick it in a baggie or a small tupperware container) and put it in the fridge.
It keeps - but not forever. I usually try to use it in the next few days and wouldn't keep it longer than a week, tops.

You also don't have children running around opening the fridge every 32 seconds and whining "I'm huuuuuuungry". Right?

I need one of those glass front fridges.... then the kids can stare at the food without wasting energy.

When I was in Kindergarden, I made a drawing of a refrigerator padlocked and guarded by Stormtroopers. Perhaps that would work?

We get them, but what they advertise is not normally the best buy. There seems to be some kind of twisted logic to the minds of marketing people in Latin America that makes the marketing profession in other areas almost appear reasonable.

I try, oh so hard, to buy from local markets, butchers, fishmongers and the like rather than supermarkets. They whup the multiples collective asses for quality and price. They suck for convience though, which is why despite myself, I'll usually have half a metric ton of frozen and ready made meals. Damned laziness.

I buy all of the local / organic / minimally processed food that I can, as I need it. Typically I maintain a group of staple foods that I eat almost everyday, like bananas, eggs, apples, yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal and hummus. Then, I get whatever I'm planning on making for the next few days or miscellaneous things that I'm running low on, (whole coffee beans, loose tea leaves).

You can do a lot with turkey meat. Over the past 5 years, I've cut back my red meat consumption greatly, simply because turkey is so cheap and versatile. Plus, it has MUCH less fat than ground beef and is a source of high quality protein, and freezes very nicely. Just keep in mind that it is a bit more bland, so extra seasoning compared to ground beef is generally needed. My personal favorite things to make with it include burgers, (or Salisbury Steaks, like I'm having tomorrow), burritos, and chili with black beans.

And for onion storage, you can keep it in an airtight container in the veggie bin of your fridge, and it will last a decent amount of time, (I've had it last about 6-8 days, no problem). Same with shallots.

Lists, sales, impulse.

Make paper-wrapped turkey.

use:

Soy sauce
Oyster sauce
Sesame Oil
Rice Wine
Ginger - fresh - grated
Scallions - chopped
Chinese mushrooms - chopped
Sugar

Blend it together to taste and moosh the turkey into it until well mixed. Place tbsp sized portions on six inch squares of foil - fold foil around mixture until sealed. Place in 375^ oven for fifteen minutes. Serve with steamed vegetables and rice.

I'm gluten intolerant, so shopping is often harder (and more expensive) for me. When I shop just for myself, I tend to go for the fruit and vege, and I don't care if it's on sale or not, because teh caloriez are more important than teh dollarz. ;) When the fiance and I are shopping, I probably try to calculate what's the best deal.

I can never figure out what i want to eat tonight, so usually i run into a store and just buy whatevers on sale. This leads me to eating some strange combo things every now and then.

Recipe for this is easy:
Heat up the wok, throw in some oil, toss everything i have in, eat it.
:)

Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesnt.

don't use a rifle. Us a compound bow. Rifle might startle the neighbors then you get in trouble for hunting season violations.

though an easy way to get around that is dig a circular hole about 2 or 3 inches across and 2 inches deep. put some grass over it then lay out deer corn near by. some deer comes to eat the deer corn and one will step in the hole and break his leg. It is now legal to down said deer as a mercy killing. though fill up the hole so the game warden doesn't see it.
