Jock itch ... [serious thread]

The Macabees

I got jock itch about seven months ago when I was still at Ft. Benning, Georgia, as an infantryman. Seven months later, in Spain, I still have it. I just bought a fungicide after previous products failed to get rid of it - does anybody have any products they've tried and it helped?

Yeah, it's called 'Stop Visiting The Local Whore House'

However, it's preventative rather than a cure.

What were you using before and why did you wait seven months to go for the obvious anti-fungal

Oh good, while we are talking about medical problems:

I have this severe burning sensation in my chest radiating down my left arm and I find it hard to breathe. What do you think I should take? panadol and sleep it off?

----

Okay, now I have my thinly veiled sarcasm out of my system, I can tell you to go to a doctor. I don't think there are any doctors that regular the NS forums. Even if there were, I'm fairly sure they'd need more information to diagnose it. You have already tried an over-the-counter fungicide, so my gut would suggest you need a prescription med. No one on NS can write you a prescription. especially without seeing you in person.

What were you using before and why did you wait seven months to go for the obvious anti-fungal

At first I didn't even know what jock itch really was and I thought it was just a rash from my thighs rubbing together. I was using a cream sold here in Spain that's supposed to help against rashes, but it was helping to stop the itch so I thought it was working [skin color was changing too a lighter red, as well], until about two days ago it started to augment the itch and the jock itch started to burn. So, I decided to research on jock itch and decided to buy an anti-fungal cream today. It really burns too, but it's more temporary and didn't result in such an itch that I couldn't even sleep.

This would be logical, especially in a country where I should technically have free healthcare. But, I don't and I don't have the money to pay for healthcare, so I have to wait until the Ministry of Justice issues me an ID card before I can really even hope for healthcare. The good thing is that in Spain pharmacies tend to sell you prescription drugs over-the-counter.

I ignore any posts that don't include the phrase "Built like a brick shithouse"...

My apologies Fass and anyone else who took offense. Allow me to rephrase:

There is one doctor that regulars the NS forums. I'm fairly sure they'd need more information to diagnose it. You have already tried an over-the-counter fungicide, so my gut would suggest you need a prescription med. Only one person on NS can write you a prescription. I highly doubt he would if he wishes to remain a doctor without seeing you in person.

At Ft. Benning, during the time I got it, I was with about fifty other guys and I'm not gay [although, I do sleep walk :p ]. I got it during a road march, that's for sure - one of those week-long field manuevers, where you don't really have a chance to shower.

There is one doctor that regulars the NS forums. I'm fairly sure they'd need more information to diagnose it.

I'm not looking for a diagnoses, I am looking for people who have experienced the same problem and know of medicines that have helped them - as it says in the opening post.

Most ringworm infections of the skin, such as jock itch, can be treated at home with antifungal creams and powders you can buy without a prescription. But have your doctor look at any infection that does not go away, is severe, or comes back. To treat jock itch, follow these steps:

* Wash the rash with soap and water. Gently remove any pieces of dried skin, and spread an antifungal cream over the rash. Apply the cream beyond the edge of the rash.
* Use an antifungal cream or powder that contains terbinafine, miconazole, or clotrimazole. You can buy these products without a prescription. Brand names include Lamisil, Lotrimin, Micatin, and Monistat. Follow the directions on the package, and don't stop using the medicine just because your symptoms go away. Use the medicine exactly as the label says. If symptoms do not improve after 2 weeks, call your doctor.
* Rarely, ringworm of the skin causes large areas of blisters. If your ringworm forms blisters, you can use compresses (such as Burow's compress, which you can buy without a prescription) to soothe and dry out the blisters. After the skin is dried out, use antifungal creams that you can buy without a prescription.
* If you have jock itch and athlete's foot, you should treat both to prevent re-infecting your groin when you put on your underwear.

Are you sure it's jock itch? If an anti-fungal isn't helping, it's probably something else, could be a yeast infection (yes, boys can get those). You should see a doctor, they will know what's up and give you pretty meds to make it go away.

Are you sure it's even jock itch? I'm no dermatologist, but there're probably a dozen other fungal (or bacterial, for that matter) infections whose symptoms are similar.

If you really have been diagnosed with jock itch by a dermatologist (you said you aren't looking for a diagnosis), then you should have no problem getting a prescription for some stronger medication.

Currently, the issue with getting it checked out is that in a nation of free healthcare, I don't have healthcare. The Spanish bureaucracy, in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice's worker's strike, have pushed back my ability to get an ID card about five months, and now I have to wait for my birth certificate to arrive by mail at least another week or two. Then I can think about my ID card, and by the time I get my ID card I will be in the Spanish Army, where it will be irrelevant. I want to try to get rid of this before I enter the Army, or I'm going have one hell of a time.

Morocco is much better than Mexico. Although the one time in Mexico that I had to go the emergency room they took good care of me. The doctors are trustworthy as any other nation. You always have good ones and bad ones. My only suggestion is to find one that has a up to date clinic. In Morocco that is a sign of a decent doctor if you don't have a personal referral.

I'm not looking for a diagnoses, I am looking for people who have experienced the same problem and know of medicines that have helped them - as it says in the opening post.
Ahh, impatient are we?

A doctor will need to diagnose it so they know what type of infection it is so they can prescribe you the right antibiotics or whatever you need.

If you are not willing to dish out for a doctor (I assume you can pay for a doctor if you don't have a card) then keep using the fungal cream. Make sure you dry yourself thoroughly down there and don't use the same towel from down there on other parts of you body (can spread it). If that doesn't sort it out you are going to need more hardcore antibiotics (likely because it has been around for 7 months).

No, but it's still stupid to put money over your health.

Well, I knew it was jock itch and I know that jock itch doesn't tend to be serious enough to justify paying a lot of quid to go see a doctor (in Spain, at that), since it's fairly common within the ranks of soldiers that have to road march a lot (such as infantry). The problem is that it was the first time that I had gotten it and I didn't know what anti-fungal creams were the best to use, and since I know that it's fairly common I thought that there would be people who had experienced it and had used something that worked to get rid of it. Ultimately, if nobody knew how to get rid of it, yes I would go to a doctor. The issue isn't really the money either, since my parents in the United States would be more than willing to shuffle me some € to go to a clinic, but I didn't really believe it necessary.

It turns out I was right. I've been trying a mixture of both spray and cream; the former is Miconazol and the latter is Clotrimazol, and the jock itch is dissapearing.

I still don't understand how this topic of 'uncomfortable', and more over I don't understand that if it's so uncomfortable then why people post on it? This is much less uncomfortable, in my opinion, than the various threads on NationStates General on 'how freaky you can get', or 'what's the best sex you've ever had', or 'do you wear a G-string'. As the topic title says this was supposed to be a serious thread; I never had intentions of discomforting people, and the thread title is clear. If it wasn't something you wanted to read about, when you didn't have to - there was no intended shock value in the thread title to attract people to read it, especially since it said 'serious'. I didn't post pictures of my inner thighs, and I didn't give an overexaggerated and overillustrated description of the condition. So, in my opinion, it is a question of maturity. But, perhaps some people are more sensitive to some things than others, and less sensitive to other things - and this I can understand.

Oh puh-lease, I wasn't trying to make it "scary and red", I was simply trying to make it as idiotic as making a post about "jock itch".

Well, my 'idiotic post on jock itch' has actually served its purpose.

It's not that I'm sensitive, it's just that it would've been smarter to post it on a medical forum or see a doctor. Now, where I'm from, you can see a doctor for free if you need to, so I suppose I'm just coming from a different perspective. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I'm glad you're not itchy any more.

It's not making me ncomfortable. Just a person who has a problem they'd like advice for. I don't think you're attention whoring or anyting. I know I would seriously want to ask around to see what worked best for others if I had jock itch, myself. Definitely something you'd want to try to take care of in the msot efficient, effecitve manner possible. Anmd while maybe w'ere not all exactly frienda at NSG, it is definitely a community, and while it has its arguments, certainly it's a fairly nice, caring community, for the internet I mean. I don't think any of us would want a fellow NSG poster to suffer from rotten crotch longer than he had to, would we? That just wouldn't be nice.

Anyway, sorry for the typos and any incomprehensibility, I'm reallty fuckkiong drunk.

Write it in permanent marker on every piece of skin on your body. Then go to a tattooist and get them to make it permanent.

I got jock itch about seven months ago when I was still at Ft. Benning, Georgia, as an infantryman. Seven months later, in Spain, I still have it.
That's what you get for wearing another man's undies. You deserve no sympathy!

Remember kids - no matter how enticing they might look, never wear another man's gruds!
