The Sandwich Thread

Hello Lads,

In my present state of hunger combined with the fact that sandwiches are a cheap option for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I would like to pose the question:
What are some of your favorites for a sandwich combination?

Feel free to add as many good sandwiches as you like, as I need some more ideas of what to take to uni. Also if you have good ideas for sides that go with them.

===============
To get the ball rolling, I shall share my current favorite. Discovered it whilst aimlessly scouring Woolies for inspiration the other week.

Bread: 4 seed, but anything particularly grainy is good. Rolls are best, but slices of bread suffice.
fillings:
Ham (a couple of layers of shaved)
Jarlsberg
Semi dried tomatoes
Sides: Ginger beer & mandarins!

Simple, yet incredibly tasty. Advantage is that it doesn't require any fresh vegies - No need to store an entire lettuce/half a tomato. If you are preparing it at home to take to uni, put the semi-fried tomatoes between the cheese and ham, otherwise the bread can get soggyish.

Oh my actual dog: A Lapse thread not involving spamming - unless you count it as a topping on your sandwich... In which case yeah, there is spam involved... But you get that

Grilled peanut butter and jelly. Delicious. I liked grilled ham and swiss, too.

What I really want to try is a Trailer Park Monte Cristo (http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/images/oC/trailer-park-0308-lg.jpg)--battered deep-fried PB&J. Only once, because my heart might stop otherwise. :P

I feel my arteries hardening from just looking at it... it looks good though...

In Australia, PB&J is a weird concept... Infact I don't think I've spoken to anyone that has ever actually had it... (Of course, I did try to make it once as a kid, but due to me not realising American Jelly = Australian Jam, it didn't turn out to well. For us, jelly is your jello... yeah... bad idea...)

nice... I should try that this week actually...

Grilled chicken, sliced pear, and blue cheese ciabatta. You have *no* idea.

Of course, it's not really a "take to school" kind of sandwich. My favourite for that is incredibly simple: turkey breast and mayo with a bag of doritos to put in the sandwich right before I eat it. Otherwise, they lose their crunch.

I'm also a fan of mozzarella, fresh basil, and sliced Roma tomatoes... that one's good cold, or open and toasted, again on ciabatta or something similar. (Mmm, the cheese gets all melted and slightly golden... delicious.)

Or, turkey breast, bacon, lettuce, avocado, and ranch cream cheese spread... sounds random as hell, but it's amazing.

Or roast beef sandwich with dipping broth.

Or... yeah, I really enjoy sandwiches. More often than not they're an at-home sort of meal, though.

Trying to think of some good ones I have done...

There is of course always the classic grilled ham and cheese.

Grilled PBJ.

Peanut butter and bananas goes pretty good together especially with pretzels.

And don't knock it until you try it... I once ate peanut butter and miracle whip.. it was.. different...

The best concoction I ever made was a pretzel roll with bacon, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, and just a dab of ranch dressing. Its wonderful!

chicken salad. You can find chicken on sale, cook it, chunk it, freeze it, make it fresh when you want it.

In the following order from bottom to top.
Ham
American Mustard (Sweet Mustard)
Jarlsberg Cheese
Sauerkraut

It may be best to put the sauerkraut in a container and add it at the end if you are taking it to Uni, as it may go soggy.

Chicken
Lettuce
Avocado
Mayonnaise or a sweet chutney

Alternatively take out the chutney and chicken and add turkey and cranberry sauce.

Roast beef, the rarer the better, with mayo on a roll.

Cappicola, provolone, genoa salami, prociutto, mortadella on a sesame seed semolina hero roll, with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, roasted sweet red peppers and pepperoncini.

Grilled cheese.

Tuna melt (tuna salad on toasted english muffin with slice of american cheese melted over).

Egg salad melt (same, with horseradish added to egg salad to give it a kick).

Hmm. Peanut butter and dill pickles on wheat bread. You have no idea how good that is.

Either that, or tuna salad on wheat.

Chicken, pesto and sun-dried tomato.

Tuna and mayonnaise. Generally in a proper loaf of bread, not sliced bread, which doesn't taste as good.

Lads?! Ok, we know there are no women on the internet.

The following sandwiches are great and vegetarians can eat them (not vegans, though).

1. Two slices of bread of choice, toasted and buttered.
2. A few slices of very thinly sliced cheese, good sharp cheddar being the best option.
3. Some thinly sliced red onion.
4. Avocado slices.
5. A bit of basil or parsley or other fresh herb that you like and goes well with cheese.
6. Some lettuce leaves.

Layer half the cheese on the bottom slice of bread, then layer the onion, avocado, herbs, lettuce and, finally the remaining cheese.

or

1. Slices of good crusty Italian bread
2. Olive oil
3. Fresh, thinly sliced tomato
4. Chiffonade of basil
5. Freshly made, thinly sliced Mozzarella cheese.

Brush the slices of bread lightly with olive oil, layer tomatoes, basil and cheese. Put under the broiler for minute or two, until the cheese bubbles a little.

Try using whole basil leaves on your roast beef sandwiches instead of lettuce.

On sandwich number one, you can add a layer of thinly sliced meat of choice.

Sandwich #1:

Bread: Pumpernickel/Rye Swirl
Meat: Corned Beef
Cheese: Provolone or Swiss
Add lettuce/tomato, onion, whatever
Key Ingredient: Real hot spicy brown mustard

Sandwich #2 (The I have the munchies real bad from smoking something real bad sandwich)

Bread: Whatever is in the house that isn't moldy
Meat: Ham, Turkey, Bologna, and whatever else happens to be in the meat drawer
Cheese: American, Swiss, Provolone, Muenster, and again, whatever else is there
Add: Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, potato chips, and whatever else may sound good with it.
Mustard: Where did I put the mustard, I hate short term memory loss!!!!

Eat, get up because you have cotton mouth and forgot your drink, come back, sit down, get back up because you left the sandwich in the kitchen, come back, vegetate to some guitar hero.

My favorite is:

Roast ham (thin sliced), lettuce, Swiss cheese, red bell pepper, and garlic flavoured mayo. Pretty cheap to make, although, I'm not sure if garlic mayo is available everywhere. If not, I suppose you could try to mix garlic into the mayo yourself, but that is allot of work for a sandwich.

I am not too picky. Any sandwich made with good quality ingredients is fine by me. I will mention one I haven't had in a long time, though. Sardines. MMMMMMmmmmmmmm.

OK another few options for you

Chicken (maybe leftovers from the roast chicken you had last night)
Roast Capsicum
Sun-dried tomatoes
Pesto
and
Walnuts (optional)

Roast Lamb
Mint sauce

And a favorite of mine, espically on cold winter days

Hot Roast Beef
Hot gravy
(this would be placed in a roll rather than in between two pieces of bread but it still works)

Sandwich #1:
Take eggs, milk, cinnamon, and whatever else you may prefer for making French Toast.
Dip the bread in the mixed eggs/milk/&c, as if making French Toast.
Use said bread with some cheese to make a grilled cheese sandwich.

Sandwich #2:
Take a sub roll, and put on it:
Ham
Turkey
Bacon (I sometimes leave this out if I'm too lazy to cook the bacon first.)
Cheddar Cheese
Heat this-- If you have a toaster oven, use that. Otherwise, a microwave is fine.
After the cheese is a little bit melted, add lettuce, mayo, and a bit of oregano. Goes great with a plate of homemade fries.

I have not had that, as I avoid that "restaurant" like the plague, but it is a pretty damn good idea, so I'm not surprised that somebody has done it.

Neither have I, but the general idea seems the same.

I can just not understand the concept. It disgusts/scares me.
