What Games DO You Like?

I was reading the GTA4 thread, and was quite surprised to see that a game that's predicted to sell more than this summer's biggest blockbuster, and that regularly gets a rating between 9/10 and 10/10, has been getting slammed so hard by the NSG community.

Are you all just PC gamers, and really could care less about consoles? Are you all just fans of different genres? I am the latter, playing mostly RPG's and Sports titles with the occasional action game thrown in. What about the rest of you?

My favourite games of all time in order are:

GTA San Andreas
Broken Sword: the shadow of the Templars
Deus Ex
Final Fantasy VII
Rome Total War

I am totally addicted to Mount&Blade, a game made by some independent Turkish developers. You essentially ride around on horseback with a rag-tag band of mercenaries and murder your enemies, but it boasts the most realistic medieval combat I've seen in a game, and is enormously fun. It's still in Beta, but is great none-the-less.

I mainly play RPGs and strategy games (the real kind, not RTSes).

FF7 is above average, but there's way in hell it's top ten material.

I generally avoid sports games and shooters. Yes, I have Wii Sports and Goldeneye N64, but...

And now, if you'll excuse me, it's time for some more Gemfire.

Oh and just so I get my word in, I'm a sucker for traditional console RPG's.

Final Fantasy Series
Breath of Fire Series
Shin Megami Tensei Series
Chrono Cross/Chrono Trigger

These take the cake. I'm just finishing up playing Final Fantasy Tactics on my PSP. They didn't have Onion Knight and Dark Knight back when I beat it on PS1.

i'm a casual gamer these days, so things that are quick to pick up, easy(ish) to play, and can be played 10 minutes here, half an hour there, are what i go in for these days.
i used to be all about RTS's and would spend hours and hours on the same game, but i just don't have the time any more. plus i feel like i've been there, played that, for the most part.

current favourite games: Mario Kart Wii, Lego Star Wars (TCS), Mario Party 8, some Live Arcade things, Guitar Hero... that's about all i can think of

looking forward to: GTA IV (i know its an old 'been there done that' format, but i especially like the escapism, amongst other things), Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii, Spore, Battlefield Heroes, Fable 2... probably others :)

what's the next Total War game to come out? cos they've always been great

Battlefield 1942 (the Desert Combat mod is a bonus), Battlefield 2 (although I haven't played in a while, because it's not installed on my new computer yet), and City of Heroes/City of Villains (I haven't played that in a while either, for the same reason as Battlefield 2).

I'm not much of a gamer anymore since I had the children. :( It goes downhill every year.

I enjoy puzzle games and one on one fighting type games. I also like quest games except Zelda which I hate. Nearly all the games I have for my PS2 are rated "E", I have like Lego racer and Lego Star Wars and all three Guitar Hero games.

I got a DS for Christmas from my kids....I have Brain age and some puzzle games and Super Mario III (which was leftover from the GBA they bought me, which I handed down to hubby, he has Zelda and Final Fantasy and stuff)

You can always buy games for yourselves and keep them locked up so the little ones won't get their hands on it.

I like fighting games, or used to when I was younger. Not as much fun since I don't have my brother around to thrash. I enjoy most RPGs, MMOs. I also like a good space combat game. Star Trek Klingon Academy for instance, damn fine game. Any game that lets me utilize tactics to do the seemingly impossible is a good one in my book (Such as oh say destroy a Federation star base with a glorified Romulan shuttle). I enjoy WarCraft III and regularly play on Battlenet custom maps (Enfo's TS, Tank Wars, Hero Wars).

Oh, they aren't rated "E" out of consideration for the children, I've just mellowed. I've mellowed a LOT. Most of my youthful desensitization has gone by the wayside.

If you like puzzle games and have a DS, I believe you can put the ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) engine on it and run old style point a click games :)

which neatly bring me to one of my favourite genres, and one of my favourite games Beneath a Steel Sky (which is incidently, now freeware). :)

Other then a slew of games in that genre, I quite like RPGs that focus on socials skills (frex, the first 1/2 or 2/3s of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines).

Also the occasional FPS too. And Civ, though I stay away from that. It's like crack.

Ratchet & Clank (PS2) - I have all the titles except the new PS3 game and "Size Matters"

Morrowind (PC) - Somehow a better game than Oblivion despite the aged graphics

Halo: Combat Evolved (PC) - I love that first Halo game. I play online frequently. I'm Tothe there, too.

Old-school PC games: AOE1, Lords of the Realm 2, Worms 2, Descent, C&C, and C&C:RA

FF1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12 (PS1 versions of all of them)

Legend of Dragoon (PS1) - Good non-FF RPG. Excellent combat combo system.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (Xbox) - fun, unique, comedic.

Crash Team Racing (PS1) - best kart racing game out there.

Terminal Velocity (PC - DOS, even!) - good scifi flight game.

The N64 may still be my favorite console - GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, both Zelda games, Donkey Kong 64, Mario Kart, and many other great games.

1: DN 3D - Those 1 liners still make me laugh to this day.. "I don't have time to play with myself" *tehee*
2: Starcraft. Possibly the best RTS of all time simply because the gameplay and the storyline were superb and the graphics wernt that bad either
3: D&D Baldurs gate 1+2 (PC) - An epic DnD romp through the forgotten realms. One hell of a storyline if a lil clunky and har at times.
4: C&C + C&C:RA - Definately up there with Starcraft.. didnt quite have the story to rate higher than this in my ooks but an awesome time waster all the same.
5: Worms (original) - Cant beat it.. so much fun. Always loved getting that Banana bomb spot onbtarget and watching my enemy be blown to the wind.

I'm definitely a PC gamer. For nearly all of my life, console games were something I played at someone else's house, and with the sole exception of Halo, I never got very good at them.

My favorite games of all time:
Half-Life 2 & Episodes (Portal is included, as it is part of the HL franchise)
EVE Online (close second)
Age of Empires series
Dawn of War
Rise of Nations

If you're wondering why I marked AOE above DoW, it is because AOE was the first RTS I ever played, and consequently, the one I am best at. It holds a place in my heart that some reserve for Mario or Final Fantasy - the franchise they've loved for years. I own every single AOE game, and when AOE IV comes out, I will promptly buy it.

IV is easier than III, I think. It' also seems more "user-friendly," which I realize is kind of weird way to describe a program that is supposed to be fun. But after playing IV for a while, I'm starting to see that part of reason III was cool was the almost esoteric knowledge required to be good at it. Kind of like with Settlers of Catan, another (non-computer) game I like.

SimCity (4 not so much)
The Sims 2 (so much better that 1)
Kings Quest (all of them except 8 - the main character sounded too much like The Brain for me to take him seriously, and the movement system sucked. SUCKED. BALLS.)

I own about 80 games. I feel like I've wasted my life.

Internet Checkers.

I quit playing Internet $GAME when other players started abandoning games when I'm just about to win or when I take longer than two seconds to consider a move. This is especially obnoxious:

<GameHost> Move already!
<TheLoyalOpposition> I'm thinking...
*TheLoyalOpposition has been kicked and banned from table*

What about the rest of you?

I'm constantly re/playing:

Deus Ex
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Tachyon: The Fringe
Simcity 2000 (via DOSBox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dosbox))
GNU Backgammon (http://www.gnubg.org)

I also like the Myst series, but am hesitant to include it as a favorite. The extremely immersive and interactive environments (especially ambient sound/music) are brilliant (especially Uru), but the storyline isn't similarly engaging. Thus I'm left with simply solving difficult puzzles with little or no real payoff. This can become very frustrating very quickly.

EDIT: I also tried getting into Battle for Wesnoth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_for_Wesnoth) but very quickly tired of the "Too many moves! You Lose!" feature. I assume this feature is common to most RPGs. This would explain why I don't play them.

Games on the original Sega Megadrive.

Sonics 1, 2 and 3 in particular - awesome.

Bubsy? Anyone remember Bubsy the cat?

Oh, those kinds of games. The only computer game I play on a regular basis is City of Heroes/VIllains. Best MMORPG ever. :)

CoX is awesome, I have farrrr too many Alts, generally on Heroes but Villains is getting my attention at the moment (I wonder why).

However, when not engaged in my City of Heroin (I mean Heroes) habit I tend to like turn-based and real-time strategies and some God-sims:

Medieval II: Total War
Dawn of War*
Civ IV (and III)
Heroes of Might and Magic (3 onwards)
Rome:Total War (only so low because haven't had a chance to play it properly yet)
Settlers
Pharoah
Ceaser III

*As well as being a good RTS it's set in Warhammer 40K, which is an awesome universe and may cause me to brush off my minis and start playing the tabletop game again

I use a Mac because its better at things like editting video (I'm going to major in film production at university). Its just a pity it won't run most games, and those it does run seem to be more expensive. Ah, well, you can't have everything.;)

why are macs better at editing video?

*uses PC/laptop to edit video using Adobe AE&Premier, Ulead, and striped RAID*

i should have added earlier that i love Sim City games :)
though Sim City Societies was a major letdown :( (edit: read "big steaming pile of shite)

I have a PC and a console. I don't care for favouritism - you play games to have fun, not pick a side and fight with the other kids over which toy is better. Both have something to offer me, so I have both. Although admittedly, my PC isn't up to snuff these days; it was the best you could build four years ago, but it hasn't had much lovin' since. That said, it can still run Oblivion and things on high graphics, but things like Crysis and Call of Duty 4 make it cry.

Anyway, I've got a few favourites from years gone by, so I'll just mention a couple of them in no particular order:

Mass Effect (360)- if you couldn't tell from my username, I love Mass Effect. Such a great storyline, so many moral choices that really make you question yourself and how you'd respond in certain circumstances, great characters that you suddenly find caring about when you're faced with sacrificing one, and one of the most cohesive sci-fi universes ever dreamed up. Looks pretty too.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC) - another Bioware classic there. One of the few games which has truly left me devastated when it ended and there was no more! The only Star Wars worth looking at, better than the films. Just don't mention KotOR 2...
Half-Life (PC) - the original, and the best. Revolutionary for its time, too, more so than most of the so-called 'revolutionary' games that have come out recently.
Startopia (PC) - the best game that nobody played! Seriously, it rocked and was incredibly addictive, especially fiddling around with the biodeck. If you can find a copy on Ebay or something go for it.
Urban Assault (PC) - another unloved classic, this merged RTS with FPS all wrapped up in a unique sci-fi storyline. Looked awesome at the time as well. I still play it a lot when I get the urge.
Another World (DOS) - pretty old, but it was an awesome and revolutionary game at the time, and still is pretty damned good.
SiN (PC) - if you've been tainted by the rather disappointing SiN Episodes: Emergence, which never actually had more than one episode, try the original for a great blast from the past. Scuppered a bit by the coinciding release of Half-Life 1 and some nasty bugs, but in these days of powerful PCs it's a great romp. I actually enjoyed the Wages of SiN mission pack even more!
Age of Empires 2 (PC) - the game that proved that not all sequels were crap. Might be dated, but it's still a lot of fun.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive) - the game that made you question the morality of running over hedgehogs for the rest of your life, and one of the most entertaining split-screen modes ever. Simple, but effective.
Ristar (Mega Drive) - pretty revolutionary for a platformer, this had you playing as a shooting star who could reach out and grab things with his elasticated arms. This allowed you to spin around on poles and accelerate into the air (just as one would expect a shooting star to do), but also grab hold of enemies and collide with them to destroy them. It was a lot of fun once you got the hang of it. Someone also mentioned Bubsy, which was cool but not one of my favourites.
Mafia (PC) - like GTA with a brain and some decency, this brilliantly cinematic game tells the story of Tommy Angelo, a down-on-his-luck taxi driver during the Great Depression, and his epic rise through the ranks of a local mafia family before ultimately turning state's evidence. Beautiful graphics for its time, much more realistic city and driving experience, a lot less obnoxious than the GTA from which much inspiration was taken, an epic and emotive storyline with some great narrative, and one of the saddest endings in a video game. It's up there with the best mafia movies, let alone video games. Its authentic musical score won awards too, I believe.

Well, more than a couple then!

I'm mostly a PC Gamer, but I know somethin' about console gaming ;)

A list that is by no means complete, and is always changing:

Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates
Ocarina of Time
Gears of War
Starcraft
Europa Barbarorum (a mod for RTW)
The Duke Nukem series
I Wanna Be The Guy (Yes. I actually like that godforsaken game.)
Guilty Gear series
Aegis Wing
Dead Rising
Devil May Cry 1,3 and 4
Laerod

Heroes of Might and Magic (3 onwards)
There must be some kind of mistake. Surely Heroes II was the best of the lot.

KOTOR was very good.

I have a demo disc for Startopia. It looks awesome. I need to look for the full title. thanks for the reminder!

I have Half-Life for PS2. Excellent game, unique story, and the co-op parallel story is good, too, with all the ways it ties in to the main game.

*edit* How could I forget! Marathon 2: Durandal on an old Macintosh PowerPC! Way better than any Doom game could ever be.

Transportation Tycoon on DOS. Surprisingly good graphics and soundtrack on such an old game. The AI was pretty stupid, though, building a zig-zag train track 3x longer than needed. I pwnd the AI every time.

Possibly, I do actually have it now and have been meaning to play it. But I didn't get into the series until Heroes III and going back in a series always makes my eyes hurt due to graphics and (frequently) clunkier gameplay. Personally I feel Heroes V has a lot going for it in terms of refinement.

Most of the Final Fantasy games, Call of Duty 4, GTA series, Total War series(except I haven't played Shogun), Empire Earth, AoE, CIV 3, Sim city series(minus sim city 3000), Oblivion, and I believe thats it.
