I'm generally more on the power, speed and epic side of metal. Could you point out some black metal band you like? I'm interested.

Interesting, if you slow down the speed and turn up the pitch it's essentially Aqua's Barbie Girl.

Yay for finding some people with good music taste whilst looking at the forum for the very first time. =)

I'm not a huge black metal fan, I personally prefer thrash, death and groove metal but I really like Sodom, Immortal, Darkthrone, (some) Mayhem and Behemoth and recently discovered a really awesome Australian black metal band called the Furor, they're amazing live and have a great drummer who also is the vocalist. I recommend them.

I'm more of a fan of the symphonic stuff, Bal-sagoth, Older Cradle, pretty much older everything, it seems the newer it gets the badder it sounds, best symphonic black metal band ever is Tvangeste, but Behemoth is a murderous ban as well (Not symphonic but I Love fusion genres) as well as most first wave bands, though not all of this second wave is totally shit.

Can't say I have ever heard any, though if it has a tune you can hum and you can dance a moderate foxtrot to it it can't be all bad.

For a while I liked Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Brogir, Fintröll and Celtic Frost. I've mellowed considerably since and I've turned to Alternative, JRock, JPop and Ethnic.:p

I still like Deathklok (Metalocalypse). Does that count?:D

I don't like it. What exactly sets out Black metal from other types of metal? They all sound rather similar to me (because I don't listen to metal probably)

Its mostly the lyrics, while not limited to black metal it has the most "Ungodly" sound, it's mostly totally "evil" but there are actully god worshiping black metal bands (See white metal), I mean the instrumental sounds is different from other forms of metal but it really is only recognized by what is said in the lyrics.

BM has harsh raspy vocals instead of grunts, a much greater atmosphere, entrancing repetitiveness and a generally greater musicianship (though the bad sound quality does not redeem this).

Going through my collection, any of these (mainly first wave) are worth a listen:

1349, Ancient, Arcturus (early), Bathory (first six albums), Beherit, Burzum, Darkthrone, Dissection, Emperor (before they progged up), Enslaved, Gehenna, Gorgoroth, Graveland, Immortal, Keep of Kalessin, Mayhem (early), Mercyful Fate, Moonblood, (Nargaroth :P), Samael, Satyricon (early), Summoning, Ulver (early).

I'm more of a power/symphonic/epic metal guy, myself, but the radio show I was on for most of this year, before I moved to doing an hour of power metal played a lot of Black Metal and Melodic Death, so I certainly know the genre passably. I don't like it, but I know it.

As to the difference between Black Metal and other Metal: The first is that Black Metal uses a minor/harmonic-minor key set almost exclusively (Yes, Arch Enemy fans, there are exceptions.), it's vocals are screamed, rather than bellowed, grunted, or sung, and it's lyrics are "evil", where "evil" is whatever pretentious anti-christian or "anti-society" nonsense is considered most "morally depraved" by the band in question.

Not particularly. I mean, aside from the fact that they're pretty much much of a muchness when it comes to metal shows, the only difference is that I've never felt that I was in danger of being beheaded by the mic-stand at a non-black metal show.

this is true for all metal. whereas in rap/hip hop you have idiots arguing over who's a true gangsta, yo...in metal, you have idiots arguing over what is "true" metal. usually, true metal happens to be said person's favorite genre, but alas.

I like many aspects of Black Metal, but I just don't enjoy the music that much. It's the vocals, I think.

Ulver's Black Metal Trilogie is great, though.

Bathory is pretty much just Quorthon, (whose real name was Ace Thomas Forsberg). He died after releasing Nordland II.

The sound differs greatly from album to album, so go for Nordland I and II or Blood on Ice for a more folk inspired sound, or Under the Sign of the Black Mark or the self titled album, Bathory, for a harsher black metal sound.

Black metal isn't for most people. It took me about two years of listening to other kinds of metal, namely power metal and later folk metal, to eventually be able to tolerate black metal, and even longer for me to develop a sense for it.

Now I like it, but only if the production quality is there. As 'grim' or 'kvlt' as Ulver's 'The Madrigal of the Night' may be, or Darkthrone's 'Under a Funeral Moon', I just can't listen to it without good sound.

Meh, it's got its good points, but I couldn't say I'm a particular fan. I prefer what I believe is known as 'post-metal' (ie. Isis, Pelican, Meshuggah, etc). I do like some Emperor, though, so y'know, it's not like I can't stand it.

I really like Negura Bunget, Agalloch, Summoning, Alcest, Emperor, and Wolves in the Throne Room. Really, I'm game for just about any symphonic or atmospheric black metal (not noise stuff like Burzum though), but rarely ever do I enjoy straight-forward black metal.

Normally I don't really enjoy BM, I'm with the symphonic/athmospheric crowd, going with dark ambient and neofolk mostly. I do love a few BM bands such as The Kovenant( industrial hybrid), Le Grand Guignol( simply amazing) and Ancient Rites( Rvbicon is great, maybe it's death metal though). Sometimes though, I get in a state when I only find comfort and stability in some random black metal, like when I feel I am surrounded by shitty people or when I think about really bad things that happenned to people( Nicholas Ridley, Balthasar Gerard, Ravaillac for instance).

Strange. The first black metal song I heard was Darkthrone's "Under A Funeral Moon", and I loved it immediately, and have been listening to black metal ever since. (I listen to other music, too)

There have been some really good bands mentioned in the thread!

About Burzum.

I don't like it. I understand why it is an influential band (guy), but I don't like the music.

Now, about Bathory: I second Knight of Liberty's reccomendation for Blood Fire Death. That is an amazing CD! Raaaaaah! I"m listening to "A Fine Day to Day" and am getting so pumped!

Nordland I is also good-for the more viking metal side of Bathory. Nordland II is alright, but not as good as the first.

Damn, I fucking love black metal!

black metal (svart metall) rocks, though I listen to a lot of other genres, metal or otherwise.
since I am Norwegian, I listen to Norwegian bands like Carpathian Forest, Immortal, Mayhem, and Dimmu Borgir (hardly BM but still, and I especially like the Norwegian parts) and many other bands. I throughly enjoy BM and other metal bands that sing in my native language or same family (Swedish, danish so forth) .
