Well Grand theft auto 4 has been released in the UK and already people have been attacked for it, schools are ripe with mindless conversation about it and the news and internet are full of rumors about it being banned because too many children play it. Suck ass much?

What do you expect, a baseless game of random wandering around. I find it to be quiet boring ...
Its all hype I guess, either that or peope are easily amused.

I am enjoying it. Difficult to tell so far if it is as good as San Andreas. As for all the media hype they only seem to quote people who haven't played the game. I thought San Andreas was in some ways a modern morality tale about the harm drugs do to communities, and how people will try to fill the gap left by a community with a gang.

GTA I
GTA II
GTA III
GTA Vice City
GTA San Andreas
GTA IV?

Am I the only one who thinks the name itself is hyped up let-down :p

Why do I get the feeling that most people whining about it being overrated and bad haven't even played it?

The game HAS a story, and you don't HAVE to aimlessly wander around. The game will always tell you what you need to do next to progress the story, and guess what, that's exactly how I play the game; I don't bother with anything that isn't connected to the main story. I don't feel that it's a perfect 10 game either, but it's far from bad, and the game having some underage and/or dumb fans doesn't change that.

My only complaint is that they seem to have taken away some of the features that made SA so good. Like the stats that you could improve with practice (getting stronger by working out, getting better with specific weapons by target shooting with them, getting better at swimming the more you did it, etc.) and a lot of the extra stuff you could do.

It's a good game, no doubt about it, but so far I liked SA more.

Now that you mention that swimming bit in SA, that actually really annoyed me. You get to one of the missions nad you have to have you lung capacity up to a certian point to do it. A point you can only discover by trial and error. And you have no real need of it at any point before this, so you could well have to start from scratch. I know they want to show off the new fancy features, but forcing us to grind to finish the missions is just a pain in the bollocks.

There is a limit to the number of times they can re-release a game. Sure, the stories differ slightly and the water effects are slightly more shiny, but it still the same old GTA:
1. Escape from police
2. Sit through annoying long winded title scene
3. Bash up ho
4. Escape from police
5. Bash up druggy
6. Escape from Drug runners & police
7. Bash up government official
8. Escape from police
9. Get bored, drive around stealing cars
10. Escape from police

You have to agree that while there used to be a novelty factor of the game play, that disappeared after GTA3... Good idea, but need to know when to let it die.

This is a frankly immature post. The narrative of the game is a crucial component in its appeal, approximate to the quality of gameplay, and yes, the violence.

I tried it, and from what I can tell, it's really good. Yes it's like the other GTAs but in a different decade (I think 4 is modern...), different characters and different story.

Nope. Which, given how much time I wasted on San Andreas, might not be a bad thing actually...

While I'm not really a fan of GTA4 (yes I have played it), I have to agree that this is kind of an unfair assessment. ANY game is boring and uninspired when you boil it down to it's basic components like that.

Final Fantasy VII:

1. Walk around.
2. Talk to random NPC's
3. Bash monsters
4. Get better weapons
5. Bash Monsters
6. Sit through boring cutscenes full of "story" and "plot advancement."
7. Bash more monsters.
8. Knights of the Round.

Halo:

1. Shoot things
2. trade weapons
3. shoot things
4. obligatory cutscenes
5. shoot things
6. shoot things
7. shoot things
8. blow things up
9. shoot things
10. Wait for sequel.

Tetris:

1. Drop block
2. Drop block
3. Drop block
4. No cutscenes! (Story is for pussies!)
5. Drop block
6. Drop block
7. Drop block
8. Line

I'm just sayin.

The nearest games console that I know of is in another hall half an hour away, and the nearest shop that sells games isn't much closer. Although to be quite honest I've not taken much interest in new video games for a long while. I'm happy with my PS2 at home at any rate.

If it's not a racing game or a sports simulation, it's better on the PC. Racing games are usually better on consoles, and sports sims can go either way.

I've loved all GTA 3 games on the PC- though I've utterly HATED everything that has got anything to do with flying missions!

Flying is fun when it's just something you do - but the controls of the planes and (remote) helicopters were gruesome!

I guess my friends and I spent so much time fucking around in between missions that all the stats were pretty high when they needed to be.

But the ability to make your character better was something I definitely liked.

Just the addition of swimming already was a vast improvement. That was my biggest gripe with Vice City. The setting of the game is based on Miami, yet your character can't swim. That's fucking retarded.

I got it on Tuesday, I cannot describe how fucking awesome this game really is, no game has such an amazing interactive experience in such a huge, living and breathing city like Liberty City. The only people who I have seen not actually like this game are wapanese whiners who fellate to their hideously linear JRPG's.

Me and my friend went straight from Harold and Kumar to Gamstop at midnight to pick it up on it's opening night. I've barely moved from the couch since then.....in fact, sometimes I don't even get up to go to the bathroom if the mission is too intense.

I'm in love with all the GTA games and this one is no exception. There are parts about San Andreas that were better, (more character customization) but there are also parts of this game that are better. For example, the plot, characters and voice acting are all easily oscar winning, if they gave oscars to video games. I don't think I've ever played a game with characters this good. Also, the game stays interesting with so many plot twists and dramatic scenes that you really get into it, and I've only JUST got the second island unlocked. Also, I really like what they did with how you can make friends that can help you out with stuff......but I miss owning property like the Malibu club in Vice City...(though I'm not even close to finishing the game so maybe there is cool property and stuff you aquire through the storyline later on).....

Anyway, it's easily an awesome game and just as good if not better than San Andreas.

Anyway who is anyone should like this game.
