Thousands dead in Chinese quake

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 8,500 people in China's south-western Sichuan province, up to 5,000 of them in just one county.

Many more are feared killed and injured in other parts of the country after the 7.8-magnitude quake struck at 1428 local time (0628 GMT).

At least 50 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a school where an estimated 900 students were buried.

President Hu Jintao has urged "all-out" efforts to rescue victims.

The epicentre of the earthquake was about 92km (57 miles) from Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.

First there was Burma, then there's China. With China busy with its own disaster relief response (which seems very good, if the BBC reporter was to be asked), do you think that it would affect the relief effort to Burma? Will it affect the preparations for the Olympics? Do you think it will affect you?

Also, condolences to the victims and their families. I hear many children were feared to be injured....

I think Earthquakes would be considerably entertaining fun if they didn't kill people. :(

we'll see China's response to offers of aid and hope it's better than Burma's.

Agreed. It's adrenaline-rushing fun once you decide your house isn't going to be sucked into the fault.

From the article...

US President George W Bush expressed condolences to victims' families, while Japan offered to send aid.

Yep, Japan already made the offer.

Natural disasters happen where they happen. It's a matter of natural forces at work, not which place God hates more.

I would like to point out the facts:

1) it is already established that God is an Englishman
2) nothing bad ever happens in England...apart from all the binge violence

nonononono, Kent is a new country seperate from England and the straits of dover, i think there could be a war happening between the straits of Gibraltar and the Straits of Dover but only time will tell. Let's hope the Atlantic doesn't barge in either or things could become a bit sticky.
