Give a helping hand to science

Through the many months I have been lurking (and occasionally posting) on this board I've noticed people are from a wide range of backgrounds, personalities and viewpoints. So I figure when it comes to collecting data from a large cross-section of the population, where better to come.

Our personalities can have a large impact on how we interact with other people under a variety of social situations. As part of my PhD I am research how specific personality traits interact to affect your social behaviours. Research which will have an impact on our understanding of how we interact under various circumstances. Also, I am offering a prize draw of up to £50 in Amazon gift vouchers as compensation for time spent.

I am looking to recruit English-speaking Europeans from all walks of life to complete an online study.

All you need to do is visit this link (https://psycfs1.psych.york.ac.uk/gemma)
Enter the username and password (this is to ensure security and anonymity of responses)
Username: webgcw
Password: Gemma123 (case sensitive)
And follow the instructions on screen.

All participants who complete the test will be entered into a random Prize Draw with the top prize of a £50 Amazon Gift Voucher, with several £10 gift vouchers for the runners-up.

Responses are completely anonymous and the test will take under 45 minutes in total to complete, which you can do in several sessions. To ensure the validity of the measures, I can only accept participants who are over-18.

I am leery to post too many personal details over an open forum (for obvious reasons), however I can assure you this is genuine. I am a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the University of York, UK. Feel free to PM me or e-mail me at gcw102 @ york . ac . uk (minus the spaces) for more details. Or indeed post in this thread and I'll try to respond (although there's only so much I can say prior to completion with biasing the results).

Finally, apologies to the Mods if this is against the rules, I couldn't see anything in the guidelines.

I'm afraid that I don't think you can do this. As funny as it might sound when dealing with a PhD student, I think it would probably fall under 'homework help'. :p

I quite like this so I will fill it in, however what I'd like to know is what you planning on doing with this psychology PHD :) (and also how you got amazon to give you free stuff)

I guess Amazon just sells vouchers, and he bought some for this :)

Does 8 months in Germany make me a European? Or am I still a Yank, and useless in this case? Since my stay in Germany is almost over, I'm willing to bet the latter.

Don't wanna mess with your results.

I'd argue it's not 'homework help' as I am not asking for answers or help writing an assignment, it is an acceptable (within the academic community, the mods may not) method of data collection for a genuine, and to be published, research project. However I'll acquiesce to a mods call on this.

Amazon is not, the department is paying for the incentive. There is research money set aside to compensate participants. With regards to what I am doing, well furthering the knowledge of social behaviour obviously :p. In more seriousness, I can't realistically give out too much information without biasing results prior to completing it, but feel free to PM/e-mail me once you're done and I can fill more in.

i'll give it a spin see what happens.
have fun mr phd guy.
done.
now that's a huge amount of questions, took me about 35 minutes to complete.
and many of the questions i found to repeat but in a different manner. which i found quite irritating. but i suppose if it's research then there must be a good reason for it.

Ah, the joys of not biasing a study. It's even more fun over the phone, you have to keep control over your tone of voice and emphasis to make sure you're not influencing the results. (I did outbound market research for awhile. would love to get back into it, I had a really good time.)

EDIT: Much as I would love to help, I'm a Yank. Wouldn't help you. Phooey.

Does European mean nationality or ethnic origin?

Nationality... or more to the point the culture you grew up in.

Guess that rules me out. I've matured here, but you can't say I grew up in Germany, by any means.

Me neither then. I am British but I was brought up elsewhere. Sorry.

Well since we elected a pirate as our SU president*, it's not like we can use Student politics for our politics fix now is it.

*Seriously, he ran as a joke with an entire platform based on plundering lancaster and making the University admin walk the plank. Then he got elected by the biggest margin ever seen. Yes I voted for him :D

Bloody hell has this been a long week (or I would have done this earlier).

A bit of threadomancy to thank all of those who have taken part so far, your help is much appreciated. I will be updated the forum with the results when I'm done (in a few months) if people are likely to be interested.

If anyone missed the original, I am still looking for participants and the prizes are (of course) still up for grabs.

Yup, eastern Europeans will be fine.

Explain how I will receive my prize please :p

There are two lists, one with an ID number and your e-mails address (from the first page) which will be used to generate the prize draw (which will then be e-mailed to you, the joy of amazon gift vouchers) and the one with everyone's actual data. Never the two shall meet.

Yes, theoretically I could track participants back but that would be a gross violation of professional ethics (which can result in university and BPS disciplinary actions) and (I believe) the Data Protection Act.

Or was that not a serious question :p. I did feel it was worth clearing up.

Alright done:D

Do let us know the results of the study (maybe by email);)

I personally tend to think that temperament affects our lives a lot in terms of how others percieve us, what we are inclined to believe, even what religion we choose, though it would be interesting to see what science says:)

That you might have been from York University :p

Anyway, with the amount of people here residing in York, we should go for a Very Tiny NSG Meet-Up at some point, methinks.

The actual University of York, I can assure you :D

It is quite scary how many there are, I think at least 4 on the last count... and we're not exactly a big University (until they finish Heslington East of course)
