WOW!! Looks like the Art History books have to be rewritten. A great discovery indeed in my humble opinion.

Cool, I'm really glad the Taliban did not get the chance to destroy these unique works of art. The Westren invasion wasn't all that bad ;)

This was in the Guardian yesterday. Fascinating, although not wholly unexpected.

Until 2001, two colossal 6th-century statues of Buddhas stood at the mouth of the caves.
Inside the caves, scientists found murals painted in the 7th century.
sounds like it was bloody kids if you ask me

Very nifty...a bit of history we've all been oblivious too, and now, new knowledge!

Indeed. It is a good find. Maybe they should open it up for tourists. That will bring in much needed money.

It doesn't matter, it seems to register as profit in any country finding it.
Does this mean i should dislike oil or the people looking for it?

Nobody sane is arguing that the Afghan invasion was uncalled for. The Taliban frankly needed to be put out to pasture and shot. Problem was, a certain brilliant tactician decided to shift attention to Iraq before the job in Afghanistan was completely finished.
Now, aside from that they had better protect those paintings since the Taliban was given a chance to recover from the brink of extinction and they might go after them as part of their terror campaign.

No, no you shouldn't but a distinction should be made before we start bombing every pile of rubble in search of oil. After all, we can only really use one for energy. *nods*

So the Taliban blew up the statues... But didn't bother walking inside to see the "Heretic" paintings.
Guess that was some dumb luck.

Maybe they did. In the picture in the OP article it does look like the faces of the paintings have been hacked off.

It was a response to the implied "See? If you leftists had stopped the invasion of Afghanistan we would have lost this too!" statement.
