Shooting.
So there's been a shooting outside my university. I don't know if people were killed but there's police tape everywhere. I can't find a news source for it just yet but I will as soon as I find one. The first I knew of it was when I turned up about an hour ago after a weekend at my parents place.
Just in case any of you wonder where the alleged shooting has taken place it's London.
I know something that will cheer you up.

That certainly narrowed it down... but did you have something to discuss, or did you misdirect a blog post?

But wait, I thought London had strict gun control laws! OMGZ!
And so begins the typical gun control thread. Just once I'd like to see one of these turned into a total farce. There is nothing funnier than death except for An Heroes. Even then I guess that counts as death-related but it's funnier than ordinary death because they pwn themselves in hilarious ways or for reasons that make you smile.
Not this shit again.

But wait, I thought London had strict gun control laws! OMGZ!
well it is all part of my evil plan to make money and end english gun laws.
first thing i do is smuggle in a bunch of guns and i sell them very cheaply to the Chavs. on the condition that they constantly make crank phone calls to emergency services.
end result being Chavs commit crimes with guns, and the police are too busy with false alarms to help anyone.
then I smuggle in more guns and sell at insanely marked up prices to people needing to protect themselves from the now armed chavs.
this shooting proves my plans are going as foreseen.

Crap. Which uni?
Here's hoping no one was killed.
That sucks, but it's not the first time some guy goes nuts. There isn't much that can be done to prevent it, other than try to make kids (and non-kids) understand the effect their actions may have on other people, ultimately leading to a shooting (if the guy is nuts).

I guess someone forgot to tell the shooter that firearms aren't allowed in England.
On a serious note, I hope nobody was killed.

I'm sorry. I thought this was an open forum to discuss things.

Latest, that we asked of the police officer outside, is that no one was killed but they have brought in search dogs and the armed response unit. The suspect is believed to be armed with a shotgun.

Which, without wanting to preempt the gun control debate that this thread will doubtless precipitate, is one of the only guns you can legally own in the UK.
So do you know whether it's connected with the university, or did the shooting just happen to take place nearby?

Seeing how big London is, i suppose it's just part of it. I mean how many people live there, 5 million?
I'm surprised there aren't more, well maybe there are they just aren't reported.

It took place on the nearby estate, near the place I'll be living in a few months actually.Scary stuff.

Excellent. Trees are nice aren't they, I mean you get so many species of trees...*continues rambling about trees.
I've said before and I'll say it again. The only way to stop crime, is to completely ban crime. If we ban it, no one can do it, right?
On a more serious note, I hope they stop this nut job before he kills anybody.

About 10 million people. And from people who have lived there, this thing is quite common and doesn't get reported in national news (mainly because it's rather trivial by now). And same can be said about places like Birmingham, Sheffield etc. (where there is only limited local news coverage on shootings).
This is mainly because it happens in areas where the media doesn't really want to go (doesn't affect anyone white or middle class), nor the police that often because the locals don't often report them.

It isn't on the BBC.
But thelondonpaper freaks me out on a daily basis. I live on the edge of Zone 1 but I very very seldom venture outside it. It's like Zones 2 to 6 are "DRAGONS BE HERE" zones (except, of course, dragons are not there but yobs are).

Clearly the only way to combat this situation is to arm the public. Shall we hold a Guns for Great Britain drive? We have a few spare Ak-47's, hand guns and assorted shot guns laying around. It sounds like you guys could put em to good use.

i am offering weapons to the rich in London right now. At highly marked up values to fight off the armed yobs
I suppose it's a positive thing that this is a bit of a shock in some places. It's started happening about once a week over on our side... in fact, a student was just murdered at Cal this weekend.

Actually you can own weapons in the UK. You need a Firearms Certificate or a Shotgun Certificate.

Not sure if you were being tongue in cheek or were not aware...apologies if I was incorrect but I know that it sometimes surprised people.
However firearms are also readily available on the street. Unfortunately.

I remember when the police raided a house and find enough firearms and ammunition to field a small army in some ones house.
The point being nobody seems to give a damn about the government.

I bet that's because even the dragons are afraid of getting mugged and eaten by the local scum.

Just in case any of you wonder, guns are illegal to possess in London. Apparently, making guns completely against the law doesn't stop university shootings.

That's because idiots keep passing laws like that, and assure us that it will make it all stop.
You have to keep repeating it to idiots who don't comprehend that it's violent people, not the guns, that are the problem.

You can't own a handgun. You certainly can't carry it around in your pocket legally. You can't own a handgun in the UK in the same legal sense that you can own one in the US in most US states. You couldn't get a carry permit if God himself came down and asked on your behalf.

I quite agree. He's just too disturbed to be at large.
In 1997 handguns were banned. Proposed exemptions for handicapped shooters and the British Olympic team were rejected.
Even more sweeping is the 1953 Prevention of Crime Act, which made it illegal to carry in a public place any article "made, adapted, or intended" for an offensive purpose "without lawful authority or excuse." Carrying something to protect yourself was branded antisocial. Any item carried for possible defense automatically became an offensive weapon. Police were given extensive power to stop and search everyone. Individuals found with offensive items were guilty until proven innocent.

Handguns are irrelevent, this shooting apparently involved a shotgun...which you can get a certificate for. Licenced shotguns can, of course, be carried in a case, provided they aren't loaded. Conveniently, not three posts before your first post a link was provided to the Met's webpage explaining how to acquire a firearms certificate...

What do you mean "proven innocent"? Having the offensive item is the offense. If you have it, you're guilty. There is no "proving innocent" about it.

what if that police officer planted it on him ?
was there more then one officer present ?
was the incident recorded in some way ?
we have trials for a reason, let the accused say his peace in his defense then judge him guilty or not guilty.
