If I have to choose, milk is my favorite, but I like pretty much any chocolate other than ludicrously potent super-dark chocolate - that stuff is just too bitter for me.

*droool*

I don't know if it's possible for them to be better than Lindt's seasonal chocolate carrots/icicles (made of milk chocolate blended with hazelnut cream), though. Those things are like pure, edible happiness.

And even they run up against stiff competition in the form of the dark chocolate pomegranate truffles I once got from a random little hole-in-the-wall confisserie in Chicago...

Oh, chocolate, how I love thee.

I find the key lime ones a bit too...I dunno, not exactly artificial, but not exactly real either...I guess the best way to describe it is both too sweet and too tart at the same time.

I have to say we really are deprived of really great chocolate in the US. Lindt and Ghirardelli are both good but one time my mother's friend went to Germany and brought back the most amazing chocolate ever. I couldn't read the label but it was in a purple wrapper and said "milka" or something, so I assume it was milk chocolate. Man it was so good though.

I need to go to Europe and just indulge in chocolate.

Whenever my grandma goes to England (not much, anymore), she brings back candy. Smarties and Roses and Fruit Pastilles and... all yummy candies. I need to see if I can get some of those in Canada - not too far from the border.

When I visited London, I was fortunate to come during a time when the Magnum ice cream company was releasing its "Seven Deadly Sins" bars. Revenge (raspberry and dark chocolate) was the best use of chocolate on ice cream I have ever seen. It truly was "a dish best served cold."

dark chocolate about 60% with some caramel is heaven.

milk if it's not cheap (blame Ruffy)

I have only had white chocolate once that didn't make me vomit, and it was still way too sweet.......I don't think white chocolate should be called chocolate because it doesn't have cocoa and therefore sucks ass.

OK, because I love you all, here's the recipe for drinking chocolate my wife and I extorted from a nice lady at the Wedel chocolate... joint? uh, the place where people gather to drink chocolate, I don't know if there's proper English name for it. This one. (http://www.wedelpijalnie.pl/nasze_lokale/warszawa_-_ch_arkadia/34) The stuff is heavenly and it's exactly as good as it's at that place, only several times cheaper and enjoyed at home.

INGREDIENTS:
200 ml milk, 3% fat
100 ml sweet cream, 30% fat (fresh, preferably UHT)
100 g half-sweet chocolate (dark, not milk, but not bitter)

Boil the milk mixed with the cream, add pieces of chocolate, stirring constantly, keep stirring while it simmers until the chocolate gets as dense as you like - I keep it on the flame until it resembles honey. Pour into espresso cups and enjoy!

Why nibs, why not powder? Of course, it'd be pretty much standard recipe for drinking cocoa if you replaced nibs with powder...

Sigh....

Youre one of THOSE....

US chocolate is crap, if all youve ever eaten was made by Hershey, or Mars.

The same applies to beer.
"Budweiser" IS crap....

Ever heard of small local chocolatiers?
Local breweries?

Thats like eating at a Pizza Hut, and saying "American Pizza sucks!", and never eating at an authentic New York Pizzeria, or Chicago one.

I agree there is a huge range of chocolate in every country that varies from divine to pathetic, from expensive to cheap. No one likes Russell Stovers (sp?). Most everyone likes handmade truffles at excellent boutiques (like the one in Oakland I can never remember the name of... sells awesome gelato too? Anyone?)

However, I think there are several mid-range chocolates that are pretty good for their prices. Personally, I have always been partial to See's dark chocolate buttercreams, probably because my father used to be an engineer at the company and brought home boxes of "irregulars"--the candies that don't look pretty enough to sell--to my mom when she was pregnant with me. See's may be a large manufacturer now, but it was small when my dad worked there and they have some really tasty candy for a fairly low price.

Incidentally, while cleaning out a bunch of junk from our office yesterday my dad found a huge binder of original See's recipes he had. It makes you hungry just reading them, especially since the recipes yield huge amounts of candy--750 pounds of butter, anyone? ;)

Among other things I've found nibs to be edible on their own (in smallish quantities), and coarsely ground nibs seem better to brew like coffee than powder.

Dark chocolate is best for eating straight and for fruit-related dipping, but milk chocolate goes better with peanut butter or ice cream.
White chocolate sounds like a good idea (or, at least, a half-decent one), but I've never tasted anything that got it off properly.
