Oooh, in about 10 minutes the second qualifier for this year's Eurovision Song Contest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest) will begin! I missed the previous one since Sweden wasn't in it and also most of the songs (apart from Armenia's (http://youtube.com/watch?v=k1UnyY6XiXY)) really sucked more than usual, so there was no point.
Not so, tonight. Tonight more of the stronger songs are competing, and my favourites are in order:
1. Iceland. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fQm7dFO4E1Y&feature=related) I'm a sucker for super happy, gay Eurodisco sung by two gorgeous people with great voices. Not to mention Iceland deserves to win for the first time.
2. Sweden (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fHPitcikvv0). I hated our song last year. This year, I love it.
3. Ukraine. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=DHaLr6qTqPw) I'm a sucker for blingy, gorgeous pop with no substance. Plus, her breasts are captivating.
4. Switzerland. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4N3LO3czzgM) Sure, it's 100% plagiarised from Amy Diamond's "It can only get better (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ogu0sd1fHNw)", but I still love the first ballady part. Bonus points for being in Italian, which is the perfect language to sing in.
The rest, I don't care much for.
So, what are your favourites? Feel free to comment as the show goes on!
If you can't see it on TV, you can watch it online from 21.00 CET at http://www.eurovision.tv

Haha! Damn, so happy I was to hear it was eliminated. In your face, Ireland! You thought it was funny, but it really wasn't. It was just bad sportsmanship from poor losers who are living in the past.

I kinda liked Bosnia-Herzegovina's entry on Tuesday. Particular low points were the Greek, Azeri and Russian entries qualifying for Saturday. Particular high point was Ireland getting boo'ed. Richly deserved, I say, however funny it was.
I seem to recall the Latvian entry being...odd...so I'll be looking out for that tonight. Haven't really listened to any of the others, I don't think. But us Brits can vote tonight! (if we want...i.e. no). I'm predicting a finish between 21-25 for us on Saturday, probably in the lower...oh, let's say one...of that range.

You know, so did I. The lyrics were a hoot if you understood them, and I liked that they managed to get Helena Bonham Carter to go crazy on stage for them.
Oh, and Latvia... very special. The snooze-fest of tonight is however Portugal. Ugh.

Charlotte Perelli looks like a plastic bimbo.
Though not as badly as the Poland's candidate.
And who cares about voice? It's a freak show/circus so visuals are the key! Too bad Verka didn't win last year.

The video for the Swiss entry just struck me as all wrong. While the song was excellent, it didn't seem to mesh with the video, especially the random break-dancing. Admittedly, I don't know much Italian, but the tone struck me as too subdued for the fast-pace of break dancing.

Erm, k.
Didn't think it was funny myself - thought it was a piss take for a reason but the humour would have been lost on the rest of Europe. I guess Finland were exhibiting bad sportsmanship when they entered Lordi as a piss take as well eh?
The whole competition lost it's "shine" in the last few years because of the ridiculous voting blocs. Having said that, I'm slightly impressed by French entry.

I understood them, mainly because the BBC3 subtitling people obviously had someone fluent in Bosnian translating it on-the-fly for them.
Or they already had a translation of it. Whichever.

I look forward to it.

Lordy had a great song and it wasn't meant as a piss take at all - they were very serious when they entered with it, and they were favourites to win. Dustin's "song" sucked and the "humour" of it fell flat.

It was still a piss take by the standards of the serious Eurovision competitors. They were in uproar over it. I loved it.

It wasn't a song - it was an audio bowl movement.

It's a pity because Ireland used to send such good songs, no wonder they won so many times. But somewhere there at the end of the 90s they stagnated and then just got worse and worse. Sort of like Britain, but their suck streak started in the 80s.

I don't understand why more countries don't enter metal bands in Eurovision - obviously they'd need to actually apply first, but metal has a wide audience across pretty much all of Europe. Plus, it'd mean Scandinavian winners would be fairly frequent (as they produce the best metal), so we'd get blond beauties presenting the show every year. ;)

'Sucked'? Most people in Britain would love it if we could send a song these days that only 'sucked'. They're embarrassingly awful, and then people have the cheek to hide behind 'block voting' when they get no votes.
I think the song we're sending this year is alright, but not a winner.
As for the streak starting in the 80s, don't forget that we did win it in 97.

Identity crisis - Ireland didn't know should they stop with the kitsch Oirish line or try and modernise. They tried both and failed. Then we keep having to apologise for Riverdance all over the place....
Britain just.... bleugh. Camp didn't work for them too well.
I imagine Russia, a Baltic or a Balkan state will win overall.

That's annoyed me a bit in the past, because it really is what you got to hear from Britain: "They don't won't for us, because they hate us for Iraq!" No, we don't vote for you because not even you would vote for you if you got to vote for yourselves.

That's why I'm voting Finland, even though these guys' music doesn't particularly appeal to me. After another victory to metal, I bet some people will think something along the lines of "Hey, if it works for them, it may as well work for us!", and, after a couple of years... \m/ :)
