ATLANTA -- Georgia retailers soon will be banned from selling candy flavored to taste like marijuana to children.

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue signed a measure into law Wednesday that bans the sale of "marijuana flavored products" to minors -- anyone under 18 -- and calls for a fine of up to $500 for each offense.

The measure takes effect July 1st.

It targets businesses that sell the candies with drug-inspired names such as "Kronic Kandy" and "Pot Suckers."

The law says the candies promote drug use.

Senator Doug Stoner pushed the bill in the senate. "I don't think that folks are aware this is going on," Stoner told Channel 2 in April. "It's mainly, from what I can tell, particularly targeted to minority communities."

State Representative Judy Manning said she was shocked to receive death threats over the bill to ban the candy. "Some people think their rights are their rights," she said.

Manning said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation traced her e-mail threat to Great Britain. “You just deal with those kinds of folks and do the best you can. But it sends the wrong kind of message to kids.”

Vote Hemp, a national organization that promotes the use of hemp products and tracks legislation, says the measure would make Georgia the first state to ban the sale of the candy to minors.

Oh the irony!

Pot flavored candy? Really? Was anyone else aware of this?

I wasn't...

Also, I do not see any problem with the ban.

Why the hell would anyone want pot flavored candy in the first place?

Why? They're not selling pot, they're selling something POT FLAVORED. As far as I know you don't have to be 21 to buy wine gums, or those tequila flavored suckers . . .

Well, those things taste like stuff that's legal if you're old enough. Marijuana isn't legal. I guess that's the difference.

I agree with their reasoning that it is promoting illegal drug use...
Also, I wasn't aware of wine gums or tequila flavored lollipops...

Winegums originally contained alcohol and some drugs (by different flavours) or so I hear.

Agreed. Pot tastes like rancid ass on a nice toasted ass bun, with ass condiments on top. Served with ass fries, and a nice assy Soda to wash it all down with.

Honestly, there probably is no better way to get kids to *not* smoke pot than to let them see what it tastes like *without* getting high.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. More bans is only going to add to the allure and appeal of actual marijuana.

And of course now if they want pot flavored anything, they'll have to become criminals to get it!

Talk about the "wrong message."

Ugh, don't get me started on Brown's breathtakingly cynical drugs policy...

Pot tastes good? Sure, when you smoke it. Eating it? I did it because I was bored. It's nasty.

Ever actually tried brownies with marijunna in them?

They test like rubber. Pot ruins anything that might otherwise taste good.

And for what? A little buzz? For that matter I can drink alchohol. They make that chocolate and fruit flavored...
