What do you generalites think is the best real tank ever?

And by tank I mean:
An enclosed heavily armed and armored combat vehicle that moves on tracks.

Either the Challenger MkII (Speed and agility) or the Leopard (Slow but extremely powerful) are the best, The Abrams (good all rounder) and the T-90S (incredible engine power) are also alright.

The best tank ever? Wow, in which context? In historic terms I would have to say the old Soviet T-34 as it was simple to operate, yet had some revolutionary concepts (sloped armour), and could be massed produced rapidly. Not to mention the fact it took everything the Germans had to throw at it and emerged victorious. In strictly modern terms of tanks, I would have to divide it between the English Challenger, which has some of the best armour and decent optics as well, the American Abrams with superb optics and the same armour as the challenger, and the German Leopard, which has an excellent suspension and drive system. America never had a truly great tank until the advent of the Abrams.

If you think about it, not everyone will have used a battle tank, for obvious reasons, they are more likely to have come across fictional ones, therefore there's a higher probability of them choosing a fictional one.
Besides the real ones have a tendancy to kill real people, not cool.

A tie between the T-34, the Merkava, and the Baneblade.

The T-34 was a very well-designed tank in its day. It is arguably the best MBT of WWII.

The Baneblade, while fictional, is simply awesome.

The Merkava isn't the mightiest tank of them all, but of all real tanks, if I had to be in a tank unit, I'd want to be in a Merkava. Because Merkavas are designed so the crew can survive even if the Merkava is destroyed.

ah, but it's the psychological value you spend the points, you're opponent is likely spend too much time trying to take it out to notice the rest of your army (as in using it as a decoy or to anchor a flank), and if it does survive the deluge it can give a decent account of itself.

I agree, I would also like to point out that both the sloped armor and high speed suspension of the T-34 were the ideas born in America. Go U.S.A. Too bad we ignored Walter Christie and instead ended up with arguably the worst tank of WW2.

I would also like to point out that M1 - Abrahms are also designed to save the life of the crew if the tank is hit. It has armor panels that can explode outward but not inward and its engine is designed to fall out the back of the tank so that it can't hurt the crew.

But anywho, aren't tanks going to be a thing of the past soon? I heard that between light armored vehicles and attack modern air support, the tank has no place anymore.

Bullet magnets are all well and good, really. I've admittedly not had the chance to rely deploy them, since the biggest piece of kit I've got is a Vanquisher - which recently got knocked out in the first turn against the Tau army we bought a mate for his birthday.

If, and only if, you fit the M1A2 with the new Rheinmetall gun, then it's hands-down the best MBT available. Without the gun, then it's roughly comparable to the Leopard and Challenger II. Although, I think we might be overlooking the Merkava, which is a superb tank when used properly.

ah i understand, no matter it'd be fun to have is all. yeah guard can be tricky to play, it certainly helped me with learning tactics due to their general weakness in combat, then again i played against Chaos and Space marines who both have wayy better damage soaking abilities.

Personally I'd like to see the adoption of Rheinmetall's 140mm...

My main concern would be the space limitations that the 140mm shell would wind up giving tank crews. In theory, for every seven shells, you could fit one more if you stick with the 120mm. Admittedly, in the way Western tanks are being used lately, that's not a big deal, but it's still a bit of a limitation.

as much as I don't want to, I've gotta say its the M1A2 for literally being great in all required fields) but following very close behind is the German Leopard as I do believe to date, its the only alternate tank type (as in not M1A2) to best an M1A2 in a mock combat situation.
