Happy Dragon slaying day fellow Englishmen

So today is St Georges day, I for one didn't know about it until today, and my first thought was, meh.

I have never known us English to celebrate today, not in my 40 years of existance. I wonder why, are we just an unpatriotic bunch?

In Sheffield they had some morris dancing and some sword dancing under some giants over the weekend to celebrate "more or less St George's day" :)

Which was fairly cool. Though the lord mayor was there and he looked as if he would rather be anywhere else.

I don't think it is lack of patriotism. I'm not sure if there was ever much of a tradition. And of course nowadays the day, the flag and the livery have largely been allowed to be co-opted by the far right. Which probably increases the uncomfortableness.

Though I find it interesting that our PM has ordered the George cross to be flown.

It doesn't have a large enough association with alcohol.

Plus the past hijacking of it by the nationalists (who were fine with having a patron saint from Turkey(?) )

Though I find it interesting that our PM has ordered the George cross to be flown.

To be more precise he has ordered that on Saints days for England, Scotland and Wales that on government buildings with two flag poles fly the relevant national flag as well as the Union Jack. An important distinction I feel.

Personally I feel why not? I don't think that it's something we *must* do. But there's nothing wrong with it and it could be nice to build some associations with the English flag other than football and the BNP.

Although, it does involve Morris dancing and I'm not certain that should be encouraged.

Ah, watching Truro play at wembley was fun. The night before, a load of us had gone up on a coach and stayed on the Heathrow strip at a rather nice hotel (Heathrow side, right infront of one of the runways and not a travel lodge type thing.)

We went to a nearby pub and the women were loving our accents. Its good to be cornish but remember, we do not sound like The Wurzzles down here, thats Sommerset (like the guy on timeteam!)

I always thought that Saint Georges Day was something that was recognized in England, not as much as bigger days such as Guy Fawkes Day, but something which people might remember or wear something on their jacket, like the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt (but I suppose you don't celebrate that either).

Yeah, but (and this is weird coming from someone who loves and respects archaeology) there’s something about the sight of Tony Robinson bounding about a field, waving his arms madly as he describes what little evidence of anything the team have found that weekend, that warms the cockles of me heart.

And to give credit where it’s due, Time Team will often get access to sites where the National Trust/Historic Scotland don’t have permission and/or the funds to investigate. Plus, the digs are usually handed over to ‘proper’ archaeologists once the show is over.

I guess I meant his enthusiasm was Baldrickesque..in that he very much loves bounding hither and tither but drops some of the classiest clangers...especially in the early days of the show.

All in all its kudos to C4 for doing it...if it helps get people interested in history and archeology then I don't think it can argued against.

I find myself in two minds concerning Time Team. I agree that academically, it makes a mockery of genuine archaeology whilst invariably accomplishing little in the time allotted, however, the genuine, sincere enthusiasm with which they conduct digs and report finds is warming. More so given the trend towards functionality in education, and the concomitant disdain for genuine academic interest.

Equally, I still think Tony Robinson should be sent to a Thatcherite "re-education" camp....:D
