If you could travel back to the dawn of man, what part of the world would you choose to start your own nation?
North America plus Greenland and the Carribean. Natural resources FTW.
The United States but Annexing Mexico as well. (Natural oil resources and warm climate)

Probably some place close to the ocean, with a major river, lots of fertile land and natural resources, a mild climate and optimal protection from various natural disasters - so I'd stay away from the Carribean and the Pacific Rim. Probably Italy around the Tiber River near Rome

The coast of China would be pretty good, but I would also have to go with Italy.

I would say greece because of the nice weather and the amount of fishing. I could also expand with ease through the Med. Sea.
In fact, I think i'll just go for the whole new world, then maybe move on through Japan to the old world.
I don't know how climate was at the dawn of man, but I would prefer a moderate/warm climate with fertile soil, preferably close to sea, an island would be nice too but it should be large enough to sustain your population of course.
If you don't mind me asking: what exactly is the purpose of this and what can we expect in the following parts, and why is there no poll?

I'd have a problem with an island in that I'd want my people to expand, I suppose they'd naturally build boats but, for me, an island is too enclosed and too susceptible to disease. I can see a ton of 'buts' to my point however...
I'd have it start where it started.

On the other hand it's also safer against invasion, and there is something about islands that makes them automatically 2x as exotic
Western Europe.
Even if you could travel back in time, unless you had created a way of staying alive indefinitely, you're only going to be around a maximum of 50 years (or less... no medicine, lots of predators), so I'd just spend the time travelling east, trying to get up small nations along the way.
Argentina or Venezuela, plenty of resources, nice climates, both have coasts, I favor Venezuela slightly because of the oil, not that it would matter at the dawn of man, so it would prolly come down to the flip of a coin.

Sardinia. Being Mediterranean and an island are two pluses. It has obsidian which was one of the most important trade goods during the stone age. The oldest grapes that have been found where also found on Sardinia.

True but another option is to focus on a fleet to get rich on controlling trade routes. Perhaps in an alliance with the other islands to be strong enough to make big expansive empires stay on land.
What does the thread title "DEMOCRACY: Part 1" have to do with the question "Where would you start an ancient nation?"?
England, since it has plenty of natural resources, including plenty of opportunities for maritime activities, and the sea makes a nice buffer against attackers.

the place where the dawn of man took place...kinda hard to start a nation without people.
I'd take the Americas. And Asia, Australasia, and Europe.
And Africa, for good measure.
Hell, I'll just take the Earth.

That's why it's the "dawn of man" and not the "night before the dawn of man";)
To clarify, this is a fledgling tribe of about a hundred people. They are on the verge of becoming a stone age culture so resources such as oil and gold do not have value.
As for the different starting points you've suggested, I like Rome, Greece, Sardinia, the Coast of China, Venezuela and Mexico. Although I'm surprised no one has thought of Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) which is the cradle of Western Civilization, or Egypt.
