An Illinois Congressional candidate attended a celebration of Hitlers birthday put on by the National Socialist Workers Party, complete with swastikas. He then proceeded to claim the he had no idea what, exactly, he was celebrating. There's pictures, too.

And yet, he's trying to convince people that they should vote for him. He's a candidate for an elected position who made a really, really dumb campaign stop. And that doesn't excuse his colossal ignorance of the history of the Nazi party and symbolism.

It might seem like a dumb campaign stop to you, but I'm sure there are people who it would appeal to.

How did you get the idea he was ignorant? From my point of view, there is a limit to the length of time which we can continue to persecute people for an incident. The modern day Nazis were not the people that killed jews, rather they are two generations later. I'd be fairly convinced that they don't intend to kill any jews.

So, how do you expect a candidate to go and find out what people want from their member if he is not allowed to see them? Should he also avoid seeing anyone from southern states because the Southern states condoned slavery however many years ago?

So, to make that a bit clearer if it didn't come out right:
1. The modern day nazis probably do not intend to kill any jews. I also doubt that any of the current members have ever killed a jew.
2. The candidate was probably just finding out what different subsections of society want from him should he be succesful in winning the position.
3. If you are getting angry at him for visiting one group that has a history of been involved in serious depravation of liberty and mass murder, you are going to have to get angry at him for visiting anyone in modern day America. (for slavery etc...)

Okay, dude(ette), you need to take a deep breath and read what I posted again. I said NOTHING about killing jews. I said that this guy is an ignorant dumbfuck who doesn't know that National Socialist Workers Party = Nazi. Not to mention that the modern American Nazi party is made up of a bunch of white supremacists. But that's okay with you?

And I'm not angry, just disappointed that this moron can't figure out what the fuck a swastika means.

Possibly due to him not knowing who the nazis were ?

They just celebrate the birthday of the man that did, sit under a huge portrait of him, wearing the clothes of the murderers, their insignia and uttering the rhetoric.
They might not wish to kill any Jews (or gays, gypsies and so on...) themselves, but they definitely glorify the actual killers.

Swastikas have been important religious symbols in Asia and among the Native Americans since long before Germany was a unified nation. Even today, Japanese maps will use swastikas (turned differently, but still swastikas) to indicate Buddhist temples.

The problem is that Hitler and the Nazis co-opted the swastika as their symbol, and as a result, it is seen by Western eyes as a symbol of hate and genocide.

And yes, Zirkle is a freaking idiot. I mean, come on, no one except no one is that dense.

Don't try and take my comments out of context and twist the words.

I have never had any contact with any practicing american nazis... for that matter any practicing nazis at all... So, I plead ignorance on that fact... I do not agree with it, but people are allowed their opinions.

My point still stands though, that his presence at this event should not be taken to mean he hates [insert group here]. He is a politician, and politicians will kiss any ass for another vote. Everyone in society matters, and it is important that everyone has input into their country - Regardless of how predjudiced we may think their viewpoints.

A very narrow slice, yes.

How did you get the idea he was ignorant?

Hmmm...

ig·no·rant /ˈɪgnərənt/
–adjective
1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ignorant

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn't know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it.

That sounds to me rather like the very definition of the word. If someone in this day and age does not know

It's not even remotely a problem unless they poll in double figures.
