Once Upon A Time

As a would-be writer I've decided that I'm going to create a short story for the people here on this board of Nationstates and I wanted to see and get opinions. What kind of story do you want? I added a poll so people could vote for a genre and the selection other is available since there are too many Genres to manage. If you choose other if you could post what your other is here would be nice.

I also need characters for this story. And since it's for the people of this forum I wonder if any of the people here would like to be characters in this story?

Thank you and have a time.

Sorry if someone's done this before. I wouldn't know.

I voted sci fi as its far easier to create a world of wonder and disbelief with intriguing characters in a world where you can control everything.

i'm hoping it's fantasy without swords and dragons and shit, cuz i voted for it. i assumed it would be set in the present in an alternate universe or something.

Let's go with United Beleriand and Atlantian Islands instead. The combination should provide an endless source of amusement. :p

I'd like to hear the conflicted tale of Sirmomo1, whose love for his country knows no bounds... except for those of cold cash as he considers a move to the US.

It would be interesting if he was a writer as well, deeply aware of the character conflict between ideals and reality, mindful of the disparity between working for 'the arts' yet unable to resist the temptations of filthy lucre.

A classic case of the corrupted soul.

Infinite has the right concept to a degree. Modern fantasy is a fantasy tale that takes place in the present tense. Generally it's known for providing a more realistic variant of the old fantasy characters. Good case points would be the Dresden Files, Holly Black's wrtings, Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Anansi Boys. Michael Reaves Voodoo Child, Hell On Earth, and Vampire Hunter.

Just to name a few.

Erotic.
These two, please. :)

And you can put me in it, but under a different name, and if I recognize myself, I'll sue you spectacularly and milk the ensuing feud for all the publicity I can get. ;)

You can count me in as a character if you want.:D

I´m between horror and fantasy. I like both genres equally, although I can honestly say I´m a horror gal.

My love for my country knows plenty of bounds. I believe the internet terminology is "fail"?

I find horror boring.
I'd like to see a sci-fi. what does 'mystery' mean?
Things i'd like to see in the story;
a depiction of normal people (such as those you might pass everyday) doing what they would normally do in an alien environment, and fail badly yet end up saving the world or something magnificent.
I like well developed characters, and i'd like to see one in a debate with another on a political topic (or something similar), then maybe a time machine, with all the oddities of time-travel explained.

In this context "Mystery" refers to the classic concept of mystery. A "Who-dun-it" kind of story, in the fashion of Clue or the like. It could be a murder mystery, mystery noir, or any story where one has to really find out the culprit or cause of an event.

And while I would love to add that all into a story. It might prove to be a little challenging. I will work to add some of those concepts in though.

Probably a few chapters in length. Maybe four or five... no more then seven I'd imagine. And time-travel may be included dependent on the voting. So far it's leaning towards Sci Fi. Though I'll probably add some aspects of fantasy into it as well as they were getting some votes the last time I looked.

As a fellow writer I suggest that whatever it is, you make it a cross of at least two types. Like sci-fi and mystery for example.

i think more then genre as such, though as genre it generally tends to blur the lines somewhat between fantasy and real science fiction, is a context and setting, which is iconoclastic of familiar and comfortable assumptions, though not loudly or even entirely as its primary focus.

it may, and almost certainly would, have wonders, both natural to its universe and setting, and those of a tecnologcial nature, but preferably one in which those tecnologies were used, had evolved in the direction to facilitate their being used, to live closer to nature and its infinite wonderous diversity.

there could be magic, which is after all, only existence not entirely account for by knowledge, as indeed there is no reason to assume there is not in our own real lives.

plotwise it would be about the challanges of designing and creating such tecnologies and the infrastructures that depend upon them. of course the protagonists would be mortal and fallable, but it would not be about all the military soap opera type crap there is so much of in our world. not about people hurting each other, or having to face and deal with that people do. at least, again, not in the context of familiar assumptions.

i think what i've described is what makes for what i consider to be good science fiction and even good fantasy. of course everything would have to work belieivably, at least beleivably in its own context. as again, for any fantasy to be really convincing and worth a dam, and of course, for science fiction to be science fiction at all.

the fusion of science fiction and crime solving mystery genre's is almost always an interesting one, and then with a light touch of humourous whimsy here and there is good to, when it doesn't get in the way of suspension of disbelief.
