Nostalgia for our roots.

I don´t want to makes this thread sound bloggy because I have my own blog somewhere online and NSG isn´t for that. But the Accents thread got me a tad bit nostalgic for my roots and I wondered if anyone else here felt the same way. Specially if you´re not living in your hometown.

I live in Madrid, but I hail from Oviedo (Uviéu), Asturias, as some of you already know and my mother sent me this DVDs called ¨Camín de Cantares¨, a special on Asturian traditions, including language, music and it´s people. I´ve been watching it since Thursday and I can´t stop feeling the tears coming on. And it comes even harder whenever I watch these 2 clips.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjhzBIZD87c&NR=1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INBRmfDjHMk&feature=related

The clips make me laugh too, but meh. It´s more the longing than anything else. I´ll try to explain the meaning of the conversation later.

Now, for those of you who are living on exile (not the proverbial one), what makes you nostalgic from your country?

I'm living in the country where I was born, so I don't really have anything to add... :(

I've never lived in another country but I did move to the south of england when i was 17 for a couple of years, I never thought I would miss Blackpool (anyone who's ever been will understand why) but I did, I missed the tourists and i definately missed the nightlife, and southerners aren't that friendly so i missed nice people, i always used to get nostalgic watching 'Peter Kay at the Top of the Tower' because it's filmed in Blackpool and the things he says are things my family and friends would always say when I was growing up, but southerners don't really say the same things

I totally understand you. Living in Madrid for the past two years and before for 4 years while attending to my BA has always shown me that nothing like home is better.

There are a lot of Asturians living in Madrid but we tend to always go back home to get married or to have out children in Asturias, so they too feel the love that we feel for our land.

I guess the saying of ¨You never know what you have until you lose it¨ is very true. At least, we can always go back.:)

Never having lived more than 30 miles or so from my birthplace I am not so much nostalgic for places as I am for time periods in my life. Though I am probably too young yet to be nostalgic for anything. :p

Hey, who you calling old? I´ll have you know I´m only 27.

It´s not so much as the age, it´s, to me, how attached you are to your birthing place. I guess that´s my lot in life, I´m too attached to Asturias. That´s why I feel nostalgic.

I wasn't calling anyone old.. so I think you just nominated yourself.
At any rate, compared to my mother, you are pretty darn old. :p That was a joke. Ha. Ha.

That makes sense.
The reason I don't have that much a connection with my birthplace is that it is so similar to where I am currently.

Though my birthplace was much more forested, which I do like.

Thinking of Asturia, and Oviedo, what Amaral album would you suggest I get if I was only to get one?

Yeah, that also makes sense. But for me, Madrid´s too different from Asturias to find comfort. That´s all. I grew near Muniellos, a national park and forest reserve in Spain. I don´t have that in Madrid, so it sucks I get moppy.

But enough! No more mopping! I have spoken.

I can relate to that. I am currently attending college in Chicago, although I spent my whole life in Kentucky (a southern state in the USA). I always saw Kentucky as a trashy redneck state, and truth be told it has many problems, but since I've left, I've realized the many good things it has. It has some beautiful scenery, amazing horse farms, and despite some conservatives (We host the Creation Museum :p), it has a bunch of really decent people and an interesting Appalachian culture. Today is the Kentucky Derby, our main claim to fame besides KFC, and I'm a bit sad not to be home for it. I always tear up when they play "My Old Kentucky Home" before the race.

Ah, a kindred soul when it comes to my nostalgia feelings. I miss Muniellos, I miss the pubs of Oviedo, I miss cider and fabes. I miss watching my people cheer at listening our national anthem. I miss hearing my grandfather talk about Xanas and Culebres, or his stories from when he was young. I miss eating bollines with cocoa. I miss hearing old men tuning their bag pipes and old women singing about the Virgin of Covadonga, our Santina. I miss so many things from home I want to cry now.:(

Nothing to be worried about. NS is addictive and it consumes you. I´ve been here for 3 or 4 months and I already have the post count of someone who´s been here since 2004-2005. Scary.

My hypothesis is that the bright white background coupled with the black text burns the image into your retina and then into the brain matter itself. This is why NS is so prevalent in those who have experienced the 'General Effect'.

I used to live in another town and commuted to my uni, but then I stumbled upon a great place to live around a time when the commute was starting to get to me. So I moved to uni town, but I still miss my old town - it feels like my home town, even though I only moved there in my teens. The irony is that once I graduate in June I'll be commuting back to that town because that's where I got a job for six months. *sigh*

I'm not moving back. As I wrote, I'll be commuting to the town I used to commute from. If this job goes on to something permanent in the old town, of course I'll move, but as it is now I'm staying put - mostly because I really do have a bitching place to live in a great location at a decent price. I have friends here of course, but I have friends in the other town as well... so, I feel drawn to both places.
