Yeah, we've probably had this topic before....

Still, I think pets are awesome and virtually everyone should have them. I myself have two cats, Anastasia (a Russian Blue) and Polgar (a Domestic Shorthair).

What about you?

i have had amazingly good luck with adopted pets.

i have a tuxedo cat from the animal shelter. when we got her she was a scraggily 9 month old that had had her first litter. we went in for a kitten but when they were all gone, we took her home. she is the best cat ever. she is a good mouser but she never tries to present me with a bloody corpse. she is playful but never hunts and attacks people. she is affectionate and amusing.

my sister and i are sharing custody of a maltese/poodle cross that her daughter picked up in albuquerque. its owner couldnt take care of him and he got so matted that he had to be completely shaved. he is the best dog EVER. he doesnt bark, doesnt get into the trash and doesnt chew on the furniture. he is happy, smart, and eager to please. he is a wonderful pet that we could never have expected to find the equivalent of by shopping for him.

I have a black and white Rat Terrier named Jynx. She's the sweetest dog ever, and smart to boot. She's got a little personality to her and its so funny. I half expect her to talk back to us sometimes.

I had a dog, but it attacked some sheep and had to be put down. I still insist it was self defence, sheep are vicious bastards. If we didn't eat them they'd eat us.

I have a collie/whippet cross and he is a little star. He is very quiet indoors but loves to run when you take him out. He is an excellent watchdog and has saved at least one car and some roof bars. He's very intelligent and loves to solve puzzles and do tricks and is very friendly with people and other dogs. I swear he could talk if he thought he needed to, but he communicates so well without. He's a great comfort when I'm stressed or angry or upset and as much as i hate the extra cleaning, he's worth it :)

Did have 2 dogs and 2 cats. One of my uncles died recently leaving 5 cats. We were only able to find a good home for one cat. So now we have 6 cats and 2 dogs. Love them all but it's a big job keeping the litter changed !

I have the best dog in the world. I will never be able to comprehend why some jackass dumped her in the woods near my house when she was a baby, seeing as she is genuinely the sweetest, funniest, smartest dog I've ever encountered, but I'm glad she found her way to me. :)

Six cats and two dogs.

The cats are two orange tabbies, one mackerel tabby, a pure white, an ocicat and a calico. The dogs are a Golden Retriever and a Llewellin Setter. Both dogs are purebreds and therefore purchased, but we've adopted one of the cats and the rest have just shown up. In January, we had eight cats, but we lost one (Siamese) in February from complications from diabetes and the other (tuxedo) two weeks ago to lung and colon cancer.

At our most, we had about thirty cats because we maintained an active feral colony.

I have two dogs, Chloe (a spaniel/lab mix), and Mr. Muggles (Pomeranian/chihuahua), and two cats, Emma (a mix, white/grayish-green-brown fur), and Max (black stray we kept, broken tale, so it's curly, and a scar on his face from a puncture wound he had when we first found him, poor little guy).

We also have this weird thing where stray animals seem to gravitate to our house. In the past, we've taken care of two baby birds fallen out of their nest, had found a litter of kittens in our composter (the mama later moved them away from human contact), two stray dogs (that I can remember) that we took to the shelter, and a newborn kitten dying from water on the brain, we took him to the vet and humanely euthanised him, poor baby, cried all through the night for the day and a half that we had him, he was in so much pain, it was the kindest thing we could do for him. :(

I really love animals, and I would love to have a farm someday.

the pole left out, what, at least where i live, in the u.s., is the most common reason those of us who would like to shelter nonhuman comensals, are prevented from doing so.

it is faced by nearly everyone who rents, and by far the vast majority of people in the developed world, are forced to rent, unless the have unusually good fortune, or indenture themselves for something like thirty years.

as a policy it began i think sometime in the late 70s as part of the right wing knee jerk against the so called left, perhapse even earlier, but it was during the 80s that it creapingly became more and more all pervasive, this forbidding by landlords, of the care and nurturing of nonhuman comensals.

comensals is the word i use, as leguine's example started me doing, because of the indignities implied in the concept of the word pet.

you don't KNOW any creature is less self awaire in any way, shape or manor, then yourself: only that the are less creative of artifacts and less interested in surrounding themselves with them.

Two cats, Nelson and Thabo.

We adopted a nameless neighbour's cat whom we found out to have been locked up in a cage for ten years. (Sickening thought ...) Been in jail the best part of his life and off-black, hence the name.
A kitten walked in one day and decided to stay, black as well and obviously destined to become Nelson's successor.

I believe that pets are awesome, but I also believe that quite a number of human beings are everything but, and should therefore refrain from having pets for the pets' sake.

Landlords not allowing pets has nothing to do with politics, and a lot to do with the possibility that the animal will damage the apartment/yard in some way, costing the landlord money to repair the damage. My apartment complex deals with this another way. They charge a $200 non refundable fee to residents that have/want to have pets in the apartment (this is why I have no pets). This is to help cover any damage, and is separate from the security deposit.

Somehow, the thought of keeping an animal of any kind in a state of near-slavery for my own personal amusement doesn't interest me in the least.
