Stray Animals

So today we found a little dog shivering in our front lawn, we then went and bought it some food (which it didn't eat) and gave it some water. We then drove it to the nearest humane society which is about 40 minutes away.

Anyway, have any of you ever helped strays (of any kind, not just dogs)?

no i hate messing with other people's discarded animals.

i did take a beautiful white puppy that had made its way to my house in the middle of nowhere to the animal shelter. im sure he made some lucky person very happy.

About a month ago. Took in an older dog, gave it a bath because it was stinky and it took off the next morning when I let the dogs out do their business. A couple weeks later it she was wandering around again so I called animal control and they came out to pick her up. Hopefully she's with somebody who gives a damn about her whereabouts now.

Yes, on several occasions. I live in a fairly secluded area not too far outside a major city - in short, ideal dumping territory for assholes who think tossing their sick or unclaimed animals out of a car is acceptable behavior. My own dog was dumped when she was a puppy - she wandered into my yard and ended up staying (and she's been the best thing that ever happened to me). :) For a while, I also adopted another dumped dog to be a companion for her. I've personally also found homes for two dumped kittens, brought another dumped dog to a no-kill shelter, and fed but failed to catch a couple more lost cats. It's just sort of part of being a halfway decent human being and living where I do. :(

I hope it was one of those no kill shelters, otherwise the food and water may have been a waste of time.

I'm not sure if it was a no kill one, but it turns out the dog had a chip. Even if that doesn't pan out the dog was adorable and small. I think there is a good chance it'll get adopted.

Yeah our second dog was a stray IIRC.

I work at a no kill shelter, so I help them all the time!

But my family has helped 3 cats, 1 puppy, and a chihuahua. And some baby rabbits.

edit: my family has 2 dogs and 2 cats at the moment. All of which came from shelters.

We have a cat, we got her from the same shelter as our original cat and the one we gave the stray or runnaway to.

Our second cat, Stranger, was a stray. We found him in our back yard one night when we came home. He was skin and bones and begging for food so we gave him a can of food we had on hand for our other cat and coaxed him inside. That night he yowled until we let him out again and he was off like a shot. We figured that was the last we'd see of him but the next day we come home and there he is in EXACTLY the same spot begging for more food. We brought him in again and he yowled a lot less and eventually stopped yowling. We actually tried bringing him outside on a harness and leash (our other cat LOVES to go for walks, or rolls on the sidewalk when she's feeling too lazy to actually walk) and he panicked and tried to hide under the porch. He's very sweet and affectionate but seems to have some severe abandonment issues, every time he does something he seems to think we'll be angry over he either cowers or gets even more hyper affectionate than normal. With very few exceptions he hides from most people who aren't either me or Kbrook. He also has a weird issue with treats - if he has to go to any sort of effort to get the treat (say walking five steps) he assumes that it must be for our OTHER cat and not him. He'll do the same thing if our other cat starts eating from his bowl, instead of eating from hers he adopts this dejected pose that just screams "Oh well, I guess I don't get anymore food tonight . . . :(" until I SHOW him there is food in the other bowl.

Most of our cats in the last 15 years have adopted us. Right now we have three cats: mine, which came from the pound, and an indoor and an outdoor cat who were littermates born to a feral cat in our neighborhood. We just recently lost a 14 year-old cat that was one of a pair that my father discovered in a dumpster outside his work when they were just a few days old.

Except for our current golden retriever and the one before that, I believe all of our pets have been strays or adopted from the pound.
