How do you think you get to heaven?

I think if blind submission is what it takes to get into Heaven then Heaven should rightfully called a concentration camp, a place where this omniscience entity constantly watches his subjects under surveillance and you are doomed to an eternity of praising this God which you did not elect and has absolute despotic power.

My opinion, assuming of course that there even is a heaven, is that if you live your life trying to follow the teachings of Jesus then you will get into heaven.

But then, I don't believe in the concept of heaven and hell, so...

I feel that one's afterlife is decided by deed and not by birthright or by arbitrary membership: Those who feel that they are somehow "elect" or that anyone who disagrees with them or follows another path is damned to hell are right up there on my shitlist.

It's all karma to me: A kind, honest, loyal, humble, diligent, decent human being, who does it for the sake of just being a good person has more of a place in heaven than any theist who feels that Heaven is his or hers by right.

You must repent of your sins, believe in Jesus Christ and trust in Him alone for your salvation.

Then you are taken to heaven. You don't "get" there.

EDIT: I was being careless. You are only allowed into heaven because you are forgiven because Christ paid the penalty for sin. When you believe, repent and trust in Him alone, you are forgiven your sins and Christ's righteousness is counted as yours. When all this happens, you are taken to heaven spiritually at death and bodily at the last judgement.

Other: You have to be forgiven.

Close to the "You have to believe that Jesus paid the price for your sins." except you can seek peace with your conscience even if you don't understand that it is thanks to Jesus and not thanks to your own achievements that you are forgiven and get to heaven.

/agree! Here's a zen story to illustrate the point:
The Gates of Paradise

A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and asked: "Is there really a paradise and a hell?"

"Who are you?" inquired Hakuin.

"I am a samurai," the warrior replied.

"You, a soldier!" exclaimed Hakuin. "What kind of ruler would have you as his guard? Your face looks like that of a beggar."

Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but Hakuin continued: "So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably much too dull to cut off my head."

As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked: "Here open the gates of hell!"

At these words the samurai, perceiving the master's discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed.

"Here open the gates of paradise," said Hakuin.

I think you just have to be a good person in your heart, and want the best for everyone without being judgemental of everyone else and how they lead their lives, and if you fuck up you should be okay as long as you are truly sorry for it and try to be better -after all God made the platypus, right?

That is if I were to steer my hazy beliefs into an almost Christian, Heaven directed manner.

I think everyone can enter a peaceful, renewed, conscious heaven when they pass from their current lives. I think some who leave the world with hate will create a hell for themselves, but they can pull themselves out of hell by abandoning their hate. The view is somewhat Christian centered, because I do acknowledge Jesus, but I believe that we are all part of the same divine God and can one day return to it.

Universalism was actually quite common in early age Christianity. I also put a lot of value in Gnostic Christianity, which I think has a good way of explaining the nature of things.

i dont think it's to do with your religion. if your a good person, u know do good deed's- help to inprove the lifes of others.

follow the actions that religions want- sacrifice your needs for others, love one another, treat peolpe like peolpe, and all the stuff that is suposed to be done naturaly in any good socity then you are following Gods path even if you have a diffrnt name for it.

its not about belif- you can be raised to think- look after your self first, but if you are living on the street keeping your self alive then you share you cold can of beans with som1 else just becuz you have a need not to be alone, then your loving your nabour.

your religion isnt wat matters- muslims teach respect for other, christians help one another- your both doing what is right for the sake of doing what is right.

even the poor old athists have a good chance- a athist can see a CAFOD advert or red nose day show and think "thats not right, genetily their the same as me, and science proves your suposed to help your speices survive, their for i must encoage others to help the poor and to develop africa"

that athist is doing gods will and dosnt know it, he can work as a misonairy catch a plage, die, go to the gates of heaven and stare in dis-belife all he wants he he has still made it.

heaven is for all who seek meaning in life not a exclucive club for the rich and powerful.

We will never find a conclusive answer to this question in our lifetime, so I think that it's not worth worrying about.

In short, I'd say that a good rule would be to try not to be a dick to other people. That way, even if it doesn't get you into heaven, at least you won't spoil the fun for everyone else. Faith in Jesus and/or God doesn't hurt either.

I'm a fairly religious Christian, by the way.

To late, you started a religious thread therefore it will, nay MUST, devolve into a Atheism vs. Theism debate. Also, aside from your one Atheist option, you failed to put up any non-Christian options. In many non-Abrahamic religions there isn't a heaven to go to, you either go somewhere else entirely or reincarnate.

Okay, hypothetically if I believed in Christianity, I think in order to "go to heaven" you don't just need to have faith: you need to live your life as a good person. This doesn't mean not having sex before your married, or not getting tattoos, or not drinking or smoking, or being a total goodie-goodie. This simply means that you should always to do good for people. You certainly shouldn't go to heaven if you're Christian but you kill/murder/steal/lie/hurt/rape or go into countries as a "missionary" and force your beliefs onto people in poverty instead of providing food and shelter. Religion, essentially, should be about being a good person. If you are a good person, you should go to heaven.

Personally I feel it's more a case of what you don't do. Provided you havn't caused grief in your life I don't think your going to be punished harshly. By grief I don't mean stealing candy from the shop when you were 5 years old and feeling guilty about it. I think in terms of serious disruption to the order of things, more along the lines of Pol Pot/Stalin/Hitler/Jim Carrey.

By properly pleasing the deity-in-charge of bookings. Most religions have instructions on how to do this.

For example, I am working on plans for a huge 'taco-amid' for The Most Muddy Lunatic Goofballs. It won't be like the ancient egyptians pyramids, gigantic tombs for the pharoah. It'll just be for him to eat.

I don't think I even believe in Happiness (as a single state without contrast to some other state of Unhappiness) so the concept of Perfect Happiness For Ever doesn't make any sense to me.

The "for ever" bit is so wrong it makes me quite suspicious. I get that feeling I'm being lied to.

I mean, if God was a drug-dealer and I was trying to buy a bag of Happiness off them, and they said "for just another twenty bucks you can have a bag of Happiness which will never run out" I would be just a bit o_0 ...

heavin and hell are the same place and everyone goes there no matter what they do or don't. what its like for them, what they experience there, depends on their perspective and how they've made themselves to be.

interaction with a perfectly just, or even noncritical environment, but one which cannot be altered by arts of coerciveness to favor those who practice them and become skilled in doing so, as our world we mundanely live in here has been, is equally hell to fanatics of every stripe, while being heavin to everyone honest and intending no harm to anyone else. i mean intrinsically, without having to be two different "places" at all in order to do so!

this would COULD be that kind of a heavin too. we only need to stop coercing each other into trying to impress each other.

that's the message of every belief too. the one that religeous institution then try to obscure, for even THEIR own vested intrests. there is no fanatacism that is not a perversion of something.
