Tech help?

Hey NSG, I was wondering if someone who is technically qualified could review the specs for the computer I want to put together. I am ordering all the parts from newegg.com (because it rocks). What I want to make sure is that everything is compatible, and nothing is a ridiculous waste of money in general. I'm not starting from square one, and I've checked, and rechecked all the specs, but I would like a second opinion from someone who probably knows more than me, I'd rather not throw money away where I know I'm not an expert. Thanks for advice/assistance!

You'll want a more powerful power supply, the newer Geforces like to be guaranteed power.

Well thats a start, and probably a pretty crucial one, lol, thanks!

I'm not techy enough to help you with the rest of the stuff, and I don't remember where I found the power supply requirements for the newer GeForces, but if I remember correctly the 8800 'needed' a minimum of 600W, so barring better info from somebody I'd figure probably an 800W.

Ehhh they were not quite that high but I would have shot for a 500 with the other specs ... I am running a lot more hardware then that (including the 8800) with a 700

AS for my recomdendations the power supply 500 watt or better ... I would also take a look at the Hans G monitor I have heard some bad experiences with them

the OCZ ram also has been problematic for me and some friends but not the worst at all

I would like to see a MOBO and case choice as well as they are often crucial decisions

The last time I looked at them was when I put my computer together, and that was a couple of years ago.

Also, my understanding of the powersupply requirements was just that that is what the card wants (might have issues without it), not that the card actually draws that much power. In other words if say the requirement is 600W than as long as you don't have a ridiculous amount of other hardware with high energy demands then you can probably get away with a 600W powersupply.

I reiterate though, try and find out what kind of minmum powersupply is 'required' for the 9600GT.

EVGA is recommending 400 WATTS as well as Newegg for the 9600GT

Like I said I am running an 8800 which is a bit heavier and a lot more hardware (2 Opteron Procs ... 7 Hard drives the 8800's as well as 3 optical and external USB powered drives) with no problems when I was at 500 much less the 700 I am at now

I have not seen any recomendations for the card being higher then that specially with a single 65 Watt CPU single optical and single hard drive

A good test would be to run through this
http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
Fairly comprehensive power supply calculator

Edit: Just ran mine with all the crap on it I come in just short of 500 watt recommendation ... I like the margin of error I have but he would easily do with 500

I did say right at the outset that I wasn't sure.

That's what I figured, that plus I knew it wouldn't be very long before at least one person with more tech knowledge than me popped into the thread. I'm competent enough to assemble a computer, but when it comes to what's to go into it I ask one of my friends to review the list, rather like DT did here.

When you have a few hundred under your belt you get used to it ;)

Considering how long I hold onto my computers, I'm not going to live long enough to do a couple hundred... :(

Used to build them on the side to pay for school ... lots of custom stuff for odd situations depending.

Go you. Kind of figured with having built a couple hundred that you probably weren't just building your own.

Last I knew there was a MOBO on there (which, perhaps comically, is one of the areas that I'm the most concerned about, after all, everything else plugs into it!). Can you make any recommendations for a decent MOBO? I'm cheap (not that I want really low quality either, I want something very cost-effective).

I can re-go through and look at RAM, no reason to need OCZ, I can get seom Kensington, which is what I've gotten every other time I got RAM, they're usually pretty cheap.

As for the monitor, I kinda just threw that on there for the rough price, my fiancee seems like she wants to keep it (whole package) at or under 1,000 and I'm trying to respect that, but I will definitly re-eval. monitors too then.

As for the case, I was going to buy something off eBay (you know, one of those alienware clones/other fairly cheap ones). I hadn't picked on out definitively, but I would be careful, as a review for the Vid card said it was a little long.

Any advice you can give as to changes, (aside form power supply, lol) would be terrific, or just general extra parts or whatnot.

Also, thanks for all the help so far rendered, like I said, every hint I can get the better, lol.

I still dont see the MOBO on the listings but while I am not a big intell fan I am a big ASUS fan

I have had some friends with great luck with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131030 as long as you are not doing raid and is a fairly good price

No, no MOBO was on there... but I know that at some point I had one on there, I must've taken it off.

This comp has gone through substantial changes since about 6 months ago when I started planning it, lol.

EDIT: Also, now that I've looked at it, it is a pretty good price, especially if it comes recommended!

The motherboard is important. Also, don't forget to check the chipset's rating (on internet). It's too often forgotten that it affects your computer performance as a whole.

Yeah I was looking at a middle range one ... if you can afford more Asus makes some nice boards with some nice features higher up :)

Personally I have long running dealings with most manufactures out there, and have got to see how all of them held up over time and feature sets ... I lean ASUS now for 9/10 of the time

Alright, well, I will be posting an updated pdf with the new stuff in it (included is a case, for your scrutiny!), as well as an upgraded power supply, I dropped the monitor... and thats all I cna think of at the moment, and one thing I wanted to check was; What do you guys think of this vid. card? Good deal, or not so much? Decent, or a bit of a piece of crap? Vid. Card (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16814130328).

The total 'wishlist' .pdf is here:
Right here. (http://www.mediafire.com/?dmwz8g4w4nm)

Any input (constructive, or destructive) again, is always welcome!

I like the Vid card for mid dend systems, it has a good price point for the performance.

The case also looks alright to me, make sure it is not one of thoes that has like 7 fan spots but only shipps with one, not a big deal if you know about it and order the extra fans but can be a pain in the ass sometimes

Lol, it has three fan spots, and I think it said it came with three LED fans, but they would probably be blue LEDs (because everyone an their cousin thinks that blue is the only LED colour for a computer), and the idea is so cliche to me at this point that, though I wanted LED fans, I would refuse to get blue, me and m fiancee settled on red, which will look pretty bad a-- when the comp is on, and the lights are off.

Of course I have three lights on the wishlist too, so that should be taken care of.

And thanks for all the advice! It's been very helpful.
