Poll coming soon.

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR RECENTLY AIRED EPISODE 4.12!

Please do not, however, spoil the NEXT episode until it has aired.

It occured to me as I watched the latest episode that, apart from Sun and Aaron, none of the people on the freighter are in any way certain of surviving. Which means it may very well blow up. Or the room where Michael, Jin and Desmond are may, anyway, killing them.

It's a safe bet that Daniel, Charlotte and Miles will survive Season 4, but none of them is on the freighter right now. In fact, I think all the freighter crew still on the freighter are unnamed. There are three "redshirt" survivors from the plane crash on board, but I can easily imagine them dying in an episode finale.

Michael, Desmond and Jin are in a rather dangerous place, and there's no guarantee of any of them surviviving.

We've been told, of course, that Jin is going to die, and part of the finale's tension is waiting for that to happen. (Just as it was with Charlie last year.) Still, it's possible that his death has been faked, that it's part of the lies the Oceanic Six have to tell. After all, they've had to lie about everyone else being dead too. (We know that everyone else is not dead, since Sayid is working for Ben in order to help them, somehow.) So Jin may well survive. The main reason why I think he probably will die is Sun's genuine private grief when she visits his memorial. Of course, she may just be missing him because he's on the island, but her behaviour strongly implies that he's dead.

Which is a shame, because he's one of my favourite characters, damn it.

If the freighter blows up, do Desmond and Michael die too? Desmond's death would cut short the whole reunion with Penny thing, but other than that, there's no reason to assume that he'll survive. (Not to mention that characters who haven't been around since Season 1 have had a rather poor survival rate...) Michael's death would be unexpected, but not impossible. They'd have brought him back just to kill him off again almost immediately, which seems unlikely, so it seems likely that he'll survive. On the other hand, there seems to be no other strong reason for him to survive. The Walt story can continue (or rather, resume) without him. I think Michael and Desmond definitely may die. It would be a surprise, and would help make it a memorable finale. Viewers are all expecting Jin to die, but what if he's not the only main character to do so?

What about the other main characters?

Claire seems to be safe for now. We may not even see her again in Season 4.

Sawyer... The only time he's been mentioned in the future, Jack just says, ambiguously, that he's "not here". Again, there seems to be no very strong reason for Sawyer to survive. His story has run its course, and, unless they intend to show him going home and embracing his daughter one day, his death in the Season 4 finale is a possibility. The potential for future Sawyer-centric episodes seems limited, and, again, his unexpected death would make the episode very memorable.

Locke. I think he's likely to survive at least until the final season now, but of course we can't be sure of anything. He's become of central importance to the island, and may feature prominently as the leader of both the crash survivors and of the Others... who knows?

On that last note, it was good to see a bit of the Others again after all this time!

The "Others" return at last (here with Kate and Sayid).

Ben heads into danger.

In an earlier episode, Kate, Bernard, Daniel, Charlotte, Juliet and Jack discuss their common predicament. Two survivors from the middle of the plane, one from the back, two people from the boat and one converted Other. The island has certainly brought lots of different people together!

(So this is a pointless thread. I don't care. I'm in the mood for pointless threads today.)

Like you say, I'm expecting Jin to die, and what with the discovery of the C4 (it was C4, yes?) on the freighter there's a good chance he'll go. Same with Desmond and Michael. With some odd logic (i.e. what Lost's good at), I can see Desmond surviving - he's had four flashback episodes, more than any other character who didn't first appear in series 1 (including Ben). Michael will survive so long as (series 4 spoiler) the freighter explodes before Locke moves the island, what with his current inability to die.

Sawyer... The only time he's been mentioned in the future, Jack just says, ambiguously, that he's "not here". Again, there seems to be no very strong reason for Sawyer to survive. Sawyer will survive, otherwise there's no Jack-Kate-Sawyer triangle.

Indeed it was. And Richard Alpert hasn't aged a bit! :p

Rocks fall, everyone dies.

Even in the ocean.

I think Jin and Michael are both pretty strong candidates for death (though I also hope against hope that Jin makes it). I don't think they'll kill off Desmond yet, because Penny is still actively searching for him, and whether or not they're to be reunited in the end (which I tend towards believing), Penny is obviously going to stay an important part of the show given future-Ben's threats against her.

I really can't believe that Sawyer will die. He's one of the core characters that I've always sort of considered essentially "unkillable," at least until the show is close to ending, along with Jack, Kate, Locke, and Hurley. Locke may be killed eventually, but pretty definitely not yet - there's been too much emphasis of his importance to the island for said importance to be limited to helping Ben move it.

I have no idea what's going to happen to Claire, seeing as we have very little idea what's already happened to Claire. :p

Meant to post this in my initial reply...but I forgot. This is an awesome theory which I sadly cannot take any credit for, except as messenger:

The Black Rock was packed with explosives. The Kahana is now packed with explosives. These situations mirror each other. The Black Rock was actually looking for the island long ago and a saboteur planted explosives. This little Spy vs. Spy "game" between Ben and Charles Widmore is being played out over centuries
