Hello there Good people of NSG.
I am having issues with my computer that is running Ubuntu.

The first issue is that any time I try and change my screen saver, ubuntu seems to crash and then it logs me out.

The second issues that I am is having is that I am unable to download anything. Whether it is strait off the internet, through the synaptic package manager or through the update manager, it simply will not work.

I have posted this question to the ubuntu help forums and have had no reply, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask around here.

I have no idea what details would be helpful for me to include, that could help in solving this. If you ask I will do my best to answer
:)

You could stop trying to change your screensaver.

yay for xkcd.

Rambhutan, your suggestion is not helpful in the slightest, please believe me that if this was something that I didn't need I would leave it be. However, there are reasons that I need my computer to just work no mater how mundane the task. In the future please do not post unless you have something useful to add.

Perhaps you could take my post as a subtle hint that this is a discussion forum not a Linux helpdesk.

I know that this is NSG.
In the past when people have asked for help regarding various computer related questions many people from NSG have posted to help them. What I'm asking is not unprecedented. I have no delusions that this is a Linux Helpdesk of any form. You have no need to hint at anything, if you do not like my thread or my question...please stop posting.

Are you able to surf the net? In other words, is it only when you want to download something that you have the problem?

Posi always knows what's up with Linux. Try sending him/her a private message?

Go to the command, line, type: rm -r then reinstall WinXP. :p

Being able to surf but not download sounds like you're behind a router or another kind of hardware firewall that is set to block outgoing connections on less common ports and only allow the common ones like port 80 that is used to surf.

Screensaver crashes sounds like you are using the wrong 3D drivers. Search in Synaptic for "fglrx" if you have an ATI card or "glx" if you have a Nvidia card.

My internet connection is through the university that I attend. They do have our connections running through a proxy server. Beyond that I don't know what all they have in place. I know that for my laptop running windows, avg for example can get through with its automatic update as long as I have it connecting via the proxy.

My Video card is a 3dfx Voodoo5 5500...

Well, one thing that might help is checking if synaptic is going through the proxy. Look under preferences somewhere, there's an option for the proxy server.

Also, Xlock beats the default gnome screensaver.

In KDE I would open K-Menu->System Settings->Network Settings->Proxy Servers and change the radio button from "Connect directly to the Internet" to "Auto detect proxy settings".

Does anyone know how the proxy settings look on Gnome?

A search for "voodoo" turned up the packages "libglide3" and "xserver-xorg-video-voodoo", those could be worth a try.

I set the system proxy and tried changing the proxy settings for synaptic, and it did not work. =\

the thing with the scree saver is that if try to open the screen saver control panel the whole system crashes and I have to log in again.

According to the computer the latter of those is installed. It says its the driver for the voodoo1 and 2..whereas i have the voodoo5...

I've tried setting the prxy but I do not have the " Auto detect proxy settings." option...

We've found one problem then. You're using the package for voodoo 1 and 2 but should be using libglide3 that is for Voodoo 3, 4, 5 and Banshee according to it's description.

Ask the network admin what you should set the proxy settings to to use their proxy?

That I am aware of the University only has 2 proxy's and I have tried both, with no luck. \
Once I get that sorted then I can download the libglide3, at least I'm making some progress now.
Thanks for helping

Warning: I know next to nothing about computers.

What if you plug into the internet through something other than your university server? I mean, if it's a laptop, can you take it to one of those free wi-fi internet cafés and see what happens there?

Because if it works fine, then you know it has something to do with the university server, right?

Its a good suggestion. I am fairly certain that it would work if I took the computer off campus, the only problem is, the computer is a desktop, so its a little hard to lug about =\

Nonsense, Improv Everywhere have disproved that. Perfectly possible.
