Which Cheese is the most famous....?

Post the country where you are from, so we can see which cheese is most famous in your country.

Remember...the poll is not your opinion of which taste best..but which is MOST FAMOUS.

Any discussion about cheese is welcome, as I love it. I basically get fucked up on cheese.

Also, post your favorite cheese.

Most of our cheese come form Aussie & NZ, I think. I like mozzarella. Yesterday I made these:

The question makes me indecisive. On the one hand if you ask me who are the big names in cheese, my first thought would be Swiss. On the other, I much prefer French cheese and find Swiss rather bland. Is the question purely about the widespread awareness of cheese, or of widespread liking for?

Go Camembert!!!

In general, British though.

It's a tight one between Swiss and France I think.
Here in Germany, most people eat Gouda, Chester, Brie, Emmentaler, etc. There's so many kinds of cheese, most people probably have no clue where their favorite cheese comes from.

1. Feta (so, Greece and Bulgaria mostly)
2. Cheddar (So the UK, even if the best is from Wisconsin)
3. Swiss (even if they don't call the stuff with the holes 'swiss cheese' there)
4. French (Brie is tasty)

I know and I swear I thought about what you said when I was making this thread. *What a non-typical TAI thread* :p But, don't you worry...a friend of mine recently alerted my attention to something quite interesting...so I'm planning a thread later tonight. The problem is the articles that I was reading over are in German...so I'm trying to figure out what I can do about that for you guys.
3. Swiss (even if they don't call the stuff with the holes 'swiss cheese' there)
The stuff with the holes is called Swiss cheese. More specifically, it's Emmenthaler cheese, a Swiss cheese which is sort of the "representative" cheese. Naturally there are other "swiss cheeses" but this one is the international representative.

I love lots of sorts of cheeses, so it's rather hard to choose a favorite. Generally speaking, the stronger and sharper, the better, so blue/bleu, feta, Parmesan, extra sharp Cheddar, and the like.

As for fame, definately France. Switzerland has not garnered a name for being "cheese eating neutrality monkeys".

As a vegetarian (though not vegan) I try to eat rennet free cheeses. Generally they're crap.

I live in Oz and discovered a rennet free ripper that is as good as any regular cheese. It touts itself as elbo style. I've had to look that up (not even Wikipedia has an entry on it) and discovered that elbo is a Swiss style.

The other type of cheese I eat by the bucketload is parmesan (imitation I must admit).

So I guess the Swiss and Italians win for me.

Note: In english, that means "Health and strenght to the loins.":D

As for cheese which you eat not on bread or on pizza or in other food or something French cheese is definitely most well known here (next to Belgian cheese). There is French cheese and cheese, I don't think we talk about British/Swiss or Dutch cheese. (actually we do talk about Dutch cheese, but only to laugh) So it could be that French cheese isn't used much here, but it certainly has a reputation.
I guess Italian cheese is also used a lot, but more on pizza's or other food. I totally love feta, but Greece isn't on the list. Swiss cheese isn't that well known, we only use it to melt it on other foods. The same goes for British cheese.

I love cheese has a list, not that I agree with it.

I'd say Edam has a run for international cheese, mainly because of those little round cheese bites that are sold in a string bag - whatever they're called.

Edam, no one has mentioned Dutch overall but Gouda as well.

I do like a bit of cheddar myself but most often buy brie.
