This is probably why hawks leave the feet and head of their prey. So their prey can't claw their way out.

They do. Take a look at the hawk and the size of the leg. There's no way a whole bird could fit through its beak unless it's somehow gained the ability to unhinge it. I just can't see how it could eat the thing whole.
