I didn't pull the trigger, Your Honor!

It seems that while trying to shave the precious milliseconds off the reaction time, DARPA might (someday) give the soldiers an excuse to shoot anyone in the warzone and avoid the responsibility for war crime. Not that it's its stated intention, mind you...

"A new generation of military technology interfaces directly with the brain to target and trigger weapons before our conscious mind is fully engaged. [...] Causing something dreadful to happen without any intent or knowledge is considered an accident and not a crime."

I file this under "cool!"

I want to see fighter pilots just sitting in the cockpit, not touching the controls, just thinking about flying and firing.

Your thoughts betray you, young Skywalker.

Law almost never depends on science. If it did, John Edwards could have never made as much money suing doctors as he did. I'm sure there's an easy way to address this.

I'm with Rambhutan on this, lots of officers would get it. Lots of younger soldiers would probably get it from their senior nco's, too. http://assets.jolt.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/sniper.gif

Or with the magic of satellites, they could pilot from the comfort of their own homes!

Less cool, somehow. I'm just picturing some overweight guy in a tank top and ridiculous boxer shorts with this gigantic helmet, and he's the fighter pilot.

Takes some of the coolness factor out of it.

If they don't make the soldier responsible for shooting, they will make the dop responsible for admission of non-distinguishing war material on a battle field.
Not that that ever had stopped them from i.g. throwing cluster bombs.

You know, most fighter pilots that I know are short guys with bald spots. I just don't recall many that look like Hollywood actors.

Oh that's easily explained. Short = can pull higher G's. And bald spots = ummm... high testosterone = aggressive attitude. ;)

In any case, you're right there.

The interesting part about that picture is that it's apparently in an office. I've got an identical phone sitting on my desk. Not the sort of thing you'd use at home.
