Well, Swedish schooling didn't exactly go for instilling a Pollard-esque accent in its pupils, but instead vied for a "pretty" English, which is of course futile as there is no such thing... but what I'm trying to say in this meandering is that it's not due to any choice on my part what sort of English I was taught - it was all Received Pronunciation on the tapes we got to listen to, and that's what "correct" is to me. I may not approximate it fully, but I at least veer towards it.

Interesting. I usually say Ih-rack or Ih-rark but I've been trying to say Eye-rack recently because apparently that's closest to the actual Iraqi pronunciation of it, but I could be wrong. Perhaps ear-rack is even closer.

Ny question for people here - in a word like "whip" or "whine" or "which," do you find yourself pronouncing the "h" after the "w" in those words or treating it like a silent letter?

Or do you just pronounce the "h" just to annoy people who don't?

I think when people pronounce the silent 'h' they say it before the 'w'.

Listen and you can hear it, it's like hur-wip, but with that first 'hur' slurred.

I personally don't pronounce the 'h'.

Garage: ggaarAAzye, starting with the vocalized version of the ch in loch, with an "alveolar flap" R, long open aa's and a shwa at the end, that's the only proper way to pronounce it. But alas, the vast majority of the NSGers won't be able to pronounce it properly. :D

Chillax man, it's just a word.

Also, people pronouncing debut as day-boo sounds really silly.

What, do you mean as opposed to day-byoo?

Or are you beefing against the general silent 't' pronunciation of day-byoo?

My take on the whole thing.

Hey cool! Snap!

That bugs me too, to the point where I have to restrain myself from an automatic correction because I do not want to be "that person".

Other annoying ones: For all intensive purposes, the use of words like whilst and amongst, and taking something "for granite". I encounter these FAR too often.

'Whilst' and 'Amongst' I accept as real words and I have no problem with. 'Taken for granite' is just a travesty though!

I thought it was "weuh-steuh-sheuh".

I'm pretty sure it's 'woo-stuh'.

Deh-BUTT sounds much better.

I'm pretty sure it's 'woo-stuh'.
With the -shire suffix at the end, as in the sauce, it becomes better to just mumble it.

Oh yeah, I was wrong - it is woo-stuh-sheer sauce.

"This file has been removed due to TOS or copyright violations"

One really does wonder WTF you said there to violate TOS regulations. Anyhow, the common populace demands a re-run of the thing.

I removed them myself. Tada.

Hmm.

I find that I pronounce 'route' the english way as 'root'.

But when I say 'reroute' I tend to use the American 'raute'.

...for TOS violation? That conscience can be a bitch, can't it just. So when will you deliver straight into my inbox/Skype window/whatever?

And don't you wish you were one? Hey, I've been online plenty these last days, it's you who've been MIA.

My pronunciation & grammar complaints:

"I could care less." So you care at least a little bit? I think you mean "I couldn't care less."

I've never heard anyone say "I could care less". It'd be really annoying if they did though.

Some of my language complaints are:

Stone deaf - instead of tone deaf

and

"You should of seen that woodpecker"

/ga'ʀaʒ/

/'ʊg:l/

/'niʃ/

for those who can read IPA.

I only know one Irish guy in Dundee.
so i don't know many Northern Irish folks, i suppose that would explain why i couldn't tell the difference, that or your voice is just taking on a Scottish accent.

You're from Dundee?

Ditto, never met anyone on the interwebz from Dundee before!

I've tried it these days, and found it not to be to my liking. Sorry, things are moving around a bit IRL, thus limiting my idle online time.
