Lost Cities.

I've recently discovered something about myself. I love the stories and thoughts of Lost Cities such as Troy(who's ruins were later found) Carthage, Karakorum and so on and so forth. It amazes me how these once great cities fall to become nothing more than ruins.

So do you have a favourite lost city and do you believe any of todays major world cities will eventually become lost cities (due to war, climate change, mass migration etc)?

Atlantis

I love the whole mystery of Atlantis. Did it exist or was it from the imagination of Plato? Afterall there are no other accounts of a place named Atlantis before Plato's mention.

Venice is the most prominent candidate at the moment.

Yeah the sinking of Venice, though some now claim that Venice is now longer sinking, however plans are still in motion to protect the city from further submersion.

What's that town that was evacuated after the coal mine caught fire and made the ground boil? I like that one. It's a modern-day lost city I guess, in the sense of 'lost' as synonymous with 'irretrievable.'

Centralia, PA.

I personally like Timbuktu; it's still inhabited, but in its heyday it was one of the wealthiest cities on Earth, heavily populated and boasting a diverse culture and was a center of Islamic learning almost unrivaled in the rest of the Islamic world. Unfortunately, its location and centuries of economic decline and warfare have erased this legacy, leaving a far less impressive place in its wake.

Many theorize that New Orleans will be abandoned eventually. I doubt that the city will ever fully recover from Katrina.

Naples is at risk of becoming a lost city. If Vesuvius erupts big time, Naples might go the way of Montserrat - covered in ash and abandoned.

On the other end of the spectrum, I reckon that New York will be around for a long time. Even if the city suffered a disaster that forced temporary evacuation (like a nuclear strike, or the Cloverfield monster), New York has such a strong cultural identity that it would be rebuilt eventually. You'd have to not only destroy the city, but kill every current and former inhabitant.

Atlantis

It's been found, or, at any rate, the factual basis for the myth has been contended as being an island at the eastern tip of Cyprus, if memory serves, submerged when the Atlantic Ocean breached the Pillars of Herakles.

Dunwich has to be one of my favourite Lost Cities - the beginning of the end came with a 1286 storm surge.

In terms of possible modern lost cities, I think it is likely that New Orleans may eventually become abandoned; similarly with Venice if it continues sinking. Along the Naples line, Auckland is at similar risk of becoming a lost city if a volcano erupts there as well.

In terms of New York, it runs the risk of being worst effected if global warming occurs - Manhattan Island isn't that high above sea level, and neither is much of the city. London is also at similar risk, given that the area is sinking.

That's a lot of work as you would have to circle most of the city. Remember, the Meadowlands are biult in a swamp that's about 6 inches above sea level. And you'd have to close off L.I. Sound, and find a way to pump the entire Hudson River's flow up into a higher ocean.

Favorite: Chichen Itza.

Good to see Macchu Pichu mentioned, but my favorite lost city would be Vilcabamba, also in Peru. Founded by Manco Inca Yupanqui in the aftermath of the Spanish conquest of Peru, it was eventually conquered during the reign of Tupac Amaru, who was brought to Cuzco, and executed. Wikipedia states that the location of Vilcabamba is quite certainly known, although when I studied these things in college (some years ago!), its location was very much a mystery.

Hopefully, the information that beautiful Venice is no longer sinking is correct; but if not, la serenisima would be my candidate for a future lost city.

The salted farmland is probably myth, or at the very least poetic license. As for a Roman colony on the ruins of Carthage, that's documented (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carthage#Roman_Carthage).

I'm not saying it's impossible to salt farmland. But the Romans, particularly in the early Republic, often refounded and resettled the cities they conquered. Carthage was no exception, so salting the farms seems an unlikely and counterproductive tactic.

Ahh yes you would be right in assuming this for a normal situation. However the Romans had enough of Carthage and hated her so. So they razed the city with a vengeance and put that salt spike in her agricultural heart. It was out of sheer anger.

Meh. Roman history is full of literary license. Polybius' reputation notwithstanding, I don't take anything the contemporary historians wrote at face value. Whatever the Romans felt about Carthage, salting the farmlands strikes me as too grandiose and irrational to be truth.

I don´t have as much a favorite lost city as I have lost civilizations, like the Etruscans. I sometimes pull my hair in art history classes just trying to understand what happened to them? Were they completely assimilated by the Romans or were they exterminated by them?

When it comes to your last question, I believe that cities like New York, LA and London will be lost to future generations due to severe climate changes. But that, eventually, they´ll be found like Pompeii and Carthage.

The history between Rome and Carthage is an interesting one. According to legend Carthage was founded by the survivors of Troy and ruled by a queen. she got into a fight with her husband and he left, taking many people with him; the two city's rivalry began hundreds maybe thousands of years before the Palapineasion (I know I butchered it) Wars.

I'm not to sure on the Etruscians but I beleive that it was likely that the Romans finally conquered them through culture.

Your list has "Rome" in there. Rome is called the Eternal City for a reason; it has 2700 years or so of continuous occupation. I'm not sure that your list is accurate as a list of lost cities.

Rome is still very much alive.. in fact it has been there since its founding and doesn't look to be going anywhere soon.

i am also fond of the anasazi cliff dwellers. the desire to live in the clefts in high canyon walls only accessible by ladder or climbing down the sheer cliff face is hard to understand.

Roman soldiers were payed in salt, i don't think it would have been efficeint to salt all the useable farmland in Carthaginia, considering Carthage was largely trade based.

My response is to read up on the relationship between Carthage and Rome. You will find the destruction and salting story in dozens of websites.

Chernobyl is probably the most recent example of a lost city. At least as much as I can recall.
No Chernobyl ironicly still has squatters and people living there, some of the former owners and stuff.

The real abandoned city you are talking about is Prypiat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prypiat%2C_Ukraine).

And if you want to see how "Lost" it has become...

Look at their football (Soccer) stadiumfield (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/304/2067_3.jpg).

Something else:before (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/312/1864_3.jpg)and after (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/304/922_3.jpg)

The 'Friendship of Peoples' Monument before (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/312/1856_3.jpg) and after (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/304/955_3.jpg).

The Hospital Before (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/312/2174_3.jpg) and After (http://pripyat.com//sm/site/photogallery/uploads/304/923_3.jpg).

Creepy ain't it?

Another 40 years and it WILL be lost. It seems modern buildings fall apart and vanish much easier than olden day ruins.

I guess since it's made of wood and metal.

I watched in that "Earth after Us". It seems the only thing that would remain of New York after + 1000 years would be the bottom of the Statue of Liberty and not much else.

Rome and Jerusalem are not lost cities. I've been to both. They're alive. Trust me.

Also Jericho, Alexandria, Sparta, Beersheba, and Tiberias are still alive.

The ancient abandoned cities of the pre-Columbian American cities are rather fascinating. Pueblo Bonito and Tikal are good examples.

And when we're talking about mythological lost cities, what about Sodom and Gomorrha?

It's been found, or, at any rate, the factual basis for the myth has been contended as being an island at the eastern tip of Cyprus, if memory serves, submerged when the Atlantic Ocean breached the Pillars of Herakles.
considering the last time that happened was 5.4 million years ago (http://www.semp.us/publications/biot_reader.php?BiotID=350), one has to admire Plato for his research skills in being able to describe events that occurred 5.4 million years before he was born.

However, there are theories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_deluge_theory) about the flooding of the Black Sea around 5600BC which might be basis for Flood mythologies and, as well, Alantis. This (5600BC) is still a good 5000+ years before Plato's time though, so still very unlikely.
But even more likely is the tsunami caused by the Thera eruption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thera_eruption) around 1630BC which basically destroyed the Minoan civilisation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_civilization)- a highly advanced and regarded civilisation for that time. As this was just over 1000 years before Plato, and close to where he lived, it's probably the more likely of the three.
