Inquiry about York University

A few days ago, I recieved an acceptance letter from York University. Now I know many of you are probably asking, why should I care? Well, I have a question about the place that may help me decide wheather or not to accept, and if any of you are or have recently been students, perhaps you could provide an answer.

Recently I've been following a story about a group of Muslim students at York using the Human Rights Commission to harras Mclain's magazine over something they published. So what I want to know is wheather this is an aberation from the norm, or wheather York is exceptionaly full of politically correct students and staff who try to push there viewpoint on students. As a more general question, is the staff there composed mainly of serious accademics, ie, are they good teachers? That determines a great deal about the quality of a school.

Just to clarify, I'm not at all hostile towards York, in fact I'll probably go there. I just like to know everything before making such a big decission.:)

The_Blessed_Chris will probably say "yes, it's full of politically correct students and rubbish teachers", my own mother who's taking a course there would probably say "the students are standard student fare, and the teachers are pretty fine".

What're you studying?

He's doing History, she's doing some sciency pish involving the environment.

I mean good choices. Yes.

I'll be honest, York is actually alright if you're somewhat right-wing (Sheffield et al = leftie circlejerk, but there we go, I can put my socialist hat on if I feel like getting into the Union and all), and much better than most of the country in terms of its tolerance of non-communist thought.

Where else have you applied?

Ah, thinking of going to Jew U, eh? ;) (Inside joke; don't take offense)

It's a pretty decent school. Their business admin programme is excellent; so is history. I haven't seen a lot of negative press about it.

I love the campus (I went to Seneca@York). Sure it's in the middle of goddamn nowhere and it's vast open fields are a bitch in winter, but it's gorgeous in the summer. Every campus has issues. Though, I'm sure you would be more concern about potential crime.

I remember seeing notices about potential criminals but the bastards were always caught quickly. I never felt unsafe. There are plenty of buses running at all times. It's generally got a great environment.

I'm sorry to inform you but Skyland Mt is not talking about a British university. It's a Canadian university in Toronto. My main hint was the mention of Maclean's magazine, which releases a university edition every year, and in it they review all the universities in Canada. The schools are ranked on different criteria.

That's right. Skyland is talking about the real York University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_University) not the cheap British knockoff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_York). Take that you crumpet-eating fools!

Nah, Sheffield's quite Tory, but only because they're the only people who are politically active. (Well, apart from all five communists, but they don't count.) Most of us just get our subsidised Guardian or Indie and be done with it. Hardly a leftie circlejerk though.

Shh! You're not meant to tell them that they still belong to us!

We're going to have to send the Queenie hit squad over for another visit now to calm them down...

Just about any university is going to have some cadre of students and professors who will want to foist their political viewpoint on you.

If you were worried about how good the teachers were, why did you apply there in the first place?
