Thankfully, I don't have a TV.

Terry Wogan, ghastly Euro-pop and strange national voting strategies will not plague me tonight.

The absence of Dustin the Turkey from the final is inexcusable.

Due to the time difference and my desire for a booze-fueled viewing party, I actually won't be watching the contest until tomorrow night.

Not having a television, I won't be viewing it either, but it is bloody funny.

The result was expected because of the facts that Eurovision song contest is primarily a sexual minority festival, teenage girls are a big voting bloc and of course this:

Eurovision was surely up to standard this year, and so was the voting...

Poor Terry has clearly had a slap on the hand and was on a tight leash which ruined things a bit :( The guy announcing the Swedish vote did his best to make up for it though :D

Still, an awesome evening was had which was only about 99% down to the people and the booze I spent it with - the rest was pure Eurovision magic :D

I think its time the big four remove themselves from the contest in protest against block voting... no big four means no Eurovision full stop as, without the big four, no nation can afford to host the thing.

The whole block voting thing is heavily overrated. Imagine people living in the same region having similar tastes in music, and that if the songs are in languages similar to their own they prefer them. Or that countries have more expats/family connections in countries surrounding them and that might have an impact.

Wogan annoys me, he gets so pompous and up himself about it all. Especially moaning about novelty songs and people voting for them. *resists gun smiley*

Cypriots are ethnic Greeks, it's no wonder.

The block voting probably affects 70% of all votes. There are numerous examples of that.

Bah, the greek crap got 3rd place. Now I'll have to listen to it everywhere I go:(

I didn't hear most of the contest, but I have to say now that I'm glad I missed it. I think it has become clear now that the UK really is wasting its time entering the competition.

I feel sorry for Andy Abraham more than anything - I said in the thread the other day that I didn't think his song was a winner, but it was a respectable performance that deserved better than last place.

Russia received the maximum 12 points from former Soviet states Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus and Armenia, as well as Israel.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7418940.stm

Now, I'm not going to put the whole blame on block voting, although it clearly makes things that much harder. Fact is, even the Western European nations didn't give the UK any points, so we can hardly claim that it's only the blocks that are stopping us. But, whatever the reason, whether its blocks, musical taste, politics, whatever, the fact is that UK simply cannot win.

Winning isn't everything, but when you can't even get into the middle of the table with a half decent song, that was much better than some of the rubbish it finished behind, then perhaps it's time to call it a day.

This year was an even more disgraceful display of block-voting than last year. I mean, really: The British had a good song (and mind me, I am German and not prone to support the Brits), Spainm, France and Fins were funny and good.

And then? San Marino has as much voting power as France. Nations that have less citizens than my home-town and exist for less years than my nephew vote for nations that committed genocide on them only a few years ago.

Politically totally incorrect thoughts that I had:
- UK needs to split up like in football, sending England, Scotland, North-Ireland and Wales. That will make up a decent voting block, but way to small to compare to the former Soviet or Yugoslav block.
- If people vote for their former oppressors who fought a war against them and committed genocide ..... why is germany performing so bad?
- Or drive your economy into the ground so that many of your people emigrate into neighboring countries and vote for you. (This reminds me of the last "successful" german entry of Stefan Raab, who had a large fan-base in Germany and urged them to leave the country and watch from out neighbors to influence the voting. Seems like it worked).

Anyway:
The big 4 need to quit and let Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Macedonia fund the spectacle.
Or make a rule that forbids not only voting for your own country, but for all countries that had formed a nation with you in the last 30 years.

To be honest, I thought the entries last year were of a much higher quality, though perhaps not as diverse as this year...
*Whistles "Wolves of the Sea"*
Personally, speaking as a Brit, our entry received the score it deserved. Even Flying the Flag was more memorable.
I think either Serbia, Sweden or Georgia should have won...or maybe Latvia.
Also, congratulations to Spain for being the first Eurovision song I've seen to be audibly booed.

though an Americas song contest would be interesting. though the problem would be the Canadians and Americans would be out voted every time by the Spanish speakers.

I guess you missed Iceland two years ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEos9VLtgFU), then?

Russia has been so close to winning so many times lately that I'm kind of happy they finally did. I just wish they had done so with a better song, such as the one they had last year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ir7IPK_PzI&feature=related). That song was so made of win that I actually voted for it; it was the only time I've ever voted in the finals.

Not actually Europe - any country that contributes towards the European Broadcasting Union is eligible to enter. Which includes Israel, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya and Tunisia.

although by all together do you mean like back in the Soviet Union? lol

'Why not just enter England, Scotland and Wales separately?'

Because the Scottish and Welsh wouldn't vote for the English. The English would vote for the Scottish and so would the Welsh. lol

Appealing to teen-age girls? If you look at who's won 2nd and 3rd place,
it's rather appealing to 15-60 year old males:P

Bulgaria' song is actually pretty nice. Very rare for eurovision songs. The videoclip is kinda cool too.
