discussion of music anyone and any genre..

Daviiod

i am in an extreme state of tedium, just thought i would start a discussion of music, any and all music with no exceptions, no need to be like: "that band sucks, how could you like them!" lets be mature, if you dont like a genre or group simply disagree, the same way you would agree.

i will start this off, i will just say a few bands i like:
avenged sevenfold
atreyu
aiden
beneath the sky
dr.acula
the cure
the doors
gogol bordello
misfits
nirvana
Yootopia

I like :

The Smiths
Portishead (not entirely sure about Third, mind)
Interpol
Massive Attack
Some of Tricky's stuff
Placebo
Others.

To respond to your first post :

Avenged Sevenfold are rubbish. Just consider this idea when you next listen to their music, and your taste will improve.

I have an odd taste in music. I say that because everyone I know says that what I listen to is crap :p

Here are a few songs I like, so you can make your own judgement!

Ghetto Blasphemer by Rabbit Junk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xd2dGATAYU) (Gangsta Rap + Black Metal = Win)

The fall of arthrone by Unexpect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4wHkkWJ0Q8) (Not my favourite song by them, but great live video)

Wormwood by Callisto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Ze4mo1msY&feature=related) (Shame the Saxophone solo isn't on the live version, but still awesome)

Streetlight Manifesto, Bandit of the Acoustic Revolution, The Aquabats!, The Planet Smashers, Mad Caddies and Mustard Plug are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

Generally I like ska/ska punk (according to wikipedia) with some sort of horn section but recently I've realised I'm listening to the same songs over and over. Anyone think they can recommend me some music?

The Aquabats! still have good music, but they no longer have their brass section, so they've gone temporarily (hopefully, I mean, I love their music, but I want the Ska Boss back...) into a techno/synth band. Awesome Forces is still one of my favourite songs, though.

Cake is a funk rap (their name for the genre is fapfap, if I remember correctly) band with ska influence, and they have great brass bits in Short Skirt/Long Jacket.

if your into ska, i recomend choking victim or destroy everything

if you like that kinda sound listen to old skool raggae like Marley

if you like that "type" of sound here are some bands kinda influenced by it

skindred- reggaesque punk/hardcore
gogol bordello- gypsy punk

if you like punk you cannot go wrong with the misfits

i have a very lackluster taste of music, well at least in my own opinioni am always llooking for new music..so if any of you would like to educate me on some of your favorite bands i would appreciate it : D

No, if you don't like them, you don't like them, if you do, you do.

There's more to musical taste than a simple statement of like or dislike. It's an involved choice that ought to be based upon something more than first impression and a crude "me like this".

Can somebody explain the merits of Avenged Sevenfold and Aiden to me?

avenged sevenfold- an amazing, impossible to categorize band, transcends genres begining life as a metal/hardcore band, they have incorporated virtually every brand of music even tired genres such as country

aiden- taking influence from hardcore/punk bands growing up, as well as nirvana and the misfits, among others, have melded and mixed genres being labeled as "horror punk"to "Post-hardcore" to "gothicrock" to w/e
critics say they are the bridges to M.Manson, david bowie, the cure, the misfits, nirvana, and joydivision rolled into one.

i know these bands are either hated or embraced so its kewl if you dont like either of them, i do : D

for the most part i understand what chris is trying to say..
rather than have bland, mindless pop music that you hear once and say
"oh that sounds like something, people like, me likey",..
its more: "you know what i like this, im going to listen to more of this group, im not going to listen to this group because my friends like it or dont, or because they were on TRL(or w/e the fudge is on mtv these days ..) im going to listen to this because i like it"

i know that extremely crude and there are many other ways at looking at it but that was extremely simplistic in nature...(i am used to dealing with idiots)

If that is indeed what he was trying to say, then I can see the point...
My thoughts on it though are that I don't care what anybody else thinks of me music choices, if I like how it sounds I listen to it, no additional thought needs to be put into it, either I like it or I don't.

Elf was actually his first band (blues-rock/Southern rock) but that's a minor nitpick. Rainbow...I actually had their Long Live Rock N' Roll album for a while. I think I'm just starting to get bored of Dio's "polished" voice and style, because I've been getting into a lot rawer bands recently (I never used to like Lemmy's vocal style, but now I do) I don't really have any Metallica albums, but I do kind of like some of their early songs (and yeah, I've heard St. Anger was shit.) AC/DC, true, they do tend to get boring after a while, but their best albums, while not worth listening to back to back, you just can't ignore them. I'm thinking of getting early Sabbath as that was my first introduction to metal in general. (I used to have Paranoid as well) Diamond Head is another great band I forgot to mention, especially their debut (Lightning to the Nations) which I still don't have yet.

Because music is every much an intellectual pursuit as is art or literature, and one does not make crue decisions upon those.

It depends on the music in question. A symphony by Beethoven or (to be a little more on my home ground here) King Crimson's first album might be an intellectual pursuit. But Guns N' Roses' "It's So Easy" or Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me"? I think not.
